2 FROM THE PASTOR WAIT! 27 Why do you say, "My way is hidden from the LORD, and my right is disregarded by my God"? 28 Have you not known? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. 29 He gives power to the faint, and strengthens the powerless. 30 Even youths will faint and be weary, and the young will fall exhausted; 31 but those who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint. - Isaiah 40 Wait is hardly a word we expect to hear at the beginning of the year. It isn t a word you want to hear after waiting for another pastor to serve among you. And Advent is a time for the coming of Jesus, and we were observing a season of waiting for Christ coming again. Let s get going! is more what I want to hear. Slow down was anathema to me as a child. I didn t want to wait until I was taught in a monastery outside of San Antonio that waiting on the Lord is not so much a time (chronos) thing, but more about discernment. Discernment purposeful listening for God s will, God s way. When we wait for the Lord, we will renew our strength we will run and not be weary we will walk and not faint. 6 Don Jose Night Brotherhood Game Night January 11th Game Night is Friday, January 11th at 6:00 p.m. in the fellowship hall. Bring a guest and a pot luck for the meal at 6 p.m. Our favorite games are pitch, 42 and chicken foot! We have been having a good turn out. It's time to gather with your fellow Advent friends at Don José Mexican Restaurant (on Antoine at Pinemont.) Invite your friends and join us on Monday, January 7th, at 6 p.m. for a great meal, some laughs, and door prizes! (Feel free to arrive before or after 6 p.m.) At our last evening, members and their friends and families enjoyed wonderful fellowship, a great meal and a few "adult beverages." Since February 2017 our meals have earned about $ 1,200 for Outreach ministries, courtesy of Don Jose's 15% church give-back program. Last month we sent $500 to Lutheran Disaster Relief to support recovery from the California wildfires. We have "tickets" available in the narthex and also the Advent Life center that you turn in with your dinner check. (Don't worry, if you forget yours, we'll have some available that night.) 7 Quilting Just a note to remind the "Piece Corp" (quilt group) that we will begin quilting again on Monday, January 21st. It has been nice to have a break to take care of our holiday extras. To date we have 79 finished quilts for LWR. We have January, February and March and part of April to quilt before we ship the quilts to the LWR warehouse. We know the quilters are eager to gather again for good fellowship and quilting. We have a lady from another congregation plus a former member that quilts with Advent. We thank the congregation for their monetary donations and also gifts of batting and fabric for this important ministry. This ministry could not continue without your generosity and love. Thank you so much.
