2 :J p'uuj tftat (j&l' ~ gjtau and peace will fillljo-wi ~ in FROM THE PASTOR'S DESK! One price of living in the nearby suburbs of a large city, as we do here, is not being able to see much of the night sky. A friend of my brother's in Los Angeles never saw the apparent motion of the stars in the night sky until she attended a rural college. Not much seems to have changed in the past 2000 years. Apparently, few inhabitants of Jerusalem noticed the Christmas star until the wise men arrived asking questions about the newborn king. Then and now, we can be too easily distracted by the noise and the bustle of our daily concerns. Yet, through the changing seasons and night skies, Our Heavenly Father is reminding us that nothing in this world truly remains the same. Each moment is a precious gift from the Lord to use for His glory, for our growth in holiness and for the good of others. On the other hand, that moment can simply be wasted and lost. One thing I've noticed about us Catholics is that we are hesitant to share the light of our faith with others. Fundamentalists and born again Christians share their faith, or evangelize, all the time, but not we Catholics. We have the light, the fullness of the light, but we don't have the heat! And yet, the more we love God, the more we'll want to share His truth and love, not only by works of charity, but by speaking and kindly explaining our relationship with Jesus and the truth of our faith to others. St. Francis de Sales said that when we love God, then we will talk about Him! Let us rejoice that Our Lord is with us! Let us ask Him to guide us with His holy light and lead us to reflect His light in our contacts with others. HC 0241

5 } a fjatnillf ot fj~~ EpiplUuuj - JatuuvuJ 5, 2014 Prayer: Father, lead us to your glory in heaven by the light of faith. Many ancient stories are associated with Epiphany. Beginning in the third century in the churches of the Near East, Epiphany was celebrated as the feast of Jesus' birth. Very soon after that, Jesus' baptism also began to be celebrated on His birthday, and Epiphany became an important day for baptisms. For some, the waters of baptism recalled Jesus' first miracle at the Cana wedding feast, when He turned water into wine, so this day is also associated with wedding imagery. Later on, but still a very long time ago, all the churches in the East and West agreed that Jesus' birthday would be celebrated on December 25. But in the East, the coming of the magi was also celebrated on that day, while in the West the feast was celebrated on January 6. Activity: Today, celebrate a house blessing. Sing afavorite Christmas carol together. MARCH FOR LIFE You are invited to the annual March for Life in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, January 22. It is necessary that we stand up for the sacredness of all human life and this is a wonderful way to do it. In Washington, we will visit first the National American History Museum and the National Natural History Museum. Then we will join the March and walk to the Capitol and Supreme Court Buildings where we will greet Archbishop Chaput. Our parish bus will leave the church parking lot at 7:30 AM and return by 8:30 PM. The cost is $10; payment will reserve your seat. Put your payment into an envelope marked "March for Life" with your name, address and telephone number printed on it and drop it off at the Business Office, the Rectory or in the collection basket. 6 THE MYSTERY OF THE MAGI: WHO WERE THEY? The Gospel of Matthew contains the only New Testament reference to these mysterious visitors from the East. Matthew does not refer to them as kings but as magi, astrologers, or wise men, depending on which translation of the Bible we read. The magi were a community of Persian holy men who studied the stars. They were very respected in their day, considered to be wise because they foretold the future and people's destinies; both chapter 60 ofthe prophet Isaiah and Psalm 72, long associated with this day, refer to kings worshiping God's Son, and that may be why we think of the magi as kings. HOW MANY WERE THERE? The truth is, we don't know. The churches centered around Constantinople (modem-day Istanbul, Turkey) said there were twelve, probably, to symbolize the twelve apostles or twelve tribes ofisrael. Roman tradition said there were three, most likely because Matthew mentions three gifts that the magi brought. Each of the gifts has a symbolic meaning: gold represents Christ's kingship; frankincense (incense) is a sign of priestliness; and myrrh (an embalming perfume) is a reminder of death. WHERE DID THEY COME FROM? Matthew's Gospel only identifies the magi as corning from "the East." The great explorer Marco Polo claimed to have seen the graves of the magi in what is now Tehran, Iran. According to Matthew, the magi went first to Jerusalem to ask King Herod where they could find Jesus, the "king of the Jews." This inquiry frightened Herod because, like powerful leaders from all times and places, he didn't want any rivals to his authority. Herod sent the magi to Bethlehem to fmd Jesus and report back to him Jesus' exact whereabouts. The magi, being wise, found Jesus, but after listening to God in their dreams, slipped back to their own country without speaking to Herod again. WHAT HAPPENED TO THEM? As we already noted, March Polo claimed to have found their graves in the 1270's. St. Helena, the mother of Emperor Constantine the Great, brought remains said to be theirs to Constantinople in the fourth century. Today those relics are thought to be in a cathedral in Cologne, Germany. Ifyou ever visit there, you can see the shrine. It is said that St. Thomas the Apostle encountered the magi on his way to India and baptized them. Tradition says that they all became bishops, and at the end of their lives they each saw the Star of Bethlehem again and were reunited. HC0245
