2 ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ THE PASTOR S COLUMN FROM SAINT JOSEPH TO SAINT MICHAEL Last weekend, Father Robert Gajewski, who has been with our parish for the past three and a half years, announced that he had received a new assignment from the Archbishop. I received the following letter from the Archbishop this past Monday, January 10, Archdiocese of Newark Office of the Archbishop January 5, 2011 Dear Father Iwanowski Greetings in the Lord! I write to inform you that I have appointed Reverend Robert S. Gajewski, Parochial Vicar of the Parish of St. Michael, Cranford, effective January 19, I pray that God may continue to bless you, and all the members of St. Joseph Parish. With kindness personal regards, I am Sincerely in the Lord, Saint Michael Parish is located in Union County. Or to put in "New Jersey terms" it is off of Exit 137 of the Garden State Parkway. We might say Father Robert is being transferred from Exit 165 to Exit 137. We thank Father Robert for his service to the people of Saint Joseph Parish and we wish him well in his new assignment. May his ministry to the people of Saint Michael Parish help them to grow closer to Christ and his Church. We invite you to join us in thanking Father Robert and in wishing him well by joining us for an informal reception today, Sunday, January 16, at 1 pm in the cafeteria of the Upper School located on Grand Street. The reception will follow our Noon Mass that will be celebrated by Father Robert. Please feel free to stop by the reception anytime between 1 and 2 pm. If you wish to drop a note to Father Robert his new address will be Rev. Robert Gajewski St. Michael's Church 40 Alden Street, Cranford, New Jersey BAPTISM AT MASS Last Sunday, January 9, I was privilege to celebrate the + Most Reverend John J. Myers Archbishop of Newark When a man is ordained a priest he promises to serve the people of the Archdiocese of Newark in any parish to which he is assigned by the Archbishop. That promise can take a priest to any of the more than 220 parishes located in Bergen, Union, Essex and Hudson Counties, the four counties that make up the Archdiocese of Newark. That promise brought Father Robert to Saint Joseph Parish in July of 2007 and now it takes him to Saint Michael Parish in Cranford, NJ. Sacrament of Baptism during our 10:30 am Mass in the upper church. Deanna Nicole Frassa, the seven year old daughter to Patricia and Robert Frassa was baptized and became the newest member of the Catholic Church here at our parish. It was a perfect Sunday to celebrate the sacrament since it was the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. Witnessing Deanna's baptism gave all of us an opportunity to reflect on the meaning of that sacrament in our own lives. Through the waters of baptism God claimed us as his beloved sons and daughters and made us part of His Church. Love, Father Tom Iwanowski 2

4 JANUARY 16, 2011 Liturgical Ministry GOOD TO KNOW Ordinary Time The term "Ordinary Time" may be misleading. In the context of the liturgical year the term "ordinary" does not mean "usual or average." Ordinary here means "not seasonal." Ordinary Time is that part of the Liturgical Year that lies outside the seasons of Lent-Easter and Advent- Christmas. In Ordinary Time, the Church celebrates the mystery of Christ not in one specific aspect but in all its aspects. The readings during the liturgies of Ordinary Time help to instruct us on how to live out our Christian faith in our daily lives. Ordinary Time in the Church's year occurs in two sections. The first part begins on the Monday following the Christmas season, which ends with the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord on the Sunday following January 6. It lasts through the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the Lenten season. Ordinary Time resumes after the Easter Season, on the Monday after Pentecost, and continues until evening prayer on the Saturday before the First Sunday of Advent. The Sunday that follows the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord is the Second Sunday in Ordinary Time. The remaining Sundays are numbered consecutively up to the Sunday preceding the beginning of Lent. Themes in Prayer and Scripture During the Liturgical Year, the scripture readings for seasons of Lent, Easter, Advent, and Christmas have prominent themes. During Ordinary Time the readings are not chosen according to a theme. Rather, they present in a continuous fashion. the life and work of Jesus Christ as proclaimed in the Gospels of either Matthew, Mark, or Luke. John's Gospel is read principally during the liturgical seasons. The Liturgical Color The liturgical color for Ordinary Time is green, a sign of hope. A Symbol for Ordinary Time The Chi Rho is a Christian symbol that dates from the early Church. It is comprised of the first two letters of the Greek word for Messiah, Christos the letter Chi looks like the letter "X", and the letter Rho looks like the letter "P." This abbreviation became a symbol representing Jesus Christ. William H. Sadlier, Inc PREPARING FOR MASS The readings for next Sunday, January 23, 2011 The Third Sunday in Ordinary Time are: ISAIAH 8:23-9:3: Isaiah announces that God will deliver his people 1 CORINTHIANS 10-13: Paul begs the Corinthians to return to unity in Christ. MATTHEW 4:12-23: After the arrest of John the Baptist, Jesus begins his public ministry. 2 nd Sunday in Ordinary Time Sunday Gospel The next day [John the Baptist] saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world. He is the one of whom I said, 'A man is coming after me who ranks ahead of me because he existed before me.'" Jn 1:29-30 THANK YOU to all the ministers who served last weekend.
