4 Reflections: What is Adoration? We advertise in the bulletin that He is really there! and all are welcome to come to church every Wednesday between 3:00pm and 9:00pm to sit and spend some time with the Blessed Sacrament. But what does all that mean? What are people doing just sitting in silence in church for a half hour or a few minutes when there is no Mass going on? Great questions! Somewhere in our distant memories we know we have heard this term, and we know it must be something very important, but we just can t recall what exactly it is. It s one of those things that if we had to we could use it in a sentence properly, but we couldn t recite a definition for it. Most of us probably remember our parents or grandparents spending time with the Blessed Sacrament on Holy Thursday evening, or maybe you even tagged along (willingly, or not ). But somewhere along the way, Adoration seemed to fade away. Churches started locking their doors at night for safety reasons, and eventually Adoration only took place during Holy Week. Thankfully, in recent years we have seen a resurgence in honoring the Blessed Sacrament. Many Catholic youth gatherings have taken the lead from The Holy Father s World Youth Day meetings and have been including time for Adoration. The parish where I grew up has a weekly St. Anthony Novena and they have started having Adoration after the Novenas every Tuesday night. So, what IS Adoration, anyway? During Eucharistic Adoration we are spending time with the presence of the Lord. Literally. As we advertise in the bulletin, He really IS THERE, and here s how: during the Consecration at Mass, the bread and wine are transformed literally and substantially, into the body and blood of Christ. I know, but it looks like a wafer of bread, right? It sure does, I agree. But, and here s the good part, it actually IS the Body and Blood of Christ. It s true! Take the words transformed and substantial from Consecration and you have transubstantiated. So, what we have is the Eucharistic Presence of the Lord. Take a moment to let that sink in. Jesus is physically present in the Eucharist. Christ instituted this Holy Sacrament of the Eucharist in order to remain with mankind until the end of time (John, 14:18) Kind of makes sense now why we remain silent and reverent during Adoration or Honoring of the Blessed Sacrament. We are in the presence of the Jesus in Blessed Sacrament being displayed in the monstrance (the vessel the priest places the Holy Eucharist in after he removes it from the tabernacle) on the altar. The Lord is truly there with us. It s an amazing and almost incomprehensible experience. How can we stay away? Once we truly understand what Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is, how can we stay away? One would think that the church would be packed standing room only for the chance to spend an hour with Jesus. We invite you to experience His presence. Bring your children. Don t worry about them making noise, they might. It s OK. Others may sneeze or cough, we re human. But if you start off with just 10 minutes, and bring a child s picture book Bible, or other age appropriate reading materials for your children, they will get it too. When you tell them they are about to spend some time with Jesus in the Sacrament that He created so that He could truly be with us they will get it. If you have children who have not yet received 1st Communion, this is a way for you to satisfy their longing to be like the older kids who receive communion at Mass while they have to settle for a blessing. Jesus is present for ALL of us, we just have to respond to the invitation. Please accept our invitation to come to Adoration, Wednesdays from 3:00pm to 9:00pm. Attend every week or just when you can, but do try to attend. It truly is something to behold. We re pretty excited that our new Audio/Visual Ministry here at St. Patrick s are streaming one Mass a week live for our parishioners who are unable to be present for our weekend Masses. We are in need of at least two people each weekend to run the audio and visual equipment so please inquire if you can help. Don t Forget...St. Patrick s John 21 Community Breakfast ministry provides a free, nutritious breakfast every Saturday morning in the spirit of community fellowship and hospitality from 810 AM for those in need in St. Patrick s Parish Center. We are always in need of funding for this important outreach ministry. If you would like to donate in someone s name or in any way to this valuable ministry, please call Shelly at the parish office, The monthly meeting of the Mumford Council #365, will be held this Monday, January 16th at Mumford Hall. There will be a premeeting meal at 6:15 PM, followed by the meeting at 7:00 PM. (Jn 6:35) Consider coming and sitting a while with the blessed sacrament on Wednesdays anytime between 3:00 PM 9:00 PM Each hour I spend with Jesus will deepen his divine peace in my heart.
