The Valley View October 3, 2018 The Counsel of the Lord It should go without saying that we need to seek the will and wisdom of God in all things. Yet there are times when we are so sure of our expertise, skills and wisdom that we think we can forgo an inquiry of God. Such was the case of the Israelites soon after they entered the Promised Land. They were forbidden by God from forming any kind of alliance or making any kind of covenant with the people of the land. One day a group of people came to them and presented themselves as a people who lived in a far distant land. They told how the account of the great works of God had made it to their distant land and that they wanted to enter into a covenant with the Israelites. This covenant would keep the Israelites from attacking them and they would become their servants. The Bible records that these people had taken with them moldy bread and worn out wineskins and told the Israelite leaders that they lived so far away that when they left the bread was fresh and the wineskins new. Here is the response of the leaders, 14 So the men took some of their provisions, but did not ask counsel from the LORD. 15 And Joshua made peace with them and made a covenant with them, to let them live, and the leaders of the congregation swore to them. Joshua 9:14-15 (ESV) The all-important phrase in that verse is but [they] did not ask counsel from the LORD. The things presented to them were so obvious that it seemed that an inquiry of the LORD was unnecessary. First, the search is underway for an Associate Pastor of Family Ministries. I really appreciate the emphasis the search team leader, Paul Naundorf, is giving to prayer. He has made this a major emphasis and theme of our meeting and communication. I want to encourage each of us in the congregation to lift up this process in prayer. It is our strong conviction that God has for some time been preparing a person for this position. We need to pray for discernment and wisdom that only comes from God to make sure we have the person He has chosen for this time in the history of Valley Baptist Church. Tuesday, October 9 7:00am, Worship Center open for prayer 8:00-4:15pm, CC Homeschool 10:00-12:00pm, Grandparents/ Parents Prayer Group The second matter is our next phase of building. A few years ago, we did discern that God was leading us in this direction and we have been in a time of preparation and planning. There will soon be times when decisions need to be made to move forward. These decisions need to be based on the discernment of the body of Christ as to what God is saying to His church. Prayer plays a key role in this. Our relationship with our Lord Jesus Christ is vital to hearing His voice. Use this occasion to draw near to God and as the scripture promises, He will draw near to you. (James 4:8) Pray for God s protection from the devil during these times that he would not be able to cause confusion or disunity in the body of Christ. As long as we keep this focus we will recognize our total dependence on God.

Do you want to more fully understand and live out the Word of God? A new year for Disciples Path begins October 7, meeting weekly during the Sunday School hour in the Cove Rm. C04. This is a one-year intentional plan for discipleship. Patterned after Jesus model of discipleship, Disciple s Path leaders will facilitate an intentional path of transformational discipleship in an intimate, small group setting where we will learn disciplines and practices that make us mature as believers in Christ. Together we will explore the foundations of following Jesus and discover answers to questions that all disciples ask. Examining the Gospels, we will follow the journey of Jesus and His disciples to gain a deeper understanding of what it means to follow Christ in everyday life. Our goal will be to establish a clear understanding of what we believe and discover our role in preparing people to meet Jesus. Join us on Oct. 7 in the Cove Rm. 5 Join us for our annual potluck dinner & talent show. I am so excited to share that our church will once again be participating in the Operation Christmas Child project! It will look a bit different this time, as we will collect items and funds as a church and then the children and preschool ministries will help to sort, organize, and pack the boxes in November. Please prayerfully consider joining us in this ministry opportunity! Our goal this year is to pack 50 boxes for boys and girls, ranging in ages from 2 to 14 years old. To participate, please look for the table outside of the sanctuary, where you can sign up to bring in items or donate funds toward the shipping costs and boxes. When you sign up, please also take the corresponding tag and then return the items no later than Sunday, November 4, 2018 to room 128 in the preschool hall. If choosing to make a monetary donation, please make checks payable to Valley Baptist Church and write OCC on the memo line (don t forget to sign up on the form, too, so we know it is covered!). And, most importantly, please be in prayer for every person involved in this project; from those donating, to those physically preparing and packing the boxes, to those that will receive them, and those that will lead in sharing the gospel and discipleship. Operation Christmas Child does not stop at delivering a box but continues after that to provide discipleship opportunities to those that receive Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior!
