January 2013 Monthly Newsletter Concordia Evangelical Lutheran Church 216 Fifth Avenue SE Conover, North Carolina

Just these lines, my friends Who were the Significant People who died in 2012? Just before New Years, the TV Networks each shared with their viewers the list of those that they thought worthy of mentioning. The list included people like: Andy Griffith of Mayberry RFD Dick Clark of American Band Stand General Norman Schwarzkopf, commander of the Allied Forces in Desert Storm Sally Ride, the first woman into space Neil Armstrong, the first man on the moon Mike Wallace and Andy Rooney of Sixty Minutes Phyllis Diller, Comedian Larry Hagman, of I Dream of Jeanie, and Dallas These individuals, in some way, helped to shape our lives and our American culture. Concordia has its own list of Significant People who died in In my book these individuals are more significant than those listed above. They helped to shape our faith-life. The list includes people like: Hal Kaylor, who kept a bible by his bed stand and read it each night Crawford Bost, who taught Sunday School for many years Bud Spencer, who broke in new vicars when they visited him Margaret Sparkman, who painted gourds for those in nursing homes Clarence Wallace, who loved to set up a Christmas display for his neighbors to enjoy Annie Bolick, who faithfully sat in the front row at worship Poss Gilbert, who served as an usher and LLL member Frances Winters, who was the first to arrive at the 10:30 service and greeted all who followed Dot Brady, who sat in her chair and faithfully prayed for the members of our congregation You probably remember more significant accomplishments of these individuals. But these are the things that I remember. These are the simple activities that caused these sheep to ask, When Lord, did we see Thee hungry and give Thee something to eat or see Thee as a stranger and welcome Thee or see Thee and thirsty, and give Thee something to drink. And they are the ones who heard our LORD answer, When you did it for one of the least of these you did it for ME. (Matthew 25:37-40) The New Year 2013 is just beginning. Who knows what names will be remembers at the end of the year. Take heart in the fact that because of your relationship to Christ Jesus, you are a person of significance. It may not any one big-time activity that has the greatest impact, but rather, it is the little things that you do in Jesus Name. In 2013 seize every opportunity to live for Christ Jesus with your Hearts Hands and Voices. Pastor A. Mark Schudde

Concordia Cares We care so much so that we are even offering a New Class on how and when to show care. It is called, THE CHRISTIAN CAREGIVER. 5 Note from Vicar Harry What a year! 2012 has been an incredible year for our church and God has been so faithful. Hannah and I would like to say thank you to every one of you in the congregation for all you have done for us. For the outpouring of love that we have received in the form of cards and gifts, and from the time you take to invest in our lives and help us during our time here in Conover, we are so grateful to each and every one of you. December was a busy but a wonderful month for us. Between my many duties, some of which include teaching Confirmation, helping out with the lock-in, leading Advent worship services, helping New Hope Missions Church in Mooresville and coaching boys' basketball, I really experienced both the intensity and the blessing of the Christmas season that comes with working in the church. And Hannah truly enjoyed helping out around the church -- attending and helping with lunches and breakfasts, helping decorate the Christmas trees, attending Bible studies, and spending time with God's people here. And looking forward into 2013, we are so excited for all that God has for our church as well as what God will teach us in ministry this year. Once again, thank you, thank you, thank you! We look forward to what God's got for his people here in January. In Christ, Vicar Harry

Sermon Series The word Epiphany means: to Reveal or to Shine a Light onto something. The question is which way is the light is directed? Does it shine toward Jesus, so that we can see HIM better? 7 Constitution and By-law Forums Set As a follow-up to the Congregational Meeting at Conover Station on November 17 regarding the updating of the Constitution and By-laws of Concordia Lutheran Church, a task force was formed to study the documents provided by Dr. Alan Klaas following the meeting. The goal of the task force was to study the documents and to make sure Dr. Klaas had captured the intent of those attending the meeting and to make sure the language is consistent throughout. Those serving on the task force are as follows: Rick Bare, Leslie Brown, Paula Brown, David Hartsoe, David Isenhower, Randy Isenhower, Dan Long, Jim Rice, Sonny Roseman, Pastor Mark Schudde and Gina Sigmon. The task force has reviewed the work of Dr. Klaas and made some minor revisions to the document to fit in with Concordia Congregation and to position us for future service to God and the community with hearts, hands and voices. The task force will mail out copies of the Constitution and By-laws to each household in early January and will hold forums to discuss them on three separate occasions before bringing them to a vote at a special called meeting of the Voter s Assembly. The forums will be held at the following times: Sunday, January 20 at 2:00 pm. Thursday, January 24 at 6:30 pm Sunday, January 27 at 2:00 pm The task force wishes to provide every possible opportunity for discussion prior to holding a special voter s meeting in February. 12 From the Parish Nurse- January 2013 Do you know how to contact the Parish Nurse? You can go to the Concordia Web Page or her at contact her by cell at Can you list five things that a Parish Nurse can do? 1- Check your blood pressure and pulse and discuss ways to prevent or lower your blood pressure. The Parish Nurse may- with your consent, contact your care provider. 2- Make visits to assist you or your family when making medical decisions. This might reassure an individual that their lungs are clear and the body temperature is normal. A phone call to the primary care provider is made while the Parish Nurse is still in the home. This allows the Parish Nurse to report the visit and to advise the patient of the provider s recommendations. 3- The Parish Nurse may be able to supply supplies and equipment that have been donated. These items are either new or in very good condition. A list of these will be posted on the bulletin board near Vicar Harry s office. 4- Provide medical information-translation. Sometimes health care providers forget and use medical terms that most non-medical individuals do not know. 5- Speak or ask another medical professional to present programs that a group would like to better understand- an example of a topic could be about the importance of foot care for the diabetic. There are many other ways that a Parish Nurse can help a congregation. Watch the Health + Wellness bulletin board for more information- including exercise classes for the upcoming year and updates on the influenza (flu) and what you can do to protect yourself and your loved ones. I welcome your calls and will do my best to help you navigate the ever changing Health Care System. Love from your sister in Christ- Debbie Jones, RN, BSN

Outreach and Mission Projects This Holiday Season F.A.S.T. Track The Fast Track girls took food, sang carols, and thanked the Conover Fire Fighters for their service to the community. The girls also donated food that was given to the Newton-Conover Middle School. The donation will help students that would normally be included in the Back Pack Program, but since the program is not at the middle school level they do not get any help. Season of Giving Concordia asked our parents to help give two boys that live with their 71 year old great aunt on Social Security, bikes for Christmas. There was such an outpouring of help that Adria Morrow is able to help a second family (from ECCCM) and with faculty assistance we were able to also help a third family with 5 children. What a blessing to give out of love to other people. Our offering at the K-4 th Grade Christmas Program totaled $ These funds will be given to the Corner Table in support of their ministry to the community. Our Preschool, Kindergarten and Second Grade students donated baby items to the Pregnancy Care Center to help with the local needs. Classes Helping Our Community The Kindergarten and First Grade made Christmas tree ornaments for Concordia s Senior Citizens Luncheon. One Sunday after the luncheon, many that attended made a point to tell the teachers how much they appreciated them. The Kindergarten class received two cards of thanks. One card even had pictures that were taken with the seniors with big smiles holding the ornaments. It was a heartwarming time for both young and old. The second graders went to the Corner Table to sing carols and help prepare sack lunches during the holiday season. The Concordia Junior Beta Club racked leaves for elderly people as a service project this year. This is just another way for our Middle School students to get out and help in our community. Concordia has partners with the Meals on Wheels to create gifts to include with the meals. Each class takes one month to create a special gift. Our fourth grade class had Thanksgiving, seventh grade had the Fall Season, and Kindergarten had Christmas.

Belize Mission The seventh graders collected money to help pay for the shipping of Reading Books to Belize. We sent 15 suitcases of books to two schools in Belize. One of these schools had three textbooks for the entire school before they arrived. That is a total of three textbooks for all the classes. The teachers couldn t believe that our group was leaving the books with them. We had just the right number of suitcases and money to make it happen. This was certainly a God directed project. Samaritans Purse On November 15 th we packed 220 shoeboxes and on November 26 th the 8 th graders went to Charlotte to work at the Samaritans Purse Operation Christmas Child headquarters. The 1 st graders went to Boone to see how the processing of the shoeboxes took place. Our chapel offerings for November and December also support this ministry. We have collected $1, in mission offerings for Samaritan s Purse. Did you know that some countries won t let Christian material be included in the shoeboxes, but God s Word is spread by the Christians that are handing them out to the children. In some places Christian churches have been started through this ministry. American Heart Association We collected over $7,500 for the American Heart Association through our Hoops for Heart fundraiser. This is unbelievable!!! This was more money than any other school of our size in North Carolina. CONCORDIA SPELLING BEE Jarett Story was the winner of the Concordia Middle School Spelling Bee. After five rounds the field was narrowed to Jarett and Wesley Marlow. These two spellers competed round after round. Jarett will represent Concordia at the Catawba Non-public School Spelling Bee. The winner of that contest advances to the Charlotte Observer Spelling Bee. CHRISTMAS PROGRAMS Our students presented three different Christmas programs in December, all telling of the Savior s birth. We are thankful for the opportunity to share the Christmas story with so many people. Our children s choirs did a great job singing many songs in two or three part harmony. To God be the glory!
