Whether our homes are big or small, simple or elaborate, we are reminded by this feast to make room for God and God s blessing on our dwellings and all who live, work or visit us there. The biblical roots of this tradition come from Deuteronomy 6:9 when God instructed the Israelites, who were about to enter the Promised Land: Take to heart these words which I command you today. Keep repeating them to your children. Recite them when you are at home when you lie down and when you get up. Write them on the doorposts of your houses and on your gates. The traditional ritual is to use chalk to write above the home s entrance: 20 + C + M + B The letters C, M, B have two meanings. They are the initials of the traditional names of the three magi: Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar. They also abbreviate the Latin words Christus mansionem benedicat, May Christ bless the house. The + signs represent the cross and 2017 is the year. Chalk is used as an ordinary substance made of common elements of the earth, put to holy use. Chalk will not permanently mark the building and the image will fade from view over time. After a year passes and a new Epiphany arrives, we have the opportunity once again to seek God s blessing on our homes and on those who come and go through its doors. We encourage all families to adopt this simple Epiphany ritual this year. Materials and instructions will be available after all the masses on January 7/8 th. PLEASE PRAY FOR THE SICK Minnie Webb, Tony Joyce, Nicolas Kauser and Louise Melchor (mother of Stephanie McIntyre). THE DECEASED Mary D Ambrosio, Joe Kirk and Pete Cuthbert, (brother of Ann Johnston).

4 From the Pastor & Liturgy FROM THE PASTOR ENJOY CHRISTMAS I hope that everyone will have a wonderful Christmas. Bring your friends and relatives to see our Church all decked out in Christmas finery. SAFE TRAVELS I know that many parishioners will travel to other places for the Christmas holidays. I am praying for your safe travels and hope that you have a wonderful Christmas with family and friends. Remember that our church will be in full Christmas attire until January 10, so you will be able to see it when you return. Let us continue to work together to build up the Kingdom of God here at Sacred Heart. GIFT OF LITURGICAL MINISTRY During this time of year, we often turn our thoughts to gifts: gifts that we give and gifts that we receive. As Catholics, we receive incredible gifts from God when we participate in Mass and other sacramental celebrations. Perhaps you might want to give a gift in return by serving as a liturgical minister at Sacred Heart. Parishioners serve as readers, altar servers, sacristans, ushers, greeters, and Eucharistic ministers. Our goal is that liturgical ministers would only have to serve at one weekend Mass per month in these ministries so that many people can serve. There will be training for these ministries during the week of January 9. Call or the Parish Office with your name and phone number, and someone will contact you for training. Come join one of our parish s choirs and give the gift of your voice and musical talents. The Sacred Heart Chorale and the Sacred Heart Children s Choir (6 years and older) are always welcoming new members. We are also looking for cantors and people who can play a musical instrument. No audition is required; just come with a willing heart to offer your gift to Sacred Heart. Contact Theresa Galvez, Pastoral Assistant for Liturgical Music at tgalvez@sacredheart.org or , ext 106. PENANCE AND RECONCILIATION Individual confessions are available on Saturday from 3-4:30 PM and on Wednesday from 8-8:45 AM. This sacrament takes place in the Reconciliation Chapel in the northeast corner of the narthex. MARRIAGE PLANS? If you are planning on getting married at Sacred Heart or if you are a Sacred Heart parishioner planning on getting married at another parish, contact the Parish Office at least six months before your planned wedding date. FEAST OF THE HOLY FAMILY OF JESUS, MARY, AND JOSEPH This liturgical feast has been on the Church s calendar for about one hundred years, often on different dates. It is a devotional or idea feast that was inaugurated by Holy Family associations. Everything we know about the Holy Family, which is not much, comes from the Gospel accounts read over the three years. It celebrates the unity and love so evident in the family of Joseph, Mary, and Jesus. (2016 Sourcebook for Sundays, Seasons, and Weekdays, 41) We will celebrate this feast on Friday, December 30. Take some time to pray for your family as well as for all families on Friday. SOLEMNITY OF MARY, THE HOLY MOTHER OF GOD As we continue our celebration of the Christmas season, we celebrate the solemnity of Mary, Mother of God on January 1. One of the most outstanding characteristics of Mary is her willingness to know and to do God s will. While we would like to follow her example, we wonder how she was so sure of it. She reflected on events that happened and were happening. She meditated. In our busy lives today, we often overlook meditation as a prayer. (2017 Sourcebook for Sundays, Seasons, and Weekdays, 47) Perhaps a New Year's resolution might be to spend some time each day meditating on what God is inviting us to be and ask God s help to accomplish it. We will have our regular schedule next weekend ~ Vigil Mass at 5 pm on December 31 and Mass on January 1 at 8:30 AM and 11:00 AM to celebrate this great solemnity of Mary and to pray that this New Year will be filled with grace and blessings. SOLEMNITY OF THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD On Sunday, January 8 (and at the 5 PM Vigil Mass on Saturday, January 7), we observe Epiphany as we celebrate that the child born in the darkness of night in a lowly manger is revealed as the manifestation [the meaning of epiphany] of God. Christ is revealed in many ways: as Lord, as King, as the one in whom God is present and acts. All of these manifestations are lights that shine on Christ, revealing a deeper understanding of who he is. Traditionally, three events in the life of Christ are remembered today as manifestations of God s presence and action through Christ: the visit of the Magi, the wedding feast of Cana, and the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River. (2017 Sourcebook for Sundays, Seasons, and Weekdays, 51) We will have our regular Sunday schedule for the observance of Epiphany.

5 Christmas 2016 Dear Friends in Christ, One of my cherished memories of 2016 was our Jubilee Year of Mercy Pilgrimage to Rome. We visited many beautiful churches, ate some great food, spent hours in prayer, and one of the highlights for many of our parish pilgrims was seeing Pope Francis in person (along with 40,000 other pilgrims) in St. Peter s Square. One special memory for me was one day when some parishioners and I went looking for a new nativity set for our parish (our old nativity set made out of plaster of paris was well-used and becoming harder and harder to repair) as a special remembrance of the Year of Mercy. We found a beautiful set which we purchased and are using this year for the first time. It is a beautiful hand-carved and hand-painted set which was made in Italy. Reflecting on our new nativity set, I thought how much our celebration of Christmas is like a new nativity set each year. We know the story and we know those who are involved, yet this year once again we celebrate the birth of Jesus. We have changed since last Christmas and once again we are on the verge of welcoming a new year and all it holds in store for us. Jesus is looking for a home in our hearts once again. Can we welcome him into our home this year for Christmas? Our parish would like to welcome everyone who has come to be with us at Christmas: those who are here at Sacred Heart for the first time, those who are looking to join a faith community of committed disciples of Jesus, those who are family members and relatives of parishioners, and those who are home from college or another part of the country. Please know that you are always welcome to come and pray with us here at Sacred Heart. We are a welcoming community who enjoys being together and seeing new people join us. If you would like to join our parish, please call the Parish Office and someone will assist you in registering. The staff of our Parish and our Parish School join with me in wishing you and all your loved ones and friends a holy and blessed Christmas. Please let us know if there is anything we can do to help you during the days ahead. May the New Year bring you much happiness. In the peace of Christ, Father Steve Sallis Pastor

To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit." (1 Cor 12: 4-7) These words of St. Paul are still true today. The Catholic Church provides the compassion of Christ in countless ways in the United States, including through health care institutions, schools and universities, charities and social service agencies and the work of individuals, parish communities and diocesan entities. To discover how you can become involved with local efforts, look up your local diocesan web site or find a nearby parish. Prayer for Comfort Taken from the USCCB website Almighty God, you are the unfailing refuge of those who suffer. Please bring peace and comfort to the sick and the infirm. Give all those who look after them knowledge, patience, and compassion. Inspire them with actions which will bring relief; words which will enlighten; and love which will bring comfort. We ask this through your son, Jesus Christ. Amen. We would like to say thank you so much for the amazing food you provided, your presence, opening both the doors of your congregations and your hearts to come along side the men we serve. Thank you for returning to the parish, the poor and other charities a part of the many gifts God has bestowed on you. May God bless you in the new year. Year-end Giving, a Planned Gift Successful people are often asked how they thrive. What did they do differently than others? One of the secrets they share is the importance of practicing good stewardship. As stewards of the many gifts God has given us, we can give wisely to support the mission of the Catholic Church in Western Washington. When many people think of charitable giving, especially at year s end, they think of making a cash gift. However, there is another way. It s call a planned gift. There are many ways a planned gift can bring benefits back to you while also benefitting your parish community: A charitable gift annuity that pays you fixed income for life at a rate based on your age; A gift of real estate that offers tax and income advantages; and A gift of stock that helps you avoid capital gains tax. Many of these benefits can be achieved with a surprisingly modest gift. There are variations on each of these gift options. The Archdiocesan Planned Giving Office is pleased to provide information to you and your advisors as you consider making year-end gifts. You may reach the Planned Giving Office at or toll free or via at plannedgiving@seattlearch.org. You are also welcome to visit their website at Annual Catholic Appeal Year-End Payments and Donations Want to make your Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA) payment or donation by year-end for tax purposes?
