3 From the Pastor & Liturgy FROM THE PASTOR Discernment Our annual gathering for discernment for new members for our parish councils and commissions will be this coming Thursday, May 10. There are several positions open for new people to join in being parish leaders; there are one, two, and three year terms available. Please take some time this coming week to ask the Holy Spirit to help us choose the right people to serve. If you feel called to participate in the discernment process, please contact Carol Guenther at the Parish Office, and she will let you know what you need to do to participate. Father Michael Wagner We have been praying for Father Michael Wagner, Priest Administrator at Visitation and Holy Rosary parishes in Tacoma, for the past few weeks; he was in the hospital after a serious health issue. Father Michael died on Wednesday morning (May 2). Please remember Father Michael, his family, and the parishes he served in your prayers. Let us continue to work together to build up the Kingdom of God here at Sacred Heart. 4th SOLEMNITY OF THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD NEXT SUNDAY Next Sunday, May 13, is the solemnity of the Ascension which was unknown in the first three and a half centuries. The chronology of dating the Ascension to forty days after Easter exists only in the Acts of the Apostles. In the Gospel according to Luke, the Ascension appears to have take place much earlier, even on Easter Day. The original ending to Mark s account of the Gospel did not include the Ascension at all, and it can only be inferred from Matthew s conclusion. When fourth-century Egeria mentions a celebration forty days after Easter in Bethlehem, it may have been for the Holy Innocents. But by the fifth century the observance seems to be universally accepted. (2018 Sourcebook for Sundays, Seasons, and Weekdays, 198) BLESSING FOR MOTHERS NEXT SUNDAY Next Sunday, May 13, is Mothers Day in our country. There will be a special blessing for all mothers at all the Masses next weekend. MAY CROWNING ON SUNDAY Sunday, May 6, we will celebrate May crowning at the 11 AM Mass. All children in the assembly will be invited to join in the entrance procession. The statue of Mary will be crowned, and we will ask for Mary s intercession during the month of May. FUNERAL MASS ON WEDNESDAY There will be a Funeral Mass for (Romeud) Jorge Pereira on Wednesday, May 9 th at 10 AM with a reception following in the narthex. There will be no 9 AM Mass on Wednesday. There will be confession from 8-8:45 AM as usual. FEAST OF SAINT DAMIEN DE VEUSTER Thursday, May 10, is the memorial of Saint Damien de Veuster. After years of missionary work in the Hawaiian Islands, Damien [ ], a young priest from Belgium, sought to align himself even more with the crucified in society. He requested to be stationed on the island of Moloka i. Outraged by the deplorable conditions on the island, he sought to restore dignity to the lepers and diseased who were sent there to die. Within a short period of time, the sick were living in clean houses instead of caves, and upon death they were given a proper burial rather than being dumped into mass graves. Even though leprosy was highly contagious, he chose to remain in close contact with the people. Damien eventually contracted the disease and died from it. (2018 Sourcebook for Sundays, Seasons, and Weekdays, 199) ANOINTING OF THE SICK ON THURSDAY We will celebrate the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick during the 9 AM Mass on Thursday, May 10. Anyone preparing for surgery, of advanced age, or who is seriously ill may be anointed. Carpe Diem will host a coffee social after Mass. SCHOOL COMING TO MASS ON FRIDAY Our parish school students and staff will participate in the 8:45 AM Mass on Friday, May 11; students from the second grade in our parish school will assist in various roles. The school will also welcome grandparents to the Mass and school on Friday. PRAY-ERS IN MANY LANGUAGES NEEDED We will celebrate Pentecost May 19 and 20. Our tradition at Sacred Heart is to pray Pentecost Mass in a variety of languages. If you speak a language other than English and would like to participate, please call the Parish Office with your name, Mass you will attend, and the language you will pray. Let us raise our many voices in thanksgiving to the Holy Spirit.

4 Pastoral Care & Social Concerns IN CELEBRATION OF LIFE ON MOTHER S DAY God of life and love, today we thank you for mothers. We pray for all mothers and the lives they nurture. Bless them with Your strength, Your Peace, and Your grace. PREPARES of Catholic Community Services is proud to support mothers as companions on the journey. Throughout the Archdiocese of Seattle, PREPARES volunteers accompany nearly 150 mothers and provide over 2,000 items annually so needed by pregnant women and mothers of young children. This year, Sacred Heart Parish is once again participating in Baby Basics Annual Mother s Day Diaper Drive. Diapers will be collected the weekend of MAY 12th/13th Sizes 4, 5, and 6 please! 5 Youth & Young Adult Ministry Sacred Heart Parish Youth Migrant Project August 19-24, 2018 The Youth Migrant Project is a summer long experience that provides current junior high youth (incoming grades 6, 7, 8) a unique opportunity to live in community and be of service to migrant families in the Skagit Valley. Parish youth groups serve for a week at a time throughout June, July and August. Participant jobs include: assisting in the day care centers, working at the Tri-Parish Food Bank, and visiting the migrant camps. A participant s day also includes prayer, community building, chores, and education about the needs of the poor. 6 Administration & Stewardship ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL 2018 COMMITMENT SUNDAYS MAY 6 MAY 13 MAY 20 What is the Annual Catholic Appeal? The Annual Catholic Appeal is our chance to participate in the ministry of the wider Church in Western Washington the Archdiocese of Seattle. The Archdiocese serves 19 counties covering nearly 30,000 square miles, ministering to over 600,000 registered Catholics in 172 parishes and missions. With our pledge to the Annual Catholic Appeal, we help fund over 60 programs and services of the Archdiocese. We work together as a larger Church to accomplish what we cannot do alone as a single parish. What does the Annual Catholic Appeal mean for Sacred Heart Parish? This year, our parish goal for the Annual Catholic Appeal is $213,000. We d like to raise an additional $30,000 over that goal for our Capital Maintenance and Improvement Budget. When we exceed our goal, the overage returns to Sacred Heart in the form of a rebate. Our rebate from the 2017 appeal was almost $40,000. In recent years, we ve used that rebate to accomplish a number of facility improvements. How do we participate? By now you should have received a letter from Archbishop Sartain containing a brochure, pledge card and return envelope. Soon, you will also receive a letter from Fr. Steve with another pledge card and return envelope. Please follow these steps: Complete one of the pledge cards and mail it back right away in one of the return envelopes. Or bring your completed pledge card in the return envelope to Mass during the month of May and place it in the offering basket. Or make a pledge on-line at seattlearchdiocese.org. There s a link on our parish website, sacredheart.org. No matter how you pledge, be sure to indicate that your gift is for Sacred Heart, Bellevue. And don t forget, your pledge can be paid over a ten month period by cash, check, EFT, debit/credit card, or stock. The archdiocese will send reminders. How much should we give? Last year at Sacred Heart, 401 parish households gave an average of $626 to the Annual Catholic Appeal. Our goal this year is to increase the number of parish households that pledge to the appeal. If you have not pledged before, this is the year to start, and we would encourage an initial gift of at least $365 or $1 a day for the ministries of the Catholic Church in Western Washington. However, every pledge, big or small, is gratefully received, deeply appreciated, and vital if we are to make our goal. The important thing is that every household participate. Your gift makes everything possible. We are many parts, we are all One Body and the gifts we have, we are given to share I grew up with this song by Marty Haugen from 1980 and I have spent a lifetime exploring the Godgiven giftedness of human beings. I find our uniqueness fascinating! At the core of Christian stewardship is the belief that God gifts each one of us uniquely with a whole panoply of talents, skills and abilities. And those gifts are given so that we can uniquely contribute to life and society to build up the reign of God on earth. Mature Christian stewards understand their personal responsibility to name their gifts and claim them as God-given, so that they can effectively aim those gifts out into the world to have the most beneficial impact. The parable of the talents should speak to all of us. Here at Sacred Heart Parish, the Stewardship Commission seeks to help all parishioners explore their unique gifts through a simple inventory called Strengthsfinder. All our parish leadership groups are using this tool, as well as adults preparing for Sacraments of Initiation. Our hope is that every parishioner will consider using this assessment to grow as faithful stewards. It is a simple process that begins by contacting me at the parish office to pick up the Inventory. You complete in on-line, which takes ~ 30 minutes and you receive feedback on your top 5 strengths immediately following. Then, we can talk about your results and what unique contribution you can make with your life as a Christian steward. Please contact me to learn more. There are 7 major leadership groups at Sacred Heart which keep our ministries running smoothly: Pastoral Council, Finance Council, School Commission, Worship Commission, Stewardship Commission, Faith Formation Commission and Social Concerns Commission. Each year, leaders rotate off and new members begin a 2-or 3-year term, beginning July 1, New members are chosen by a process of community discernment and all adult parishioners are encouraged to participate in this process.
