Only when Certificates of Eligibility from godparents are presented, then a date for the baptism can be set. The Baptism Preparation Sessions are held the first Sunday of the month at 12:30 PM in the Upper Church, with registration required. 5 FROM THE PASTOR~S DESK In the middle of my second year up at Penn State, my friend, Charlie Polenko from Hazleton, suggested that we attend daily Mass a couple of times a week. I replied: "Why? Isn't every Sunday and Holyday good enough?" He said that it would be good for us. So we did, and a few months later, I decided to become a priest. A simple suggestion by a friend led to a complete change of life that was according to God's will. his brother, In today's Gospel, St. John the Baptist points to Our Lord and two of John's disciples followed Jesus. Andrew told Simon Peter, about Jesus and Peter became a disciple. It's amazing to see sometimes the effect and results a simple suggestion or instruction to a family member, friend or acquaintance has; especially, in the area of sharing our faith and the truth of the Gospel and the Church. We Catholics, though, don't seem to do that too often or too well. Belief in Jesus and His Church are necessary to get to heaven. You would think that out of love and concern we would want to try to persuade others to take Our Lord and His Church seriously. If someone we know is very ill, we ask about it, send cards, visit, encourage the person, promise prayers. But if someone we know is spiritually ill, we don't say a word. Perhaps, we don't want to appear judgmental of others or holier than thou or rock any boats or be politically incorrect. Perhaps, we're afraid we won't have all the answers, or should mind our own business. But John the Baptist and Andrew in the Gospel did not worry about that stuff. They were excited about Jesus and wanted to share their faith. How excited are we about Jesus and our Catholic faith? truth and the comfort and strength of the Bible and sacraments. 6 THE RESPECT LIFE COMMITTEE FOCUSES ON THE GIRL SCOUTS OF AMERICA Recently, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops published a report stating numerous concerns about the Girl Scouts of America. The Girl Scouts of America admit that "they have no authority to prohibit local councils from forming relationships with Planned Parenthood." Planned Parenthood has publicly stated that "they are so happy to have a partnership with the ~qirl Scouts of America because never do they have access to so many girls as through the organization." They also have a sexuality position of "increasing access for young people to information on STOs and protection methods (e.g. condoms)." Additionally, they include various references to topics related to "sexual and reproductive health/rights" and that this phrase often includes abortion, according to the USCCB report. Furthermore the Girl Scouts of America contributes over one million unrestricted dollars to support these causes. Please prayerfully consider not supporting this organization during Girl Scout Cookie time. For parents, there are Pro- Life alternatives to the Girl Scouts of America, including the American Heritage Girls ( and Little Flowers ( Both of these Pro- Life organizations have girls earning "patches" or "badges." In providing humanitarian aid, resettling displaced individuals and families, and advocating on behalf of victims of atrocities such as human trafficking, the organizations supported by the CRSCollection act from their belief that every individual is an equal heir of Christ's love and care. The annual Catholic Relief Services Collection challenges American Catholics to put their faith into action and to see "Jesus is disguise" in the faces of the poor, and to support ongoing efforts to respond to their needs. The funds collected support vital Catholic programs that share in the Catholic mission of promoting the sacredness of human life. A small amount from the collection is retained by the Archdiocese to help cover local efforts to promote the collection. The collection will be taken up in the parishes of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia the weekend of January 24 and 25, The American Catholic community and the Archdiocese of Philadelphia in particular, have always responded very generously in this annual collection.
