Just These Lines, My Friends It s Still All About Jesus. That s the theme our Synod chose to celebrate this year s 500 th Anniversary of the Reformation. I like that theme, not only for our Synod s emphasis, but for my parting words to you in this Newsletter. It s Still All about Jesus! We certainly can and should celebrate some joyous events that pointed us to Jesus these past 7 ½ years. Five Vicars grew while at Concordia and developed into very fine pastors. They now serve from Alabama to Maryland, from Texas to Missouri. I m excited that the two in Maryland, James Kent and Steve Miller will be preaching and leading liturgy at my installation at St. Paul s Glen Burnie on August 7 th. We sent off a son of the congregation to the Seminary in Mark Moretz. Concordia joined together to support him, and continues to support him and his family as they conclude their journey one year from now when Mark will be ordained into the ministry. We welcomed Pastor Weaver as our first Pastor of Family Life, and soon Victoria Weaver became our first Children s Minister. Home Centered Ministry is a phrase they developed and it continues to be used at Concordia, and now through their ministry also takes root at Gloria Dei, Houston, Texas. We grew into a congregation that lives out Ephesians 4:12 where pastors equip the saints for the work of the ministry. You rose to the challenge. Elders became part of our ministry team to take church to the home-bound. Care Zone Ministers were added to make sure the flock of all ages was remembered with prayers and cards as they went through significant events. 1

Concordia became home to our brothers and sisters of area ELCA churches when their church body left them stranded. We loved them when they were grieving their loss. We celebrated baptisms and for the first time in my ministry I was baptizing more youth and adults than infants, and sometimes entire families. Our Youth Confirmation Classes these past seven years grew to an average size of 17 individuals who stood before God s Altar in their red stoles to profess their faith. More received the Sacrament of the Lord s Supper as we emphasized this gift of grace and welcomed Seventh Graders who had been instructed and received home visits from pastors and vicars. Ninety-one in our community of faith at Concordia were called from Saints below to Saints above, and we celebrated that Jesus wipes every tear from our eyes. It s Still All about Jesus! Even through times that we as a congregation struggled with direction, and through times of disagreement. Not everything we tried succeeded, but God blessed us more than we deserved. Not every person added to our staff at the church and at the school partnered well in the values and the ways God has led Concordia to faithfully do its ministry. However, God has fields and places for these brothers and sisters in Christ to serve in His kingdom work. Because It s All about Jesus we can let go of hurts, we ask forgiveness, we receive his grace, and we anticipate His blessings. Thank God it s not about Pastor Schudde, or about individual members. When Concordia has gathered in the past, and will gather in the future may it always be All About Jesus. Pastor Schudde 2

Patriotic Service... Concordia will honor God's blessing of our nation's Independence Day on Sunday, July 2nd. PrimeTimers meet July 10 th.. Join us for our July potluck in the Emmaus Room. Come at 11:30am and bring your favorite dish to share. Mr. Dave Beringer, our new Principal, will join us for this time of fellowship and fun. He will share information about his ministry both past and present. 3

News from Children s Minister, Belinda Bost: Children s Ministry News Belinda Bost, Children s Minister Thanks to all you volunteered and donated to our VBS, A Mighty Fortress. What a privilege we had to share the love of Jesus each night to children and their families in our community and our congregation. During VBS week we collected flip flops for Operation Christmas Child and worked on projects for Nanny s Korner Day Care Center in Lumberton, NC as part of our mission outreach. See the pictures on the church website and around the church on various boards. Kindness Rocks for Summer Sunday School During July, Power Hour Kids will be painting rocks with words and pictures of love and encouragement to hide for others to find. Look around the church grounds as you are coming and going; you may find one. If you find one, take a picture of it and send it to Mrs. Bost or let her know that you found it. Take the Kindness Rock with you to hide for someone else to find. Follow this project on Facebook and Instagram #concordiakidsrock. Help Needed! We are seeking a Nursery workers for the 8:00, 10:30 or 10:45 services. This would be a great opportunity for a college student wanting to earn some extra income. 4

Stewardship Corner I will bless you, so that you will be a blessing (Gen. 12:2). The Lord blessed Abraham so that he would be a blessing. How did He bless Abraham? He promised that from His seed would come the savior of the nations. And Abraham believed that promise, trusted that the Lord would provide it just as He had promised. Thus, everything Abraham did was colored by that promise. He willingly gave of himself and his household in service to the Lord in view of that promise. Our Father in heaven has richly blessed us. Not only has He given us everything that we need to support this body and life, but He has also provided, that promised seed in His Son, our Lord, Jesus Christ. He is the savior of the nations. He is the redeemer of the world. He is the one who has conquered sin, death, and the power of the devil by His death, resurrection, and ascension. Just as we are richly blessed, we are also thereby freed to be a blessing. Since God has endowed us with His gifts, we are set to endow others. Thus, we give of the blessings we have received so that others may be blessed. We do this in our homes, our communities, and our churches. We press the blessings God has lavished upon us in service to those around us. We use our time, our talents, and our treasures to be a blessing even as they have been a blessing to us. The Lord blesses us. And He enlists us to be a blessing to others. So, whenever you put that envelope in the collection plate, when you set out to serve at the local food pantry, when you sit down to help your kids with homework, think of this: The Lord has blessed you, so that you will be a blessing. 5

Independence Day Prayer There is no greater feeling of liberty than to experience freedom from sin and death that you provided for me through Jesus Christ. Today my heart and my soul are free to praise you. For this, I am very thankful. On this Independence Day, I am reminded of all those who have sacrificed for my freedom, following the example of your Son, Jesus Christ. Let me not take my freedom, both physical and spiritual, for granted. May I always remember that a very high price was paid for my freedom. My freedom cost others their very lives. Lord, today, bless those who have served and continue to give their lives for my freedom. With favor and bounty, meet their needs and watch over their families. Dear Father, I am so thankful for this nation. For all the sacrifices others have made to build and defend this country, I am grateful. Thank you for the opportunities and freedoms we have in the United States of America. Help me never to take these blessings for granted. Help me to live my life in a way that glorifies you, Lord. Give me the strength to be a blessing in someone's life today, and grant me the opportunity to lead others into the freedom that can be found in knowing Jesus Christ. In your name I pray. Amen 15

Reformation 2017 It s Still All About Jesus The Reformation was not about anything new, but about returning to the unchanged and unchanging truth. So it is still today. This time leading up to the celebration of the 500 th anniversary of the Reformation is not a time for novelty. It is a time to return: to the truth, to the basics, to the foundation. Do you remember the Small Catechism? Many of us were made to memorize the catechism (or at least part of it) during our Confirmation classes. Some of us might have even suffered through a public examination over its contents. How much do you remember? Say it with me: I believe that I cannot by my own reason or strength believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to Him Can you finish? Do you remember where that is found? (It s in Luther s explanation of the Third Article of the Apostles Creed.) It s time to return. Luther wrote the Small Catechism for the instruction of laypeople. Luther intended the Small Catechism to be used at church and in the home to instruct children in the faith and to reinforce the faith in the hearts and minds of adults. There is no better time than in this year of the 500 th anniversary of the Reformation to review the catechism. Read it for yourself. Refresh the theology in your mind. Pray the catechism daily. Memorize it. But even more, teach it. If you are a parent, teach it to your children. As you have opportunity, share it with your friends and peers. The catechism teaches the fundamentals of the Christian faith: the Ten Commandments, the Lord s Prayer, the Apostles Creed, the Sacrament of Baptism, the Sacrament of the Altar and the Office of the Keys and Confession. This small book is well worth your time and study. May this be a time when we return to the Word and Sacraments, when we turn to Christ and His love. It s still all about Jesus. 16
