4 FROM THE PASTOR'S DESK Dorothy Day ministered in the slums of New York to people suffering from addictions, mental illnesses, homelessness and despair. She tried to see Christ in each person, but often He wore Ita distressing disguise." Why don't the disciples in today's Gospel recognize Jesus on the road to Emmaus? Their eyes were not open until later during the breaking of the bread. We can be like them. Christ in the Eucharist? Yes. Christ in other places? That's tougher because often He wears a disguise that is not attractive. It can be especially so on today's highways. The disciples missed Jesus on the road. We can be equally blind today: the tail-gaiter; the speeder; the driver who cuts us off. Instead of responding with anger, let us respond with love and forbearance. I know: easy to say, hard to do. Let us ask Our Lord to give us eyes to recognize Him, even when He's in a distressing disguise. Sincere thanks to all our Ministers of Care and volunteers who delivered the parish Easter Greetings and plant to our Homebound and sick. Special thanks to our Active Seniors Club for their donation toward the plants. We appreciate the time and generosity of our parents, teachers, and sixth grade class that visited and brought the parish greetings to the Nursing Homes. God bless you for your thoughtfulness and generosity. Our Parish Carnival will be held June 10 - June 14. Discounted Advance Tickets are now available (20 tickets for $25). Contact the Business Office at Tickets will be sold after all the weekend Masses starting Saturday evening May 24, and continuing through June 8. He 0243

6 GOODNEWS The story of the road to "'::~.~w Emmaus is a favorite In 21,19 among retreat leaders because they canpair off participants to talk about hopes, fears, and dreams while they take a lont.walk orfind a safe place to sit. I've heard people tell dark secrets and expose long-hidden resentments on such walks. It seems the act of walking loosens the tongue and allows us to look at scenery while we bring forth the courage to tell what is happening in our lives. So it doesn't surprise me at all that Jesus makes His first post-resurrection appearance in Luke to two people who are walking and talking. Believing Him to be a stranger, the disciples are free to tell everything about their fear, their anger, their dashed hopes, and their confusion over the empty tomb. They are able to be themselves, and Jesus does what they need Him to do-he listens and hears them. Then something remarkable happens. He opens their minds and hearts to the revelation of God in Scripture. He gives them a new way of seeing. They are eager to know more. They beghim to stay and share a meal. And.finally, they know Him in the breaking of the bread and the breaking open of their hearts. Maybe there's a lesson here for us. When we're weary or worried, perhaps we can take a walk on our imaginary road and tell Jesus everything that has happened, let Him love us, and let Him help us remember the Scriptures. And, hearts lightened, we can know Him again in the breaking of the bread.
