2 Just These Lines, My Friends Just these lines, my friends Blessed Day of the Resurrection! It is because Christ Jesus burst alive from the tomb that we have a powerful, life-changing message of Good News! This message is shared by our words, and also by our actions of life-changing love to our neighbors. With Easter, Concordia is entering into Phase 3 of our ineighborhood action plan. -CONNECT January-February in Small Groups around The Art of Neighboring -GROW February-March in Small Groups and Wednesday Worship -BRIDGE- April June So what will it look like as we Bridge? The definition of a bridge is to connect from one side to the other. That s what God s Easter People are called to do. To share the Good News across barriers to those who haven t yet full experienced the Good News of God s love for them in Christ Jesus. Bridges can be small. Like when one neighbor bridges to another neighbor on your particular street. Bridges can be medium size. List when a small group bridges to our community in ways of serving that shares the love of Christ. Bridges can be large. Like when an entire congregation involves itself in reaching out to the broader community. One example of this could be VBS in June. There are no limits to the number of bridges or the size of bridges. Our resurrected Lord, himself, called us into the bridge-building task! 1

3 What an exciting Easter Season it will be as we: Join together in celebrating our Risen Savior in Worship on April 5 th Join together in bridge-building the good news of Life in Christ Jesus for All. So get out your tools, using whatever God has gifted you. Dedicate some time, because this project is commanded by Christ Himself. Vision in prayer, for we surely can t do it on our own strength. Now build! Pastor Schudde Worship Schedule Maundy Thursday April 2 nd Noon or 6:30 p.m. service Good Friday April 3 rd Noon or 6:30 p.m. service Easter Sunday April 5 th- 7:00 a.m. Sunrise begins on the courtyard featuring Concordia s choirs 10:30 a.m. Festival Service featuring Concordia s choirs and the Unifour Brass Ensemble; 10:45 a.m. Praise Service in Concordia s Family Life Center 2

4 Vicar Program Returns to Concordia Concordia has been declared an excellent training ground for future pastors by both the seminary and our Southeastern District of the LCMS. We certainly have a heart for raising up future pastors as is evident in the fact that we were host to a Concordia College that trained many future pastors in the early 20 th Century. we have had numerous vicars over the years. our congregation has responded favorably to the Seminarian Support Fund to provide assistance to sons of our congregation who go into the ministry. The 2015 congregation operating budget, which was approved by the voters, included a line item to re-enter the Vicar Program. Our application for a Vicar has been sent on to the Southeastern District Office, and forwarded to Concordia Seminary-St. Louis. God willing we will find out if we have been assigned a vicar the first part of May. He would arrive on our campus the first of August. The seminary, however, has informed all the congregations who applied for a vicar that there are more requests than there are vicars. This is due to the decreased enrollment of those who are studying to be pastors (about half what it was in the 1980s and 1990s). Concordia can play a big role in raising up, and training up future pastors. Please keep this need of our church body in your prayers. 3

5 Announcing NEW SERMON SERIES Resurrection BRIDGE Construction will follow our 2015 of CONNECT-GROW-BRIDGE this series follows our plan to better reach out to our Neighbors with ineighborhood. The epistle of I John will serve as God s Blueprints for construction. April 12-- I John 1:1-7 Pylons We have seen, we share, we proclaim also to you so that you may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father, and his Son, Jesus. I John 1:3 One cannot build a bridge (or even start a bridge) without first setting the pylons. Digging deep to bedrock will be crucial! April 19-- I John 2:1-10 Spans He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, but not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world. I John 2:2 Connecting from one side to the other is the goal. Both sides are important. Neither is superior to the other. 4

6 April 26-- I John 2:15-25 Planking You have the anointing of the Holy One, and all of you know the TRUTH. (I John 2:20) The planking needs to be straight, and the pieces need to be butting up against one another tightly for the bridge to withstand the strains of heavy traffic. May 3-- I John 3:1-2, Suspension Cables This is the message you have heard from the beginning: We should love one another. This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers. (I John 3:11, 16) The Cables are used to hold it all together. They both reach from one side to the other also reach from the main cables down to the decking to offer it support. May 10-- I John 4:1-11, 16b-19 Decking Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God, and everyone who loves has be born of God and knows God. He who does not love does not know God, because God is Love. (I John 4:7-8). On this Mother s Day we get to talk about The Decking. We know that there is a lot beneath the surface of the decking. However, that smooth surface is important to give us confidence. May 17--I John 5:1-5, 9-13 Railings This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands. This is love for God: to obey his commands. (I John 5:2-3) Railings protect and keep us from danger. So also God gives us His commands which are not burdensome. 5

10 Easter Bible Studies April 12 th - May 24 th Bridge Out With the Good News! Join us this Easter season as we seek to bridge out with the Good News of the Resurrection, through the study of God s word and fellowship with one another! Here are some of the Bible study opportunities just for you that we will be having during the Easter season. Mormons: Who are they, what do they believe? led by Pastor Weaver. Emmaus Room. A Lutheran Hour Ministries Bible study on the Mormon faith. They are our neighbors, our friends, co-workers, even family members, but we often don t know what they actually believe. Most of our understanding is shrouded in myth and misunderstanding. Mormons claim to be Christian, but Christians say they are not. We do know we have the truth and good news of Jesus Christ that they need to hear and believe. Join us in this study as we learn what Mormons actually believe, and how we can bridge out them with the Good News of Jesus Christ. Vanishing Grace: led by small group leaders. What is the Good News that we have to share in our culture today? How can we do when the Christian faith seems to be all but rejected by our society at large, and sometimes even with hostility? In this video-based, small group Bible study, you will learn effective ways to share God s grace with others and to bridge out with the Good News of Jesus Christ. 9

14 From Our Dorcas Society This is an Easter poem that a resident from the Alberta House wrote Jeers and taunts are night and day Encountered by the Prince of Peace, Showered by their spittle s spray. Unrepentant they will not cease. Some stones cannot be rolled away. Calvary s hill looms stark and grim; He goes without a murmur on, Reeling from whip marks covering Him. In loved one s eyes, all hope is gone. Salvation s price to make us whole: Thorns, nails, and agony of His soul. In stone cold tomb His body lies, Sealed and guarded by Roman might. Long was the wait, nervous the eyes On Easter a Being of Light Rolled back the stone, death lost its prize; Delivered are we from the night. Jerry Saunders 1996 You Are Cordially Invited The congregation is cordially invited to a 50th Anniversary Reception In honor of David N. and Sandy Smith Sunday, April 12th, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. In the Emmaus Room of Concordia Lutheran Church. 13

19 From the Parish Nurse- April 2015 The Daylight Savings change seems to come earlier each year- did you experience any difficulties with sleep? According to Dr. Oscar Schwartz, the Medical Director of Barnes-Jewish West Hospital s Sleep Center, everyone does experience difficulties with the time change. Teens, who typically are already behind in needed sleep hours, do not adjust as quickly as others. A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, noted heart attacks increased five times after the time change. Sleep is very important to the health of your body. Recent studies by prominent researchers, including Nobel Prize winners, have shown that new nerve cells are produced during sleep. These nerve cells are affected by sleep deficit and by a poor quality of sleep. If you or a significant other have difficulties falling asleep, staying asleep, waking during the night, snoring or feeling tired after a night of sleep discuss this with your primary care provider. Your provider may order a sleep study- the medical term for this is a polysomnogram. This involves spending the night at a sleep center with electrodes attached to your head, face, chest and limbs and you may also have a belt placed around your stomach and chest. A trained technician or technologist will monitor the recordings provided by the electrodes and the readings of chest/stomach depth and movement while you sleep. If you experience episodes where you stop breathing (apnea) during the night, you may be awakened by the technician. The technician will explain that you are experiencing sleep apnea and will help you select a mask and connect you to a C-PAP machine. You will then be allowed to go back to sleep and will continue to be monitored. There are different types of sleep apnea and your primary care provider will review the results of your sleep study with you. You may be referred to a neurologist and/or to a surgeon if you have obstructive sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is very serious because you are not getting adequate oxygen that is needed by your body. If left untreated, sleep apnea can cause heart disease, including strokes and high blood pressure, headaches, diabetes and depression. When I think about the new baby nerve cells (neurons) that grow while we sleep, I am reminded of what Scripture tells us in Lamentations 3:

20 Through the Lord s mercies we are not consumed because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness. Please remember those in our church family who mourn the earthly loss of loved ones- although they rejoice in the knowledge that it is an earthly loss only because their loved ones are now in Heaven with our Lord. Please feel free to contact me if you have health related questions or concerns. If I cannot provide an answer, I will do my best to contact someone who can. I do not use your name or any information that would indicate for whom I seek information. May you be drawn closer to your relationship with Jesus the Christ as we move closer to Good Friday and the celebration of our Risen Lord. 22 Concordia Christian Day School A Tradition of Excellence in a Changing World Enroll Now for We are now accepting enrollment applications for the school year. When you are talking with your family and friends about schools, please remind them of the outstanding Christian education available at Concordia. Call the school for a personal tour. We want every seat to be filled. We want every possible child to be given the opportunity to learn about Jesus. Hearts for Jesus Project Our February Mission Project was to raise money to build a Christian School in Uganda. This project is in partnership with all the other Lutheran Schools in the Southeastern District and we call it our Hearts for Jesus Mission Project. Concordia's sixth grade class was in charge of educating our students and promoting this ministry need. They did a great job of challenging our students to give up something so they could give that money to help children in Africa. Their efforts were rewarded as our students donated $2,357 to help these children have a Christian school. Thank you to all our parents for helping your children learn what it means to give so others have what we are blessed with every day. Open House Concordia will be hosting Open House on Friday, April 17. We are inviting anyone who would like to learn more about our school to join us. We have an amazing school and want to share our program with prospective parents and grandparents. We will start at 9:00 with a continental breakfast and registration. The Open House will include an information session with the principal as well as tours and visiting some classrooms. Visitors often remark that they never realized how huge our school was until they took a tour. Encourage your friends and relatives to check us out. Financial assistance for tuition is available. 21

From the pool of five regional winners, Barnes & Noble will name one teacher the Barnes & Noble National Teacher of the Year. The winning teacher will receive $5,000 and the title of Teacher of the Year. The winner will be recognized at a special community celebration at a local Barnes & Noble store. The winning teacher's school will receive $5,000 as well. 22

24 Did You Know? In fifth grade the students wrote a paragraph on "how to" make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Mrs. Garrison then followed the directions as they were written to a lot of humor. Students learned the value of writing and following accurate and detailed directions. We have an eighth grader and several former students at Concordia who are volunteering their time after school to tutor students. Not everyone is willing to give up their time and volunteer to help someone. We are thankful for these Concordia students and their willingness to do this. Our 8th grade Science class used decibel meter apps and Real Times Analyzer apps on their ipads to study noise levels and frequencies in our church and school classrooms. Spanish classes use a Clothes Relay Race to learn the names of different clothes. There are two baskets of clothes and two teams. Students run a relay where they have to identify the article of clothing, put it on, and then run to the other basket. They tag the next runner on their team who does the same thing. Our Science classes are starting to grow 100 tomato plants that eventually will be planted in the Hope Gardens of Catawba County. Our Spanish classes are using Google Voice. Students connect with Mrs. Reid's Google Voice that asks a question in Spanish. The students then have to respond to the question in Spanish. The PS3 class went searching on St. Patrick's Day and found a pot of gold. They were so excited and wanted to share the news with everyone. The PK4 class reported to Mr. U that a leprechaun messed up their classroom and they made a marshmallow rainbow! Mrs. Glenn and Mrs. Sinclair told the children about Irish traditions and leprechaun pranks.. The Second Graders had a distance learning program on the food chain. The presenter, from Ann Arbor, MI, showed them live animals and talked about how certain species feed on other species to survive. 23

25 A Concordia Welcome Home Last month, Concordia had a special day for Kindergartener Briana Kelly who reunited with her mom for the first time in eight months. Briana has been staying with her Aunt Angie and Uncle Shawn Kelly while her mother, Catherine, has been serving in the United States Navy in Bahrain. Briana has not seen her mother since August 1. The whole school gathered in the gym, as Briana's mother surprised her. It was an emotional moment for all who were a part of this celebration of family. The local reporters and TV stations were here to witness and report on this joyous reunion. Class Trips The 7 th and 8 th graders went on a four day trip to Washington, DC and Gettysburg last month. They toured the Capital, the Holocaust Museum, the Smithsonian Museums, Mt. Vernon, Arlington Cemetery, the National Cathedral and much more. It is a unique opportunity to teach our students about our nation s history and how God has blessed the United States of America. Mr. Unverfehrt, Mrs. Karre, Mrs. Alms and Mr. Fulton were the chaperones for this trip. The 5 th and 6 th graders went on a three day trip to Charleston, South Carolina. They visited Ft. Sumpter, stayed on the aircraft carrier the USS Yorktown, took a boat to study sea life and ecology, visited a plantation, and much more. This is a great opportunity to bring to life history and science topics that they have or will be studying. Mr. Keever, Mr. VonRentzel, Mrs. Garrison and several parents were the chaperones for this trip. Summer Day Camps Information Preschool and School Age It s that time of year again! Summer Day Camp applications are available on the school website or in the office! VARSITY BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT Concordia's Varsity Boys and Girls Basketball teams traveled to Richmond, Virginia this past month to participate in the 48th Annual Lutheran Invitational Tournament. This four team tournament featured teams from Baltimore, Richmond and us. The Varsity girls played their first game against a taller team from Luther Memorial in Richmond. Concordia played a tremendous defense for the first half, but couldn't keep it up as Luther Memorial pulled away in the second half to win. Concordia's girls were led by Anna Grace Hinshaw in scoring and the whole team in defensive intensity. The Concordia girls faced the same challenges against St. Paul s Lutheran School from Kingsville, MD. Again they played tremendous defense, limiting 25

27 the team from Maryland to just a few baskets in the first quarter. In the second half Concordia was unable to keep the taller St. Paul's team from getting multiple rebounds and scoring. Concordia lost to take Fourth Place in the Tournament. The Varsity boys played St. Paul's in their first game. Our team was the taller team and our strong defense resulted in a victory. Concordia had 10 players score in the game as the starters saw limited playing time. The Varsity boys played a very tall and talented team from Concordia Prep in Baltimore in the Championship game. Concordia fell behind by 10 points at the half, but rallied in the third quarter to tie it up. The very physical game was close and exciting. Concordia Prep had a three point lead with four seconds left. We took a great shot as time expired to tie it up, but the shot bounced off the rim. One difference was at the free throw line as Concordia Prep made 13 out of 18 free throws and Concordia was only 6 out of 11. The Concordia Crusaders took Second Place in the 2015 LIT Tournament. Golf News Concordia's Golf Team played their first match of the season last month at Warrior Golf Club. They finished 2nd behind Salisbury Academy who had a 178. Concordia had a 191, Sacred Heart had a score of 200, and Hickory Christian Academy had a score of 208. Conner Matthews had the lowest score of 47 followed by Paul Karre, Davis Chamberlain, and Houston Nelson who all had 48. Please Remember the Scholarship Fund and School Endowment Fund in your will! 26

29 Youth Ministry INFO for April 2015 The following article continues the topic of youth growth and change began in March s newsletter This Change is Affecting His Faith (the following passages are taken from the book, sticky faith by Dr. Kara E. Powell & Dr. Chap Clark, published by Zondervan, 2011, page 182.) God created us as whole people, fully integrated, so that our perspectives and convictions all emerge from the same complex center. Generally that center is considered to be the will, the seat of our volition, where decisions are chosen and owned. This means that as your child grows, whatever they are going through in one area of life impacts all the others. As your son or daughter matures, they will begin to explore their sense of self, what they believe, and then also test out their own voice along the way. As they do, they are exhibiting growth and movement that are vital as they move into adulthood. As parents, it is easier to celebrate the exercise of this newfound assertiveness and developing independence in some areas than in others. When your daughter arrives home and invades your small group gathering, proceeding to engage in the conversation, you swell with pride. But when that same child forcefully defends the legalization of marijuana at a dinner with extended family, you may not be so excited. As your kids grow up, remember that they are trying to pull together a wide variety of messages, expectations, and agendas that are seeking their attention. Your investment is not minor, nor easily lost, yet your children must go through the process of deciding for themselves what path they are going to take. This process is messy and, for the short run, at least, tends to affect their faith. DCE Chris L. Henze -- Youth Minister
