2 From the Pastor s Pen... Turn the calendar page and a whole new year opens up before you. There are a lot of blank boxes, one for each day of the year. How will you fill in the boxes of your life? When Adam and Eve were given life in the Garden of Eden, every possibility was before them. Their only task, to take care of the garden and to enjoy its produce. They were tempted by the old evil foe to ignore God s word and try to manipulate every advantage for themselves. Look where it got them expelled from the Garden; sweating out a living; feeling the pain of childbirth, yet desiring children. At that point, the Lord left them with a word of hope. The seed of the woman will destroy the head of the serpent. The promised child will destroy the source of evil the devil himself. So, we are born outside the garden, children of Adam and Eve, still sweating to make a living; still desiring children in spite of the pain; still tempted to ignore the Lord and live life by our own desires and wishes and standards. The big difference for us is that the seed of the woman (Jesus, born of Mary) has destroyed the source of evil and the power of the devil. Our hope is to trust Jesus more than ourselves, to trust God s Word more than our desires, to trust the Spirit s power more than our own, or to ignore the false hopes of a powerless devil. Then, how will you fill in the blank-box-days in front of you this year? First, maybe a daily reading of God s Word will keep your focus on the real source of life and power Jesus. Second, maybe a renewed effort at prayer, daily prayer, heartfelt prayer, thanksgiving prayer, will keep your focus away from your own desires and point to God s good promise for others. Third, plan each day to do some act of good, of giving, of helping, of kindness for someone else, maybe a friend, maybe a stranger. Fourth, wrap up each day with a prayer for forgiveness where you have acted more like Adam and Eve than like Jesus Christ. And trust that God s promise of forgiveness will give you a clean slate, another empty day-box. God bless us all as we move on our way to the great New Year when Jesus comes again. Pastor Paul Nelson 1

3 Concordia s Call Committee has taken another important step forward on our journey towards welcoming our next Senior Pastor into fellowship. We completed the Congregational Profile and submitted it along with four Pastors nominated by members of this Church. The names of these four Pastors are: 1. Rev. Keith Beasley of Good Shepherd in Roanoke, VA 2. Rev. Paul Hass of Bella Vista in Bella Vista, AR 3. Rev. Mark Raddatz of Emmanuel in Lancaster, OH 4. Rev. Brian Weaver of Gloria Dei in Houston, TX The next actions will be taken by the SE District President, Rev. Denninger where he s expected to review our Profile and list of nominated Pastors. He will then engage his internal advisors to begin formulating a list of Pastors he feels would be suitable for leading Concordia. As to our nominated Pastors, he may include or exclude them from the list we receive back based on information he has. We ll be meeting in the coming weeks/months to formulate our interview process, including questions and procedures. Once President Denninger completes the Call List of Pastors for us to consider, we will receive that list and begin the process of identifying those most closely matching the Congregational Profile. These Pastors will then be selected for interview by our Committee. When we identify a candidate(s) we decide is a best fit for our Church, a Congregational Call Meeting will be held for the voters to review these selections 2

4 and vote to support the 1 st, 2 nd or 3 rd choices (if available) of the Call Committee and then formally extend the Call to that Pastor. Once that Call is accepted, we ll joyfully arrange for his Installation and then the work of this Committee is complete. As you can see, a lot of work remains with several significant steps to go, so an exact timeline is not possible to present. The T/CAC did a tremendous amount of work before our Committee began, and now I m very pleased to be part of this group working hard under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Please feel free to see me or any member of the Committee if you have questions or feedback for the process. Committee members are: Lori Bedder, Steve Bost, Delaina Bryan, Miriam Davis, Kyle Hayman, Rick Miller, Cindy Sigmon, Susan Allison (Secretary), David Hartsoe (Vice Chair), and Carl Roth (Chair). Please pray for the Committee, its members and mission and for the Church as a whole that we are open to the Lord's leading and call the Pastor he would have us shepherd Concordia into its next exciting phase of Christian growth. Calling all Married Couples! Dr. David Ludwig and his wife, Kathy will be offering a 4 week course about marriage and family relationships. He dissects 12 false Christs we often encounter these days. Join us as we examine each Jesus and learn to know the real Jesus more deeply. The Power of WE: God s Gift to Families led by Pastor Dave and Kathy Ludwig. Marriage (and family) relationships are wonderful. You can kid around and have fun together... when you can disagree without the mood shifting... when you feel understood and valuable. This is the POWER of WE. Come to this video-based series to see how you can make this happen in your marriage and family. Please note: This two-hour class will be on January 9, 16, 23, 30, from 6 8 p.m. Sharing/Teaching the Faith led by Katrina Garrison (one of our school teachers).
