3 From the Pastor & Liturgy FROM THE PASTOR Transition at Sacred Heart Some people have asked why Deacon Sam Basta will be the Pastoral Coordinator and Father John Madigan will be the Parish Priest, and why Sacred Heart is not simply getting a new pastor. Since I had asked Archbishop Sartain about moving into senior status after the new pastoral assignments had already been decided, Archbishop Sartain felt that having Deacon Sam and Father John share the pastoral and priestly responsibilities for Sacred Heart would be the best way to go. Archbishop Sartain also said that this arrangement would only be one year, and that next year he and the Priest Placement Board will choose someone to be the next pastoral leader at Sacred Heart (who would begin in July 2019) since there will be more options to consider at that time. This past week Chancery staff met with our Parish staff and our Parish transition team to outline the next few weeks. The Parish Transition team members are: Emy Morris, Jeanne Sutherland, Mary Dickins, Mary Ciaramello, Matt Griffith, Renata Lampkin, Sean Cronkite, and Tracey Russell. Please keep our parish in your prayers during these days of change. Summer and Mass As we transition into summer, I hope all of you will enjoy this wonderful and less scheduled (?) time of the year. I want to encourage all of you to continue to participate in Sunday Mass (or the anticipated or vigil Mass on Saturday). If you will travel during this time, consult masstimes.org to find a parish where you will be able to participate in Mass while you are away. Let us continue to work together to build up the Kingdom of God here at Sacred Heart. the relics will be from 1 LAUREAT M LOST AND FOUND ITEMS There is a table in the narthex, near the Reconciliation Chapel, with items that were left in the church during recent weeks. Please check the table to see if anything belongs to you. On June 18, anything left on the table will be donated to a local thrift store. FLOWER DONATIONS Patty White, Susana Quiroga, Renata Lampkin, Lilia and Michael McCannel, Viki Cunningham, Stephanie McIntyre, and Joyce Mitchell donated flowers last weekend for the outside altars for the Eucharistic procession after Mass. Flowers this weekend were donated in observance of this year s 8th grade graduates of our parish school by the graduates parents. FATHERS BLESSING There will be a special blessing for fathers at all three Masses next weekend as we celebrate Father s Day. THE MOST SACRED HEART OF JESUS This weekend, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, the patron of our parish. Since this is our patronal feast, we transferred the feast from Friday, June 8, to the weekend. The readings are the readings for the Sacred Heart (not for the Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time). There are Sacred Heart holy cards at the Sacred Heart statue for those who want to take one. Let us ask the Sacred Heart to watch over our parish especially in this time of transition. MEMORIAL OF SAINT BARNABAS Monday, June 11, is the memorial of Saint Barnabas. Even though St. Barnabas [first century] was not one of the original Twelve Apostles, he was given the title of apostle by St. Luke and the early Church fathers due to his apostolic endeavors on behalf of Christianity. His original name was Joseph, but the Apostles gave him the surname Barnabas, meaning son of encouragement. Together with St. Paul, he extended the missionary efforts of the Church beyond Jerusalem to Antioch, and after much success moved on to other places throughout Asia Minor. After parting ways with St. Paul over issues regarding circumcision and the Mosaic law, St. Barnabas embarked on further missionary journeys with John and Mark [see Acts of the Apostles 15:36-40]. (2018 Sourcebook for Sundays, Seasons, and Weekdays, 234) LAST MASS OF THE SCHOOL YEAR The last day of school is Thursday, June 14. The students and staff from our parish school will participate in Mass at 9 AM. After Mass, there will be recognition of staff who are leaving and a traditional stepping up of 7th graders to become the leaders in the school. FUNERAL MASS ON FRIDAY There will be a Funeral Mass for Anthony Wang (father of parishioner Bob Wang) on Friday, June 15, at 9 AM.

Please bring to the parish office. BABY BASICS BELLEVUE We are grateful for Sacred Heart s participation again this year in our annual May Diaper Drive. This year the Sacred Heart community collected 1,276 diapers, which will cover 7 babies for a month. A supply of clean diapers, a basic need for a baby, goes a long way in bringing healthy change to a baby and family. Families in our program report how receiving diapers helps their baby stay healthier and happier and helps relieve some of the monthly financial stress around paying for necessities, like diapers, food, and shelter. The gift of diapers is far reaching. It is a blessing to partner with Sacred Heart to help some of the most vulnerable members of our community. Thank you so much! A SPECIAL INVITATION FROM FR. MARLIN J. CONNOLE On May 18, 1968 I had the great joy and privilege of being ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Seattle. Being ordained a priest for 50 years has been a constant source of joy and I am so grateful for the opportunity to serve God s people. I will be offering a Eucharist of Thanksgiving at Sacred Heart Church in Bellevue for these 50 years of ministry, on June 24th at 2pm. Shades of Praise Choir will provide the music and a reception will follow. It is my hope that you can join me on this day and celebrate with me at this Thanksgiving Eucharist. God Bless you all, Fr. 5 Youth & Young Adult Ministry Tijuana Mission Trip July 29-August 4 Hosted by Esperanza International, High Schoolers are invited to spend a week building homes and participating in a variety of spiritual and cultural events. 6 Administration & Stewardship Four in One: Four Projects. One Parish / June 10, 2018 Four in One is the theme of our upcoming capital campaign to address four urgent church maintenance projects: 1. Church Roof 2. Church Ceiling 3. Church Lighting 4. Bell Tower Cladding The idea of Four in One stems from the concept that completion of these four individual projects will benefit, improve, and strengthen our one parish community. Further, the four projects are very much related. The leaking church roof has damaged the church ceiling. While working on the church ceiling, it makes sense to improve the church lighting. The water-related issues in the church tie to the need to prevent further water damage to the bell tower. Together these are four projects in one, unified parish effort. The first of seven campaign receptions was held on Thursday, May 31 st. The reception was hosted by Jon and Sarah Webster, led by Fr. Steve, Tom Bartell and Blaise Goudy, and attended by about 50 parishioners. The remaining campaign receptions will occur this coming September and October, The purpose of the receptions are to gather as a parish family, pray for our parish community as we proceed, share detailed information about the four projects, and request financial and volunteer support for our campaign. This early reception was also the initial launching point for three key campaign volunteer teams: 1. Publicity 2. Phone Calls 3. Hospitality These teams will meet over the summer to work with our consultant, Kris Wallace, to prepare for the fall campaign. Every parish and school family will be invited to participate in the campaign and asked to attend one of the upcoming receptions. The May 31 st

7 Faith Formation Congratulations to Ben Cartmell, Robert and Grayson Messmer and Roman and Charlotte Walbrun who celebrate the Rite of Acceptance this Sunday at the 8:30am Mass. They are now formally Catechumens, on their way to celebrating the Sacraments of Initiation next Easter. Our next Preparation Class for Infant Baptism will be held THIS SUNDAY, June 10th at 12:15pm in the Parish Office Conference Room. Please enter off the upper parking lot entrance. It is with much disappointment that we have made the decision to cancel Vacation Bible Camp for this year. Our goal was to enroll 25 paying campers. As of the deadline on May 31th, we had only 8 registrations, far short of a critical number to make it a wonderful experience for our children.
