JOURNEY OF FAITH Journey of Faith is an extraordinary new telling of a remarkable story: the story of the Archdiocese of Seattle, our story! With rich-colored illustrations, this history brings our inspiring Catholic story to life, from the days when thousands of Native peoples called this land holy ground, to the first explorers and missionaries, to the building of our churches and schools, to the present day. It s a story of saints and sinners; of natives and newcomers, of missionaries, teachers, and builders, working together to build the church of Western Washington it s a story of spirit and sacrifice for the Glory of God. The graphic novel format makes it appealing to people of all ages. Books will be on sale May 4th weekend. Soft cover $10 and hard cover version $15. Great gift idea!

3 From the Pastor & Liturgy FROM THE PASTOR In the gospel for Easter Sunday, the evangelist tells us that Peter and the disciple whom Jesus loved ran to see the empty tomb (see John 20:1-9). They were so eager to see if what they had hoped for could really be true that Jesus had been raised from the dead just as he had told them on many occasions. Later in the gospel, we are told that the disciples did not yet understand the Scripture that he had to rise from the dead. Even though they hoped in the resurrection, these early disciples still did not understand it all. Many of us today wonder what the resurrection means for us. Is eternal life really our glorious destiny? Dare we believe that just like Jesus, we too will rise from the dead? Can we run and tell others this Good News? Certainly we have many reasons to rejoice on this Easter Sunday good health, loving family, a place to call home, our faith -are only some of the gifts that we have received that convince us of God s love and generosity for us. How can we not be excited about all that is around us? Our parish is glad to welcome guests and visitors who have joined us. If you are looking for a parish to join and/ or are interested in becoming a Catholic, please consider Sacred Heart Parish. May our Risen Lord bless all of you and all your family and friends. FIFTY DAYS OF EASTER The early Church had it right. Fifty days of Easter... fifty days of intensely entering more deeply into the mysteries just celebrated... fifty days of pondering their reality. For the newly baptized, this was the period of mystagogy, literally, to move or go through the mystery, that which has been revealed to us through the Death and Resurrection of Christ. It was a time to go through that which is made possible and real in our own lives through the Sacraments of Initiation, not only in an intellectual sense as something we should know and understand, but deep within our minds and hearts as something we must live. Could we cradle or veteran Catholics not benefit as well by such an experience? The readings for this season will offer us many helps in entering more deeply into the mystery that we are called to live as we make our way through Easter s fifty days. During the Octave, eight days after Easter, our Gospel accounts tell of the appearances of the Risen Lord. Repeatedly, we hear of the simultaneous fear, struggle to believe, and overwhelming joy the Apostles and disciples experienced. They, too, had to enter into the mystery. (2014 Sourcebook for Sundays, Seasons, and Weekdays, p. 169) EASTER SEQUENCE On Easter Sunday, the Easter sequence Victimae paschali laudes is sung after the second reading. This centuriesold hymn is a song of praise of the victorious Lamb of God, the Risen Christ. (2014 Sourcebook for Sundays, Seasons, and Weekdays, p. 170) The hymn will be sung in English. Christians, to the Paschal Victim offer sacrifice and praise. The sheep are ransomed by the Lamb; and Christ, the undefiled, has sinners to his Father reconciled. Death with life contended: combat strangely ended! Life's own Champion, slain, yet lives to reign. Tell us, Mary: say what you did see upon the way. The tomb the Living did enclose; I saw Christ's glory as He rose! The angels there attesting; shroud with grave-clothes resting. Christ, my hope, has risen: He goes before you into Galilee. That Christ is truly risen from the dead we know. Victorious King, Your mercy show! Amen. Alleluia. 4 Faith Formation CONGRATULATIONS It is with great thanksgiving that we at Sacred Heart welcome newly baptized Ramsey Augustine Dow who enters through the sacraments into our faith at the Easter Vigil. Ramsey has prepared and studied for the past year and half with the RCIA process and at the Easter Vigil received the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and First Eucharist. Ramsey was supported and encouraged by his sponsor Lillian Alfaro Kahn, by the RCIA Team and our entire parish community who prayed for and with him during this process. Ramsey chose as his saint confirmation name Augustine. We pray that he, like St. Augustine, will inspire others with his faithfulness to the Church and Jesus the Christ. Ramsey Augustine now enters the post-baptismal period of catechesis which is called mystagogy. This is a time for deepening the Christian experience, especially in appreciation for the sacramental life, for spiritual growth, and for entering more fully into the life and unity of the Catholic community. Let us continue to pray for Ramsey Augustine as we pledge to help him grow and mature in the Christian life and to develop a genuine Catholic world view. QUESTION OF THE WEEK From today s Gospel reading: Adult: "In what ways does my life reflect my belief in the risen Christ? Do I ever talk about it with another person? Does that belief affect my prayer as well? What is my experience of resurrection in my own life or the life of my family? Child: Jesus is with us today. How can you see Him in the people around you in Church? (ww.opsouth.org) BAPTISM PREPARATION Congratulations as you anticipate a new arrival in your household and are thinking about Baptism. Parents attend a preparation session. The next session is on Saturday, May 3, 9:00 to 11 AM in the Parish Conference Room #1. Entrance is through the Parish office main doors on the West side of the building off the upper parking lot. You are encouraged to participate before the arrival of your child. Godparents are welcome to attend. Registration two weeks prior to the session is necessary. For registration and further information, please contact Val Keller at vkeller@sacredheart.org. PARISH FIRST COMMUNION We will celebrate with over 70 of our parish children their First Communion at Masses on the weekends of April 27th and May 19th. April at 5 PM and 11 AM and May at 5 PM, 9 AM and 11 AM. We continue to keep all the children and families in our prayers. THIS MAY BE WHAT YOU ARE SEARCHING FOR! Are you looking for a foundation that will help to provide meaning for your life? Are you looking for an opportunity to know Jesus, the Christian community and the Catholic way of living? If you are a non-baptized person, a person of another Christian denomination interested in learning more about the Catholic Church, a baptized Catholic but never Confirmed and/or celebrated First Eucharist or a Catholic wishing to share their faith with others, then RCIA might be the place for you! The RCIA process offers an opportunity to come together in a small group to discern your personal experience of faith and to learn more about the Catholic Church. Sessions focus on the teachings and experience of the Church and prepare individuals to celebrate the sacraments and be received into the Church. You are welcome to find out more and participate in the process with your questions, your experiences and your faith story in a warm, accepting setting. 5 Administration & Stewardship STEWARDSHIP AND SCRIPTURE This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad! This refrain from Psalm 118 rings throughout the Church on this glorious Easter Sunday. In today s Gospel reading from John the empty tomb is described and emphasized. Although Peter and John, upon inspecting the tomb, saw and believed, it was not the empty tomb that they began to proclaim, it was the Lord s Resurrection. For us as Catholic Christians, this is the hope promised us by Christ. That is the reason for our joy! We are all familiar with the phrase: faith, hope, and love, but the greatest of these is love. That is a formula for being a good steward and, in sharing our love, we fulfill our roles as disciples of Christ. To that formula on this magnificent Easter, we can add Joy. Jesus fully understood the purpose of His life on earth. He endured the Cross for us with that purpose in mind. We each need to seek, find, and carry out the joy-filled purpose for our own lives.
