RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS PREPARING FOR A NEW TERM REGISTRATION Current Students All of our currently registered students will be receiving registration letters shortly. As we plan for the new term, we ask your cooperation by returning your family/student registration to The Religious Education Office by the published due date of July 31, 2011 New Students New Student Registrations are being accepted. Please call the Religious Education Office at for information and to request a registration packet to be mailed to you. After completing the forms, please return to the Religious Education Office 300 Elm Street, Oradell, NJ Please note: 1 A copy of the student s Baptism Certificate, not their Birth Certificate, is required. 2 In order to receive First Reconciliation and First Eucharist, a student must have attended first grade religion classes. Anyone who is going into the 1 st grade in September of 2011 must register for Religious Education. VOLUNTEERS NEED Volunteers are the heart of the Religious Education Program. Volunteers staff our classrooms and aid in overseeing the school buildings when class is in session. With over 800 students in our program, you can only imagine the number of volunteers it takes to help make this program work. Without our volunteer staff we would not be able to offer our young people a quality program guiding them in the formation of our Catholic Faith. Whether you are the parent of a student or a caring parishioner who enjoys spending time with children, please take a few moments to prayerfully consider the stewardship of giving of your time and talents as a catechist. Remember, as you undertake this task, you are helping to give the Gift of Faith to the young people of our parish. 2 ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ THE PASTOR S COLUMN NO SUMMER VACATION IN OUR SCHOOL BUILDINGS! Summer is a time for vacation from school. Students and teachers take a well deserved rest after ten months of class. Summer may be a quiet time for the students and teachers of our parish school, but our two school buildings are anything but quiet places this summer. The lower school building on Elm Street that houses grades PreK3 through Grade 4, and the upper school on Grand Street that houses Grade 5 through Grade 8 are getting some sorely needed attention. Every piece of furniture has been removed from each room. All the floors have been stripped, thoroughly cleaned, waxed and polished. If fact, visitors have hesitated to walk into classrooms because the floors are shining so brightly they appear to be wet. THE RIGHT COLORS Each room is also being freshly painted. Many classrooms have not seen a coat of paint in years. Our Director of Operations researched the latest thinking in school paint colors and that information is guiding the choice and location of the colors we are using. Each room has a subdued blue, green, or yellow color on the wall where the teacher generally gives instruction. The other three walls are painted an off-white. The placement of color invites attention to the instructional area of the room. The colors used in the classrooms are also carried into the halls. BLACK TO WHITE The blackboards in each room are being replaced with white boards. Blackboards seem to be going the way of the typewriter. The white boards provide a surface where erasable colored markers can be used rather than chalk. In addition to erasable white boards, there are plans to install interactive projectors in nine classrooms. We are currently awaiting the delivery of this new teaching technology. But since this involves government money, that wait may be longer than we expected. DEDICATED SPACE In addition to cleaning and painting classrooms, we are also dedicating certain rooms for particular subjects. There will now be a room for music and art. We have designated a room for use as a library and have relocated the books and shelves that were stored in the basement of the Parish Life Center to that room. You may be aware that the town of Oradell forbade any rooms in the Parish Life Center to be used by the school since the building is not zoned for educational purposes. Furthermore, the Parish Life Center is not up to code for school use. ENHANCING THE ENTRANCE We are also working on improving the look and feel of the entrance area of the lower school. We have removed certain display cases that were in poor condition. This has opened the space and made it more inviting. We hope to place a flat screen monitor in the entrance way of the school to announce school news and events. (This would provide a wonderful opportunity for an alumni or a parish member to make a gift or memorial donation to fund this new improvement. If you are interested in learning more, please contact me, ) Work is also scheduled in the school gym. We plan to remove years of dust from the pipes that run just below the ceiling and also to paint the walls and varnish the wooden trusses. We are also looking into window treatments that will permit more natural light to enter the space. (You can view photos of the work being done in our schools by going to the school website [sjsusa.org] and clicking on Summer Projects 2011) NEW STAFF In addition to physical improvements, we have also strengthened the school staff. We have added a lead teacher to work with our principal in directing the early childhood program for three and four year old children. We plan to name this re-born early childhood learning program THE GREENHOUSE. You will be hearing more about this in the next few weeks. We have also added an educational technology teacher to our staff, a new history teacher, and a vice principal, who working with the principal, will be responsible for grades 5 to 8. INVESTING FOR THE FUTURE We are investing in the building, in equipment, and in teachers in order to provide our students with the best academic and religious education possible. We are also investing so that our school will have a bright future and be an institution that attracts parents interested in providing their children with a superior education, and with a strong grounding in their Catholic Faith, one that will serve them now and guide them in the future. As members of Saint Joseph Parish we should all be proud and supportive of our school. 3 SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME WORKING AWAY! Summer is work time at the two buildings that house Saint Joseph School. See the Pastor's Column for more information. WOMEN'S CORNERSTONE Our third meeting of prayer and preparation for Cornerstone XX will be held this Wednesday evening, July 20, at 8 pm at the K of C Hall on River Road in New Milford. Even if you have to be a little late, there will be a seat waiting for you. If you haven't been able to attend much in the past, we welcome your return! Join us as we pray and plan for Cornerstone XX, come and share the joy of the Blessings of Our Lord! Our meetings each month consist of faith sharing, singing, prayer, laughter and good fellowship. There are also good snacks prepared by our Cornerstone sisters! Plan to join us this Wednesday evening at 8 pm. We look forward to seeing you with us! JUSTFAITH Understanding and Responding to Social Justice Issues through the Lens of Church Teaching Are you involved in any of your parish s social ministry program(s)? Do you ever wish there were some effective ways to go beyond helping those in need by: understanding the root causes of poverty, homelessness, and other forms of social injustice and then finding some effective ways to help form a more just society? JUSTFAITH is a lively and challenging program offered in hundreds of parishes across the country that helps meet those objectives. It involves coming together in small groups for 30 weekly sessions, using a wide variety of formats books, videos, guest speakers, discussion, prayer, and face to face conversation with some of the faceless poor. Interested? JUSTFAITH will be offered at St Peter s Church in River Edge at two separate times on Wednesdays beginning in September. Mornings are 9:15 to 11:15; evenings are 7:30 to 9:30. Two separate Information Sessions will be held at St Peter s on Wednesday July 27, at 9:30 am in the Parish Center and at 7:30 pm in the Rectory Basement. St. Joseph s has a Homebound Ministry. A group of concerned parishioners who have completed a course in ministering to the sick and homebound. They come as ministers in the name of the parish to provide a caring outreach where it is needed. Ministers are trained to bring comfort, prayer and conversation to those who would welcome it. Many of them are also Eucharistic Ministers. If you or someone you know would like to be visited by someone in the Ministry for the Homebound, or desire to receive the Holy Eucharist in your home, please call Helen Higley

4 JULY 17, 2011 LITURGICAL MINISTRY 16 th Sunday in Ordinary Time Sunday Gospel Quotes from the General Instruction of the Roman Missal On November 27, 2011, the English speaking Church in the USA will begin using a new translation of the prayers used at Mass (The Roman Missal). A series of quotes explaining the parts of the Mass from the General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM) will be posted here. These explanations are meant to help the reader participate more fully in the Sunday Mass. What s new or different about the Revised Translation? The style of the translation of the third edition is different. In accord with the rules for translation established by the Holy See, the revised translation follows the style of the original Latin texts more closely, including concrete images, repetition, parallelisms, and rhythm. The English used in the Mass texts is more formal and dignified in style. Where possible, the texts follow the language of Scripture and include many poetic images. In addition, the third edition contains prayers for the celebration of recently canonized saints, additional prefaces for the Eucharistic Prayers, additional Masses and prayers for various needs and intentions, and some updated and revised rubrics (or instructions) for the celebration of the Mass.
