Please call the rectory at to set up an appointment with a Priest. First time parents and godparents are required to attend a Baptism Preparation Session. Only when Certifi cates of Eligibility from godparents are presented, then a date for the baptism can be set. The Baptism Preparation Sessions are held the fi rst Sunday of the month at 12:00 PM in the Upper Church, with registration required. To register, please call the parish secretary during regular business hours (Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM). Registration must be made prior to the last Friday of the month. If no registrations are received, a session may not be held. 2 PASTOR S CORNER Good News! We will have an exciting Lenten Series this year: Bishop Robert Barron s enlightening study on sin and virtue. By DVD and discussion, we will be taking a look at what Catholic tradition calls the Seven Deadly Sins and contrasting them with what Bishop Barron refers to as the Seven Lively Virtues. The aim of this six-week course is to increase understanding, promote reflection and encourage practical action to assess and enhance our life as a disciple of Jesus Christ. This course will take place at 7:00 PM in the parish center (behind the school) on the Thursdays of Lent, beginning February 15. See you there! The next drop-off is Wednesday, January 24 between 6:00 and 7:00 PM at the parish hall annex. Anyone wishing to join us can go to saintjohnshospice.org for recipes. 4 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK In the popular Broadway musical Damn Yankees, the protagonist, Joe Hardy, asks to be transformed into a young man. Then he could play baseball once again for his beloved Washington Senators. The devil transforms Joe, giving him a young man s body. But fortunately, Joe is never transformed on the inside. He manages to elude his pact with the devil and return to life. At times, we, too, may want to be transformed on the outside. We may want to be thinner or taller, have less wrinkles, more hair, whiter teeth and more energy. However, our readingstodaytell usthatwereallyneed to be transformed on the INSIDE. We must move away from evil ways that damage our relationship with Jesus and His Church. We need to hear Jonah s call for repentance and Our Lord s plea to reform and believe in the Gospel. One way that helps me respond to Our Lord is A.A. Not Alcoholics Anonymous the excellent organization that helps people with drinking problems. A.A. stands for Attitude Adjustment. I believe that as we think, that is how we act and even how we feel. The way we perceive ourselves and Our Lord, the way we understand our sins and strengths, the people and events in our lives - our actions and feelings will flow from that. For example, toward someone we perceive as a pain in the neck: if we think kindly about him, make excuses for his behavior, realize that he not going to change, anticipate our response to him - we can hopefully then be more forgiving and patient. We cannot let our feelings or emotions determine our behavior. Feelings are important and they need to be acknowledged and understood and expressed subject to right thinking. But they should not call the shots. Our right thinking formed by faith should lead the way to a responsible and loving lifestyle. Catholic Schools Week January 29 - February 2 Our annual Catholic School s Week festivities will take place during this time frame. Grandparent or Special Person s Day Thursday, February 1 from 9:00-11:30 AM will be our Grandparent/Special Person s Day. Last year was an overwhelming success! Our book fair will be open and we will rotate the groups between activities. An invitation will be sent home. We would really like everyone to preregister ahead of time for planning and safety. 6 GODPARENTS / SPONSORS A godparent (or sponsor - same thing!) For Baptism is a person who helps an adult being baptized through the process of Christian Initiation into the Church. A sponsor for Confirmation is to take care that the person confirmed behaves as a true witness of Christ and faithfully fulfills the duties of Confirmation. A godparent or sponsor of infant Baptism helps the parents present the child for Baptism and helps the growing child live a faithful Catholic Christian life. Godparents are not potential foster parents in case the real parents die. They should not be selected simply because they are close relatives, friends, or good people, nor should they be chosen to guarantee that the child be remembered with nice gifts on birthdays and special occasions. Godparents sponsor the child into the Church and therefore need to be fully practicing Catholics who will represent the Church well and will give good, faithful, Catholic example. One sponsor or godparent for Baptism, male or femal, is sufficient. There may, of course, be two, one of each sex. To be a godparent or sponsor (for Baptism or Confirmation) a person: 1. Must be at least 16 years old. 2. Must have received all the Sacrament of Initiation: Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. 3. Must live a life of faith: attend Mass every Sunday and Holy Days; receive the sacraments frequently; not co-habitate; if married, the ceremony must have been witnessed by a Catholic priest or with special exception, approved by the Archbishop. 4. Must not be the father or mother of the person to be confirmed. A baptized person who belongs to a non-catholic Christian denomination may be admitted only in company with a Catholic sponsor, and then simply as a witness to the Baptism. This person is a Christian Witness, not a godparent or sponsor. The Christian Witness cannot be a former Catholic or nonpracticing Catholic. It is desirable that the sponsor chosen for Confirmation be one of the godparents from the child s Baptism HC 024 5
