2 THIS AND THAT The St. Denis parish community is a leader in creating a safe environment for children. Several years ago, our Parish Pastoral Council decided that all volunteers in the parish should undergo Virtus training. This training consists of a video presentation with breaks for discussion and comments. The video presents the strategies that child sex abusers use to gain the trust of their victims. The goal is that after this training the participants will be able to identify those behaviors. Being able to do so, they can help to create a safe environment for children. 115 have completed this training. That s a great rate of participation! The Safe Environment Office of the Archdiocese of Chicago requires all parish volunteers who are in regular contact with children or adolescents to read a training article once each month. This is sent to them as and requires a response. Half of our volunteers are required to do the bulletins. The articles have recently spoken of the phenomenon of sexting and privacy problems with social media. Today abusers often groom their targets via the internet. These monthly articles are a continuing education for those who are committed to creating a safe environment for children. For all of that, this monthly training takes on average about five minutes. A reminder about the training is posted on the monthly parish calendar published in this parish bulletin. Most of us who are required to do the bulletins do so as a matter of course. A few of us need to be prompted and prodded to do them. You help create a safe environment for children when you do them. The monthly approach should keep it fresh on your mind. The new information presented can do the same. Please make every effort to complete your monthly bulletin in a timely fashion, without the prompt. With the subject of child abuse in the Church a major part of the news today, it is important to realize that at St. Denis we will not tolerate the 2 sexual abuse of children. Next week, I will tell you about the other procedures adult volunteers and employees are required to do in order to create a safe place for children. We will also take a look at what is being offered to our children in the religious education program on this topic. St. Denis is a leader amongst the parishes of the Archdiocese of Chicago in trying to create a safe environment for children. Thank you for your dedication in helping make this so. St. Denis Food Pantry and Helping Hands Thank You The third week of each month we assemble boxes of food and toiletries for our pantry families and individuals. Because of your kindness and generosity, each family was supplied with a ham and a cake ( a wonderful annual gift from one of our parishioners) and the trimmings for the holiday meal. In addition, your donations of gift cards, food and paper goods provided ample amounts of every day necessities. How thoughtful and good you are! Your gifts brought such happiness and blessings to so many. We only wish you could each have seen the gratitude and smiles of those folks as they picked up their Christmas treats and the staples that well help them through the rest of the month. Your response to our Pantry requests are always overwhelming. Thank you! According to Diocesan policy, preparations are to be made at least 4 months prior to the desired date. SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION: Individual confessions are heard on Saturdays from 3:00 3:45 pm. Reconciliation Services are celebrated during the Lenten and Advent Seasons. Consult the bulletin for specific times and dates.
