2 Now that the Holiday Season is in full swing, what are you hoping that Santa might bring? For many, it will be the latest smart phone, tablet, or gaming system. The make-life-easier notion that modern technology was supposed to bring eludes us. The dog is chasing its tail. Life, itself, has become more complex and complicated; ever changing and challenged, and rushed beyond belief. In the midst of all this, some temporary soothing of heartache and longing is experienced in the high tech audio-visual gadgetry of today. We seek comfort in our high-tech toys, but such experiences are fleeting and so one seeks the next audio-visual high in HD with surround sound. Oh Lord, our hearts are truly restless until they rest in Thee! The 21 st Century is one of electronic media and our world is conditioned by it. Digital images speed across the Internet and around the world at the speed of light. But, the world need not make itself less human in the midst of this. Audio-visual and emotional charge cannot replace authentic communication. Rational understanding and clarity of ideas-cognitive thinking - is as attainable in this century as it has been in the past. Human beings respond to a challenge whether that challenge is one of developing the latest technology with the fastest download times or whether that challenge is in the realm of ideas and rational understanding. Without so much as a cell phone, Christ communicated Himself globally, universally, and transcendentally. Christ the Mediator communicated Himself perfectly on every level. It all began not with an imposition, but a very simple proposition. It continues today with the same proposition. I am the way, the truth, and the life. Come, follow me! Christmas is coming. Wilson 2018 DAY OF SANCTIFICATION FOR PRIESTS The priests of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia assemble each year for a day of prayer and reflection on the Sacred Priesthood. This year our priests will gather with Archbishop Chaput at Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary on Monday, December 3, for the 2018 Day of Sanctification for Priests. Please pray for all priests of the Archdiocese, especially that weekend and Monday, with the following prayer from the Roman Missal: Lo rd our God, Who in governing your people make use of the ministry of Priests, grant to these men a persevering obedience to your will, so that by their ministry and life they may gain glory for you in Christ, Who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

4 ST. CHARLES BORROMEO SEMINARY APPEAL A COMMUNITY OF FAITH BAND OF BROTHERS THEY SHOULD BE A CAUSE OF PRIDE IN ALL OF US. There are fifteen of them. Young men between 25 and 35 all scheduled to be ordained in May of While six are preparing to serve the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, nine have been sent to our Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary by dioceses and religious orders from across the country. Many of them heard the call in high school. Others went to college first. One was called away from a career on Wall Street. Still another is a military veteran of Afghanistan. Marco Casanova and Alessandro Giardini are two of these young men. According to them, members of this particular class pride themselves on their remarkable chemistry, despite their different backgrounds. They are a close-knit band of brothers who share an easy openness among themselves to talk about their faith. They all share the goal, not only of becoming priests, but of becoming saints. And they speak of that goal without self-consciousness or false piety. Men who desire to be saints! To hear it said out loud so matter-of-factly is a little shocking. But on further reflection, of course, they aspire to sainthood. So should every priest, and every person. This class is probably not all that different from the thousands of men who have been ordained from St. Charles before them, or from the many who will come after them. Yet they will be unique. With God s continued grace, they will be ordained at a particular time and place next year as part of the 2,000+ year history of the Church. They will be well equipped to serve our community in way and word, desiring sainthood for all those to whom they will minister. They should be a cause for pride in all of us. The spirit these men hope to bring to their ministry was perfectly expressed by Pope Francis at a recent ordination: Always have before your eyes the example of the Good Shepherd, Who didn t come to be served, but to serve. That we have such young men answering the call of Jesus Christ should give each of us ample reason to be proud and optimistic about the future of the Church. That we have a wonderful seminary to be here to form and educate the priests who will serve and lead tomorrow s Church should make us humble and grateful. That is why it is essential for each of us to support them as generously as we can. Tomorrow s priests depend on us. As we did last year, we are also going to be selling 22"/24" Door Wreaths w/bow as well. Wreaths are $23 each. BOYS VARSITY FOOTBALL CHAMPIONS Congratulations to our 7 th and 8 th grade boys football team. They defeated St. Mary Magdalen in the Parade of Champions on Saturday night at LaSalle College High School. Congratulations to the kids, the parents, and the coaches for a wonderful season! Also to our 8 th grade girls for helping to make the final pep rally for the Champions such a success! CLASS SHOUT OUT! This month s shout out goes to our 2 nd graders as they take the next step in their Religious journey. Good luck as they receive their First Penance this weekend. 6 FEAST OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST THE KING Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson Last spring, millions of Americans watched a wedding on TV. Certainly not one at their local parish, but decidedly one not to be missed. On that bright day, at St. George s Chapel at Windsor Castle, Prince Harry of England married Meghan Markle of the United States. Immediately the groom became a husband, and a little later the bride became a duchess. All of this celebrated with the trademark British pomp and ceremony. Isn t it ironic that we citizens of what the British once called a colony, and whose ancestors fought the same British to be independent, should even to this day be fascinated by the royals? We Americans would never want a king living in our White House. We would strenuously resist any occupant of said house who would dare to act the monarch. That said, we should have no problem with a royal title given to Christ our Lord because He is certainly a king of a different order. He wants only to rule our hearts and minds, which is His right as being the Creator Who brought us into existence from nothing out of love. The dramatic scene from John s gospel finds a battered and bruised Jesus standing resolutely before a puzzled Pilate who is caught between his better self and a frenzied faction of truth haters. With no crown but a hideous circle of thorns on His sacred brow, Jesus tells the governor the truth that He is indeed a king. But one whose kingdom is not here. Jesus eyes are sunk in dark circles, tired from lack of sleep, hunger and abuse of all kinds. Yet His voice is strong as He answers. John has done a fine job of letting us realize that it is Pilate who is really on trial. Little does the poor pagan know that in due time their roles will be reversed. For you and me, this King Jesus is many realities. Omnipotence is a major one, except for one small item that He has left under our puny power and control. It is our hearts. There He can rule only if we let Him. Imagine now if, by some twist of time, we were allowed to stand next to Pilate that day. Not knowing what we do now, but only what we saw and heard by having followed Jesus these last three years, we too would be facing a tough decision. Would we speak up in His defense? Would we let it be known by all that we believe in Him? An interesting question, especially when a few days ago we gathered around festive food tables to thank Him officially as a nation and privately as believers for all that we have received. Come to think of it, our Church, which we still love despite its faults and weaknesses, does ask us to stand up for Jesus. Not literally of course, unless that too is asked of us. When we do, we are acknowledging that He is the Way, the Truth and the Life. You know, whenever we do that, somehow or other we too become quite royal.
