2 From the Pastor s Pen In Lent, we prepare our hearts to receive our crucified and risen Lord. Lent is the beginning of our Easter season. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, March 6, and ends after our Good Friday Service. Lent is a time of repentance, beginning when we receive ashes on our foreheads as a sign and reminder that we are mortal, we all shall die, and therefore need to be forgiven regularly until that day when sin and forgiveness are wrapped up in the resurrection power and love of Jesus. Way back, in the early days of Christianity, a 40-day period was to prepare adult catechumens for baptism and admission to the Church. This time was a period of instruction and examination to help new Christians prepare for the life of discipleship. Subsequently, this 40-day period was associated with Jesus 40 days in the wilderness leading up to his temptation by Satan. It also is a remembrance of the 40 years traveling in the wilderness on the way to the Promised Land. So, as we travel to our eternal destiny, we identify with Jesus in the wilderness, because we are tempted and need to rest our case on the Word of the Lord. We also use this time to learn to trust more fully that the Lord will provide direction, feed us with heavenly manna, and bless us by his grace as we approach our final destination. So the tone of Lent is more somber than our usual worship times. We forego during Lent the joyous expression of Alleluia (Praise the Lord), which reappears on Easter morning. So during Lent, we focus on our need for repentance, for forgiveness, for the grace of God through Christ our Lord to fill us with greater commitment to be disciples in our world. The disciplines of Lent for the disciples of Jesus include more regular Bible reading, more frequent prayer, more participation in worship, and even, for some, fasting (giving up some food, a meal, some time, some fun activity, for more intense time for prayer and meditation. Blessed Lent. Pastor Paul 1

3 A Word from Bethlehem March 31 Christians in Bethlehem need our support. In the Holy Land, for the first time since Jesus resurrection, the Christian population is only 1%. On March 31, we ll hear a little bit about how we might help Christians there. Also, we will have opportunity to purchase handcarved olivewood religious articles made by Christians in Bethlehem. Perhaps some of you have actually visited Christmas Lutheran Church in Bethlehem. The 5 th Sunday offering on this day will be designated for the support of this ministry. From Vicar Alex Press On! Many of us have goals in life. We want to travel the world, meet our true love, land that dream job, find happiness and fulfillment. These goals order our lives and actions. We do what we do because we want to reach our goal. But are we pursuing the right goal? Young or old, we often question whether or not our lives have a goal at all. We ask, Why has God left me here so long? Is there a purpose for me? What should I do with my life? The good news is that there is a purpose to your life. God has called you into Jesus and set you on the road of discipleship. This road is long and hard, but God has promised to bring you safely to the goal he has set before you. Join us this Lenten season for our midweek worship at 11:15 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. as we read through Philippians and rediscover the goal of Christian discipleship and the road that God has set us on in Jesus. 4 Ash Wednesday A cross on your forehead? Ashes on your face? What s it all about? Ashes: an ancient sign of repentance. Cross: the sign of the Savior, Jesus. It s nothing fancy; it s only one way to humbly admit to the world that you are a sinner in need of forgiveness and you hope for forgiveness because of Jesus death on the cross. On Ash Wednesday we feel the ashes pressed into our forehead in the shape of the cross. On Ash Wednesday we begin to examine our life of discipleship. On Ash Wednesday, we recognize our mortality You are dust and to dust you shall return. On Ash Wednesday, we are offered the Bread of Life and the Cup of Salvation in Holy Communion for our forgiveness and for strength for the way. Come, worship together on Ash Wednesday, March 6 when we gather at 11:15 a.m. and again at 6:30 p.m. Sermon title: It s All About The Heart. From the Sloters How time flies. Just the other day, Ashlie and I pulled into the driveway at the vicar house, the car packed to the ceiling with clothes and excitement. That was seven months ago. We are already halfway through our vicarage year. Thank you for welcoming Ashlie, Alexander, and me to share the life that God has blessed you with at Concordia. We couldn t have expected to grow to love this church so much. It will be a sad day when we leave, but until then, we look forward to continuing to serve with you and learn from you here at Concordia. 3

Concordia was still in the game at half time down by only 7 points. After halftime, however, we could not maintain the pace of the bigger TriCity team. Concordia was led once again by Brady Chamberlain. We end the season having made significant improvements and look forward to next year when we return 10 players for their final campaign. We lose John Moore whose great smile, wonderful attitude and exuberant participation will definitely be missed. Congratulations John Moore!
