Please call the rectory at to set up an appointment with a Priest. First time parents and godparents are required to attend a Baptism Preparation Session. Only when Certificates of Eligibility from godparents are presented, then a date for the baptism can be set. The Baptism Preparation Sessions are held the first Sunday of the month at 12:30 PM in the Upper Church, with registration required. To register, please call the parish secretary during regular business hours (Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM). Registration must be made prior to the last Friday of the month. If no registrations are received, a session may not be held. 2 PASTOR.lS CORNER We congratulate and welcome our new adult altar servers. They will begin serving soon at Funeral Masses, weekday Masses and Sunday Masses. We are grateful to the following who have volunteered for this special ministry: Dave Dziena, Joe Smith, Fran D'Alonzo, Ronnie Sidebottom, Rino Desiderio, Jonathan Menta, Michele Walton, and Mike O'Shea. We are in real need of more Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion to help distribute Holy Communion at the weekend Masses. You would be scheduled once every three weeks or so. If you are interested in this important parish ministry, please contact me. To honor the memory of a loved one, friend or parishioner, a donation of $150 can be made for sanctuary flowers on the altar and in front of the Blessed Mother' statue. A remembrance will be printed in the bulletin for the donation. If interested, please call the business office at I am happy to report that the profit from our Parish Carnival was $30,268 - almost $7,000 more than last year. Thank you very much for your generous support of this important and enjoyable event. We are very grateful as well to all the hard-working volunteers. If anyone is living in a marriage that has not been recognized by the Catholic Church, it would be wise to consult with a priest to see whether that situation might be rectified. It could be as simple as repeating your marriage vows quietly in front of a priest and receiving the Church's blessing. In that way, one would become eligible to receive the sacraments of the Church, especially Confession and Holy Communion. 4 FROM THE PASTOR1S DESK As I have mentioned a few times in homilies before, when I was growing up, the Gabin family would always vacation in my mother's small hometown in the Allegheny mountains of western Pennsylvania. I went on many walks with my father through walking stick. the woods, and he always liked to have a His favorite was a maple "thumb" walking stick. A "thumb" stick has a branching at the top for your thumb to hook onto. A walker's hand feels very secure holding that top, and my father walked more confidently with that stick. Once in a while we'd see a hiker with a stick that had a bell attached bears. Not every encounter on the trail is a welcome one. to it to ward off In today's Gospel, the Twelve Apostles are sent out and told to take nothing for the journey but a staff or walking stick. Yet the security of the apostles came not from the stick, but from God, Who promised to uphold them no matter what. If they met danger or rejection, the Twelve were to shake off the dust from the place and continue. Our Lord always upholds us despite the dangers and rejections of life. How we need to lean on Him constantly, but especially in times of trouble. Then we won't get discouraged when trouble comes. Rather, we will shake the dust from our problems and continue on. 5 Q. What is the proper way to receive Communion? A. PART 1. The internal requisites are the most important. Next week I will answer the question about the external gestures. We should first of all: 1) Be in the state of grace; 2) Fast for one hour before the time of actually receiving Communion (For the sick, fasting for 15 minutes is recommended if possible; no fast, ITnot possible). 3) Receive with devotion and intention. In regard to being in the state of grace, St. Paul notes in his letter to Corinth, reception after examining oneself is a prerequisite for worthy reception. Venial sins do not destroy the state of grace in us. Mortal sins do. Those with mortal sins must go to confession first before receiving. There must be grave reason to receive Communion if you have not gone to confession to confess your mortal sins. Many, for whatever reason, refrain from Confession for long periods. If that were the case, making an act of contrition before receiving Communion would seem to be a simple way of again avoiding confession. It is also sadly a way of depriving yourself of the special graces that come only with the sacrament. In hearing confessions, most that make the act of contrition before communion wait long periods before confessing.the sin that would have held them back from Communion. There is also the requisite of getting to the sacrament of confession AS SOON AS POSSIBLE AFTER RECEIVING. Many, therefore, who say the act of contrition before Communion are abusing this practice. In regard to the fast, we should eat nothing and drink nothing except water for one hour before the time of receiving Communion. Medicines may be taken at any time before Communion. Those advanced in age or who suffer from any infirmity, as well as those who take care of them, can receive Communion even if they have taken something during that previous hour. Chewing gum and breath mints should if possible be avoided. Cough drops for the throat are permissible. In regard to receiving with devotion and attention, the first thing to be noted is that belief in the Real Presence must be present in the heart and mind of one receiving or risk sacrilege. Our human emotions, of course, could never react adequately to this mystery, but if we want to receive with devotion, we will make every effort to concentrate on the great privilege of receiving the Body and Blood of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Our hearts, minds, and attention should not be wandering all over the place. If we are chatting with our neighbor, assuming a casual posture or not paying attention to the gestures used in receiving communion, then we are not receiving with devotion. 6 _._ -_._ FOOD PANTRY UPDATE As the heat rises, so does the number of folks in need of food in our community. Thanks to your generosity, we were able to provide our clients with a few extras to help celebrate the 4thof July, including hot dogs, rolls and baked beans. To respond to the question, "What do you need the most at the pantry?" We are in need of veggies, soup, pasta and sauce, canned meat and tuna, cereal, peanut butter and jelly, canned fruit, toilet paper and paper towels. If you know anyone in need in Delaware County, please let them know that we are open on Wednesdays from 3:30 to 6:00 PM. Please know that you are appreciated and that you are making a difference in the lives of our most in need.
