Please call the rectory at to set up an appointment with a Priest. First time parents and godparents are required to attend a Baptism Preparation Session. Only when Certifi cates of Eligibility from godparents are presented, then a date for the baptism can be set. The Baptism Preparation Sessions are held the fi rst Sunday of the month at 12:00 PM in the Upper Church, with registration required. To register, please call the parish secretary during regular business hours (Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM). Registration must be made prior to the last Friday of the month. If no registrations are received, a session may not be held. 2 One would expect to find a very big cross in a very big sanctuary in a very big church named for the Holy Cross. Well, at least, that s what I expected the first time that I set foot in our church. I guess two out of three ain t bad! I was, quite frankly, a little disappointed - and surprised. Now, within the beautiful stained glass scene behind the large sanctuary, there are, in fact, three crosses. If you look closely, in the background, off in the distance, there are three teeny, tiny crosses representing Calvary Hill. The sun is rising behind them. It s the morning of the Resurrection. Gosh, even the crucifix above the tabernacle is relatively small for such a large church. I ve seen larger crosses in chapels. I ve seen larger crosses in people s living rooms! The Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross on September 14 (our parish Feast Day) had me thinking about this lack of large in a church that otherwise seems to be about big. I actually had thoughts of attempting to track down a super-size cross for our super-size church and acquire it, of course, by seeking a super-size donation! I imagined it suspended magnificently from the ceiling directly above the sanctuary and proclaiming boldly and big to all who might enter: WE ARE HOLY CROSS, BABY! DEAL WITH IT! However, on second thought, maybe a tiny cross depicted points to a larger and greater reality. The stained glass scene has tiny crosses in the background; it is the Resurrection scene that is front and center! Jesus is greater than the Cross. He s larger than it. One might say that in His Incarnation, He had to be conceived by the Holy Spirit in order to fit upon it. The Cross didn t transform Jesus. Jesus transformed the Cross. An instrument of death becomes an instrument of Life and its Key. The various crosses that we experience in life are certainly not pleasant - and, at times, they can seem overwhelmingly large. But, it all depends upon perspective - the perspective of Faith. It s not that the Cross is insignificant or unimportant, but it is small compared to Resurrection. Keys to castles are small; even more so the Key to the Kingdom the Key that we know as the Cross. WE ARE HOLY CROSS, BABY! And what we proclaim loudly and boldly and big is not the suffering a cross entails, but the largeness of that Life and Kingdom that lay beyond it! Peace! Fr. The group meets at Holy Cross Parish Center for 1½ hours each week (Tuesdays) for six weeks beginning September 25. All the money raised by St. Mary Polish American Society will assist with the maintenance and upkeep costs for St. Mary s Church as it begins its new life as an apostolate for the Fraternity of St. Peter. Welcome Back to our family and friends at Holy Cross School! We began our year with almost 250 students. Close to 100 of them are Pre-K through Kindergarten age. It is very exciting and very busy! We started the year with some trying changes - we switched to Verizon Fios to help our students have quicker Internet access - it was a process throughout the summer, but I think we will benefit in the long run. We also changed our carline procedure to try to make it more efficient and safer for all. It is a work in progress and I thank our Nield Road neighbors for their patience as we get this routine down. We are trying to keep most of the traffic on our school property. We celebrated our first school liturgy with Father Wilson on Wednesday, and we look forward to easing into our new year in much cooler temperatures than the first days! Our Back to School Night for our grade 4-8 students will be held on Thursday, September 20. We will gather at 6:30 in the Parish Hall and move to your child s classrooms to meet the teachers. We will hold our Back to School BBQ on Sunday, September 30, from 12 Noon to 3:00 PM. We hope to see many families join us for this fun day. As always, we appreciate all of the support we receive from our parents and parish organizations. A big thank you to our Knights of Columbus Council who continually gives back to our school. 6 TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson Old movies can make for good fun to watch when we opt to view them on the homescreen, armed with our favorite popcorn. This is especially true when we choose one deemed classic. We forgive the black and white cinematography, and maybe even the stilted acting, especially if the story seems plausible. Case in point: the 1950 award winning film Sunset Boulevard. Gloria Swanson plays Norma Desmond, a long-faded and mentally unstable movie queen, long forgotten by the world and living in her outdated mansion. Into her life comes an unsuccessful screen writer named Joe, played by a handsome but cynical William Holden. The sadness of the tale comes from the fallen idol s failed quest to regain her long-lost popularity. Eventually descending into insanity, she murders Joe. The whole story is a poignant reminder of the futility of having only hollow goals in life, such as remaining young and popular. Conversely, we come upon Christ our Lord in this weekend s Gospel passage, as a person who is completely unconcerned with popularity and a favorable public opinion of Himself. If He were to come among us in person now, I doubt that He would ever be attracted to one of those so-called mega churches we have in our land. With their bowling alleys and eateries, and stadium seating in plush chairs, there is no visible crucifix. Such soft cushioned Christianity would repel Him. Why? Because He demands that His true disciples take up their crosses daily. Notice how innocent St. Peter gets the harsh rebuke of being called satan by Our Lord because he wanted to take suffering out of the Lord s life (and ours). A natural impulse. But not a supernatural response to Christ. Although there is much joy in being Christian, there is nothing soft about it, at least here on earth. We know that professional athletes deny themselves physical comforts for better performance. Our military and entertainers sacrifice time with family and loved ones as part of their duty. Many ordinary people follow a demanding regimen of diet and exercise to maintain good health. What Jesus asks of us is different. We know He led the way. He obeyed His heavenly Father despite the cost. He did it for love of Him and also of us. There is our motivation to return the favor. We have all been driving down a highway and noticed bright orange signs that state Begin Construction and. End Construction I ve kidded with people that they read like a command to us as we drive by. One thing for sure is that these signs tend to remain around long after construction work is over. Now suppose that you were to announce that--for--the time being-god s construction in your life was going to be halted. Surely we would not like any of our friends to say: I didn t know any construction was going on! HC 024 5
