Just These Lines, My Friends I hope that you join me in saying, 2017 we ve been expecting you! Really? Yes. Really! The year 2017 isn t the type of year that sneaks up on you. It has been anticipated and expected for many years now. Some of you might recall how former President, Jerry Kieschnick of our Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod called all churches and all people in our churches to be ABLAZE! Through Ablaze, 2017 was on our radar ten years ago as we were called to prepare for this year which is the 500 th Anniversary to the Reformation. Ablaze wasn t simply to organize a big party to celebrate who we are as Lutherans, but rather its emphasis is to remember Whose we are in Christ Jesus. We were invited to do such things as: Pray-Go-Share-Tell-Give all for the intended purpose of more people coming into a living relationship with Jesus. It meant challenging us to involve ourselves in: -Personal Faith Sharing Moments with our friends and neighbors -Starting new mission congregations, and schools In Catawba County this meant: 1. Starting University Christian High School on our campus with plans to move it next to Lenoir-Rhyne University. 2. Starting the Mission Congregation in Mooresville 3. Initiating the Bridge Hispanic Ministry from St. Stephen s, and calling Pastor Brandon Martin to lead this endeavor. 4. Supporting our Hmong Lutheran Missions which will be chartered in 2017 as a new congregation in Newton! How exciting that three of the four items above are thriving in So, 2017 we ve been expecting you. 1

Finally, I hope that you can say this phrase as you turn to your personal 2017 calendars. Why? Because you are God s redeemed child, and so this year hasn t snuck up on you. Rather you enter 2017 knowing that God is the One who controls all time! This year has been on the Holy Spirit s radar from eternity. Christ Jesus knows what will happen in His church before it happens. God s Fatherly eye watches you with loving protection. So as a child of God, join me in saying, 2017 We ve been expecting you. Pastor Schudde New Year s Weekend Worship The Elders determined the following Schedule for our New Year s Weekend. It will follow the same pattern as our Christmas Weekend Worship. There will be a New Year s Eve Service, and one Special Combined Service on Sunday, January 1 at 10:00 a.m. All Services will be in the Main Sanctuary. Be sure to join us on The Lord s Day. 4 Drawn Toward LIGHT I am the Light of the World. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness but have the Light of Life. (John 8:12) The sermons during the Epiphany Season will focus on our Gospel Readings. Each Sunday we will hear how various people were drawn into the Light of Jesus. This Light of Life changes them, and challenges us! Date Reading Theme 1/8 Matthew 2:1-12 Epiphany Light 1/15 John 1:29-42a Welcoming Light 1/22 Matt 4:12-25 Light 7 Days a Week 1/29 Matt. 5:1-12 Light Blessed 2/5 Matt 5:13-20 Righteous Light 2/12 Matt 5:21-37 Reconciling Light 2/19 Matt 5:38-48 Love s Light 2/26 Matt 17:1-9 Light of Christ The Apostle Paul who was drawn into the Light during his call on the Damascus Road declared, Once you were darkness, now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of the Light. (Ephesians 5:8) 3

From Pastor Ben. My dear friends in Christ, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all of you! It is so wonderful to be writing to you as we begin another new year. And 2017 is a very special year for us to be celebrating together. As you probably know, October 31, 2017 will mark the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation. Martin Luther made the Catholic Church aware of his concerns with their theology through his 95 theses. In his attempt to reform the Catholic Church from what he found to be major errors, he actually started a new form of Christianity. This, of course, led to the formation of the many different denominations of Christianity that we have today, including Lutheranism. So, as we make our way to the 500th anniversary celebration, we will continue to hear and learn more about Martin Luther and the Reformation that he began. As always, there are many different things going on here at Concordia this month. I want to take this opportunity to encourage you to get involved a bit more this new year here at your church. And there are so many opportunities for you to do so. One of the easiest ways to get involved in our church is by joining a Bible study or small group. If you are really ready to jump in head first, you could even start your own small group. Through the use of our new Bible study tool, RightNow Media, leading a small group from the comfort of your own home is easier than ever. There are going to be many new and different Bible study opportunities coming up in the New Year. You will be able to find them listed in your weekly Highlights that you receive at church. If you don t have a copy of your Highlights with you, they are always listed on the church calendar on our website If you are already a part of a small group or a weekly Bible study, perhaps you are looking for a different way to serve through Concordia. Our Mission and Ministry Board continually helps people get connected with various organizations in our community that we support. 4

Highways and Hedges and The Corner Table are two great ways that you can help reach out to some of the less fortunate people in our community. There are always opportunities to serve with each of these groups and the wonderful people on the Mission and Ministry Board would love to help get you connected. Or maybe you want to serve inside the church. There are so many different ways that you can do that. Our Board of Assimilation is always looking for helpers to make people feel more comfortable when they visit and first join our church. Helping with the Altar Guild is a wonderful way to serve on Sunday mornings. Becoming a part of the set-up teams that do such a great job at our Praise Service is another opportunity. If you have any questions about any of these opportunities and you just aren t sure where to start, call me or come find me. I ll be happy to help you out any way that I can. As we make our way into the beginning of this New Year, I hope that you will consider some of these ways to serve God and to serve your neighbor. That is the greatest way that we can respond to the amazing grace of God in our lives is by showing that same grace and love to the people around us. I pray that you will have a wonderful and blessed New Year! Your Humble Servant in Christ, Pastor Ben 5

News from Children s Minister, Belinda Bost: As I write this article, our time of Advent is almost over, it is almost time to place Baby Jesus in the manger. My prayer is that through our nativity building each week, children have grown in the knowledge that patience in waiting is good and important, placing the focus on Jesus and the hope, peace and joy that He brings. Take away all the glitter and shopping, trees and gifts, we know why there is a Christmas. Jesus came to us in the Bethlehem manger and He comes into our hearts and our lives each and every day. Be near me, Lord Jesus, I ask you to stay, close by me forever and love me I pray. Bless all the dear children in thy loving care. And take us to heaven to live with thee there. On January 8 th, during Power Hour, children will celebrate Epiphany, the coming of the Kings. We will take a tour of the Chrismon Trees in the sanctuary and learn about all of the beautiful symbols and monograms that hang from the branches. The New Year will bring new and exciting opportunities for our children to grow in their faith walk. Watch for ways for you to be part of this ministry. 10 Emmaus Room 9:15 One Week Only! The Real St. Nick - This Bible study surveys St. Nick and the age-old traditions surrounding him. What St. Nick has set down for us all is a lifestyle of service and going the distance for Jesus Christ. Whether it's staying the executioner's blade from the neck of three innocents, bailing out a man's daughters from prostitution with gold, or simply giving children gifts, St. Nick took his faith to the streets and made a difference as a follower of Christ. Join us in the Emmaus Room on January 8th from 9:15 to 10:15 to learn about The Real St. Nick. Led by Pastor Micheel The Mormons - The Mormon Church (aka The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) means different things to different people. From its feel-good, family oriented TV commercials to its Grammy and Emmy winning Mormon Tabernacle Choir to its bicycling missionaries, the Mormon Church is high profile all the way. Founded in the early 19th century, this religious movement boasts more than 15 million members and 85,000 missionaries, ranking it in the top five of "Christian denominations" in the U.S., according to the National Council of Churches. Join us in the Emmaus Room beginning January 15th for a 6-week study on The Mormons. Led by Pastor Micheel Adult Room 9:15 Beginning -Jan 8 th -"It Starts at Home - Learn to Confidently Teach Your Kids about God"-Led by Cindy Sigmon- In these busy, hectic days we take our kids to sports practices, games, music lessons, school tutoring and other activities to give our children the best opportunities for success. But what if we're missing the chance to teach them what matters most? In these six sessions, we will explore biblical and tangible ways that parents couples, single parents, blended families and grandparents can build a legacy of faith for their children. 9

Everyone is welcome. FAITH DEVELOPMENT- All UCHS students are required to take a Religion class each year. Jon Guelzow, former principal at St. Stephens Lutheran School, teaches our ninth and tenth grade Old and New Testament classes. These classes are making a tremendous impact on some of our students who have not grown up in the church. While we plant the seed, we rely on the Holy Spirit to grow the faith. Faith growth is happening as Mr. Guelzow recently had one young man ask if he could be baptized. SERVICE TO OTHERS- All of our students work to help people in need. Our ninth graders worked at the Samaritans Purse Processing Center in Charlotte. Forty-one of our Juniors and Seniors volunteered their time this semester helping others on days they didn t have an LR class. UCHS students complete thousands of hours of community service every year. What a blessing they are to our community. HICKORY CHRISTMAS PARADE- UCHS, St. Stephens Lutheran School, and Concordia Christian Day School coordinated their efforts with a Lutheran Education in Catawba County presence in the Hickory Christmas Parade this year. UCHS had a float designed and decorated by their Sophomore Class. UCHS students sang Christmas carols and handed out candy along the parade route. This was UCHS s sixth year as part of this community celebration. WINTER SPORTS- Both Basketball and Swimming are off to a great start at UCHS. The Varsity Boys won their first two games of the season, and the Varsity Girls won their first game of the season as well. For the first time, UCHS is fielding a JV basketball team; and they also won their first game. The Swim Team opened their season with a great meet, taking third place overall with a team score of 109 points. Senior, Sadie Texer, recently signed to swim for Butler University. Butler is a Division 1 school. Sadie is the second UCHS athlete to sign a letter of intent but the first to sign with a D1 school. 18

Youth Ministry INFO for January 2017 LEADERSHIP can be defined as The Art of Influence : In JROTC I learned there are 2 styles of Leaders. They are: Autocratic: all decision-making powers are centralized in the leader, as with dictators. These leaders do not ask for input from their team. Democratic: these leaders share decision making with the group which promotes common interests and success of the group s abilities. In JROTC I learned there are 2 kinds of Leaders. They are: Emergent: this person will stand up, emerge from the group, and take the lead when a situation requires it.
