2 Just These Lines, My Friends Summer is a special time. It allows us to break from routines, explore new territories, go on new adventures. Let s plan to do that together on Sundays! Too often the Psalms are not emphasized in worship. So this summer the plan is to break from the routine, explore new territory and go on a new adventure. You can relate! Most of the Psalms reflect the heart of one who goes through daily struggles and circumstances, and their cry is often, What is a follower of God to do?. Each Sunday we will explore the cries of our own hearts that far too often ask: What s a Christian to Do? June 11 th What s a Christian to do In response to the Powerful and Persuasive? Text: Psalm 8 June 18 th What s a Christian to do In response to New Opportunities? Text: Psalm 100 June 25 th -- What s a Christian to do-- In Response to Danger and Attack? Text: Psalm 91:1-16 July 2 nd What s a Christian to do-- In Response to-changing Worldly Values? Text: Psalm 119: July 9 th What s a Christian to do-- In Response to-changing Times? Text: Psalm 145:1-14 July 16 th What s a Christian to do-- In Response to- Where is God in all of this? Text: Psalm 65:1-13 July 23 rd -- Paul Nelson preaches this weekend. I will be in Wisconsin for a nephew s wedding and family vacation. July 30 th What s a Christian to do-- In Response to-feeling Vulnerable? Text: Psalm 125 Join me this summer. Let s explore the questions on our hearts. Pastor Schudde 1

5 Be the HOPE for Lumberton, is the theme for our VBS and Summer Sunday School mission project. During the VBS week, Concordia Kids will learn of the disaster relief taking place in Lumberton NC. Nanny s Korner Day Care Center was flooded as well as many homes and businesses during Hurricane Matthew this past October. We will partner with Eric Hollar, Associate Pastor of Bethel Lutheran Church, the on-site Disaster Relief Coordinator for the Southeastern District as work continues on the Day Care Center. During VBS our 5 th and 6 th grade pre-teen class will be creating art work for walls, plastic storage crate seating for the preschool rooms, large chalk/magnetic boards for the toddler rooms and a whimsy painted rocker for the infant room. Brain Hefner will be leading this class. Register now for this service project using the link: or fill out a registration form found in the bulletin or welcome stations. Your pre-teen will not want to miss out on this service opportunity. In addition, all children during VBS will have a part in making a handprint quilt with the help of our Concordia quilters for Hurricane Matthew Disaster Relief. Eric Hollar and his disaster response team have been working for many months with the clean-up and the rebuilding of the Nanny s Korner Day Care Center and hopefully move in day will happen this summer. We are so excited to be helping our neighbors. Bernice Cromorite, owner of 4

14 Stewardship Corner One of the best known and beloved psalms is Psalm 23, the Shepherd Psalm. There we learn that the Lord is our shepherd. And since He is our shepherd, we will not want. We will not suffer want because the Lord, our shepherd, will lead us to green pastures and beside still waters. In other words, the Lord, our shepherd, will provide for all that we need in both body and soul. Yet, we live as though this is not the case. We live as though we actually suffer from want, that the Lord, our shepherd, will not provide for all that we need. And thus, we live as though the Lord is not our shepherd. And that means that we live as though we are not the Lord's sheep. How do we do this? We do it when we put anything else before Him and His provision for us. When we think that going to work is more important than receiving the gifts that He won for us on the cross, a violation of the First and Third Commandments. We do it when we fail to give generously of the first fruits of what the Lord has provided for us because we think we don't know what the future will bring, even though He has promised that He will lead us to green pastures and still waters. We do it when we think that the Lord is only in the business of helping those who will help themselves, we do this because we have a mind set on earthly, temporal things and not on heavenly, eternal things. We do this because we have stopped hearing the call of our shepherd, which comes through His Word. The Word of God is how our shepherd calls us to himself. Through that Word, the Holy Spirit gathers and enlightens us with His gifts. Through that Word, we are kept holy and nourished in the one true faith, the faith that follows our Shepherd wherever He leads us. He promises to lead you to your true home, 13

15 to the land flowing with milk and honey, to a better country, not of this world, but a heavenly one. And so, here's the good news: The Lord is your shepherd still, even, and especially, for wayward sheep. For Jesus seeks and saves those who are lost. He finds the lost sheep and carries them back to the fold. He is the shepherd that lays down his life for His sheep. The Lord is your shepherd. Let us live then as His sheep. Did you know? 24 Christian Prison Pen Pal Ministry -- Growing! A letter from Daniel in California: My name is Daniel... serving a life sentence.... I m in need of a Spanish study Bible. I have been blessed with a Christian celly (cellmate) who has a study Bible. He has spoken highly of your ministry.... I would be greatly blessed to receive a Spanish version from you and any other literature you may have to further my relationship with my Creator. Although we have access to all kinds of Bibles and would love to send one of ours, prisons have rules about what can be sent, and the Bibles have to be sent from an approved vendor. Daniel has been sent a Spanish Study Bible. An expansion of our ministry in Texas, James writes: I have also sent up a prayer for Jams and P.G. Bear that they might find every beautiful and secret thing that is His will for them to see. (Deuteronomy 29:29)!... Please add these to your ministry, Sister, for His glory. Amen. (63 inmates in his dorm ) Brother Rick was just here yesterday.... This is a big thing for Brother Rick. He has been coming back into the prison since he got out, I guess, about ten years ago.... Brother Rick has become an official Certified Volunteer Chaplain Assistant. It s Rick s first major program. And what is done here, this year, may become the new (and awesome!) State of Texas standard for faith-based dorm programs. Amen. There are currently about ten-plus volunteers who write letters to inmates. Jams Ballbach, a Concordia member talented in photography and graphic arts, volunteers his time by creating a two-page, both sides, testimony of the beauty of God s creation. One inmate does Bible studies that we print and distribute. Kaye Deal writes a letter on a faith-based theme and illustrates it with her sketches. Geri Halma writes Bible studies. We just finished a chapter-by-chapter study of Joseph in Genesis.
