Please call the Parish Offi ce for more information. First time parents and godparents are required to attend a Baptism Preparation Session. Only when Certifi cates of Eligibility from godparents are presented, then a date for the Baptism can be set. The Baptism Preparation Sessions are held the fi rst Sunday of the month at 12:00 PM in the Upper Church, with registration required. To register, please call the parish secretary during regular business hours (Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM). Registration must be made prior to the last Friday of the month. If no registrations are received, a session may not be held. 2 In a society where individuals were largely illiterate and unlettered due to lack of a formal education, magnificent windows of stained glass and the images contained therein imparted a knowledge and proclaimed a message such that written words not understood inherently could not. Without modern audio enhancements even words spoken and perhaps heard could only but little convey what was so concisely and beautifully revealed and illuminated with the shining of sunlight through colorful glass. Beautiful images of stained glass conveyed the Faith to countless generations. Biblical stories proclaimed by preachers came to life in the newday sun. From Creation to Desert Wandering; from Prophets and Kings to the Baptist and Forerunner of the Messiah: from Virgin Birth to bitter Passion; from Miracles and Healings to Resurrection and New Life, the whole of the biblical story was told. Mary, the Mother of God, all of the First Apostles, and so many of the Saints, have been portrayed over centuries in ornate windows in both spiraling cathedrals and the most humble of churches. This tradition continues down to our own day. Today, stained-glass windows not only tell the story of our Faith. They tell the story of the story. They speak of grand architectural achievements throughout the world: cathedrals, churches, and basilicas each unique in beauty. They speak of human endeavor and talent miraculous in and of itself. They speak to what the mind and imagination inspired by God s Grace can effect. They speak of sacrifices made both of wealth and labor. To this extent, the beauty and artistry of stained-glass windows reflect who we are as a People of Faith. They reflect who we are as God s People. Look at a stained-glass window. Look into it - and see yourself. Holy Cross Church had been dubbed the Cathedral of Delaware County at one time. Its size and beauty spoke to such a designation. Although such designation might be amicably disputed by our neighboring Church communities today, the sheer size and the beauty of Holy Cross Church cannot be. The many, large, beautiful stained-glass windows of Holy Cross Church tell a story. It is the story of Faith. It is the story of a Parish. It is my story and it is yours. It is a story that must be shared. In the name of Holy Cross Parish and its Faithful, I am most grateful to all those who contributed for recognizing the need to share the story of the story. I am grateful for their work, efforts, faith, and inspiration in composing a volume that documents the beauty and history of the magnificent stainedglass windows of Holy Cross Church. Our society today is not one that is lacking in formal education, but seems to be one in which illiteracy of Faith is rampant; thus, the need for such a book and the need for the beauty of stained-glass images and windows even yet in our own 21 st Century. May God, through the intercession of Our Lady of the Holy Cross and all the Saints, bless greatly the authors of this work and may their efforts and zeal foster much sunlit illumination within the Parish of Holy Cross and beyond! CYO News Congratulations to our JV girls volleyball team and our Varsity boys football team! They both had big accomplishments this season. Registration We will begin registration soon for the school year. Please look at our website: for the most up-to-date information. Our early childhood program starts at PK3 and we have a few different options. If you want to take a tour, we offer Walk-in Wednesdays. Just call the office, and request an appointment. Home and School Meeting Our Home and School Meeting will be held on Wednesday, November 14, at 6:30. We will have a movie night for the students and a pizza dinner for those interested. 4 FOOD PANTRY UPDATE The weather is changing quickly and it s hard to believe that Thanksgiving will be here before we know it. If you are able, we are in need of turkeys (any size) and the fixings to go with the dinner. If possible, please drop off your donation during our pantry hours (Wednesdays, from 3:30 to 6:00 PM). If you are unable to come during this time, please contact Ellie Epperson at and she will make arrangements to pick up your donation. Also, the Boy Scouts are looking for extra help for their annual food drive (which will occur November 10 - dropping off flyers and the 17 th - collecting the food). Our pantry receives a significant amount of canned goods from this drive that is critical to our mission of helping the most in need in our community. 6 THIRTY-FIRST SUNDAY Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson Every coin is double-sided. Every give comes with a take. Every choice brings a rejection. That s all part of life allowing for the rare exception. Even so, we are at our best when we strive for unity in our living and promote harmony. Coins can be engraved the same way on both sides. We can be all-giving with our donations with no take. We can love many people with only differences of degree. In our gospel scene for this weekend, we watch Jesus take up the challenge of a scribe s timeworn question about which is the greatest law. At that time, the Jewish code included no fewer than 613 laws, so this would be a problem that ordinary men could fill with whole hours of rabbinical discussion. Of course, Jesus is no ordinary man. Just as He was no ordinary twelve-year-old in a discussion with His elders in His Father s House. So Jesus comes at the question with a human and divine perspective. He is not in any way hidebound by inflexible tradition. What does He do for the searching scribe? He combines love of God with love of neighbor. All well and good as an ideal, some of us might respond all these centuries later. But almost all of us immediately see a conundrum. Loving God is usually rather easy, especially when all is right in our little worlds. But if one figurative curve ball is thrown our way: when life takes an unexpected turn that we do not welcome, then we have a problem with God. The relationship cools, or winds down to practically nothing. We have to struggle to get it back. The clerical abuse scandal is a good example of such a curve ball thrown our way. I believe, behind the human wrong-doers, stands the devil. What a clever strategy the prince of darkness has chosen to attack the Church he hates! Combine sex, which gets most people s immediate attention, and celibate clergy involvement, when most people don t understand celibacy or mock it as an impossibility. Make the victims vulnerable children and adolescents. Add to the mix bishops and priests, who are supposed to represent Christ, and then have many of the bishops involved in a cover-up, supposedly for the sake of saving face for the Church. Truly diabolical. It takes great faith to believe that those hell gates will not prevail. They certainly do in the headlines. It is a tribute to our many faithful lay Catholics, that despite their anger, pain and shame, including that of all the good priests and bishops, they have stayed with Christ and His Church despite the criminal and sinful behavior of some vow-taking clerics. Meanwhile, when it comes to love of neighbor, the matter becomes challenging in ways quite ordinary. We rightly ask, Am I really ready to love him or her as much as I love myself? Even that guy who runs the leaf vacuum at 6:30 on a Saturday morning, my only day to sleep late? Or the neighbor who blasts his stereo? Or the person with a verbal tic that has him/her say y know after most sentences? Or the annoying tailgaters who prowl the roads? On a much broader scale, what about those politicians we can t stand? Or the terrorists and the school shooters whose actions defy easy understanding? No matter who our neighbor is, we must make that decision of the will that we call love and apply it to the point where we can resist an ugly hatred from forming in our hearts. So much else I could say about this second half of the great commandment. Instead, I ll let the great poet Carl Sandburg speak for me. He once said Love your neighbor as yourself, but don t take down the fence.
