2 FROM THE DESK OF THE PASTOR Dear Friends in Christ, As we enter into Holy Week today, let us resolve to walk with Jesus step by step and remember all God has done for us through his Son. Let us reflect upon these words of a Homily given by Pope Benedict: Dear brothers and sisters, may these days call forth two sentiments in particular: praise, after the example of those who welcomed Jesus into Jerusalem with their Hosanna! ; and thanksgiving, because in this Holy Week the Lord Jesus will renew the greatest gift we could possibly imagine - he will give us his life, his body, his blood and his love. But, we must respond worthily to so great a gift, that is to say, with the gift of ourselves, our time, our prayer, our entering into a profound communion of love with Christ who suffered, died and rose for us. The early Church Fathers saw a symbol of all this in the gesture of the people who followed Jesus on his entry into Jerusalem, the gesture of spreading out their coats before the Lord. Before Christ the Fathers said we must spread out our lives, ourselves, in an attitude of gratitude and adoration. As we conclude, let us listen once again to the words of one of the early Fathers, Saint Andrew, Bishop of Crete: So it is ourselves that we must spread under Christ s feet, not coats or lifeless branches or shoots of trees, matter which wastes away and delights the eye only for a few brief hours. But we have clothed ourselves with Christ s grace, or with the whole Christ... so let us spread ourselves like coats under his feet... let us offer not palm branches but the prizes of victory to the conqueror of death. Today let us too give voice with the children to that sacred chant, as we wave the spiritual branches of our soul: Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, the King of Israel. Amen! POPE BENEDICT My prayer for us all this week is that our celebration of the Triduum may help us grow in Faith, Hope and Love! May God bless you and your families always! Fr. Johnson -2-

4 SOCIAL JUSTICE PASSION OF JESUS The word passion comes from the Latin, passio, meaning passiveness, non -activity, absorbing something more than doing anything. The Passion of Jesus refers to that time in his life where his meaning for us is not defined by what he was doing but rather by what was being done to him. For most of his public ministry he was a doer, in command, the active one, teaching, healing, performing miracles, eating with sinners. From the time he walked out of the last supper room and began to pray in Gethsemane, the activity stopped. Jesus is the one having things done to him. In the garden, they arrest him, bind his hands, lead him to Pilate. He is beaten, humiliated, stripped of his clothes and nailed to a cross where he dies. The cross teaches us that we, like Jesus, give as much to others in our passivities as in our activities. When we are no longer in charge, beaten down by whatever, humiliated, suffering, and unable to even make ourselves understood by our loved ones, we are undergoing our passion, and like Jesus in his passion, have in that opportunity to give our love and ourselves to others in a very deep way. DIGNITY OF WORK AND RIGHTS OF WORKERS Catholic Social Teaching Work is an essential responsibility which shapes and fulfills human dignity by providing for the needs of one s self and one s family. Work belongs to the vocation of every person. Work is an essential means by which the good of the earth and the creative capacities of human beings are engaged to provide for human flourishing and the common good. Human work is the fulfillment of human dignity by engaging in and cooperating with the creative work of God. SATISFY OUR HUNGER: PRAYER FOR HOLY THURSDAY God, You who generously give to all your creatures, Satisfy our thirst and hunger Not for wine and bread alone But for love, truth, justice and peace. Through your gift of the Eucharist. Jesus, in the breaking of the bread in the Eucharist, We remember your suffering And we acknowledge the hungers Of so many in this world. Through our sharing in the Bread of Life, Open our hearts to the needs of all. May this Bread become the bread of hope, Of peace, of abundance for everyone in the global village. Holy Spirit, may the Blood of Christ we share Renew us and energize us to be true communities Of light amid the darkness of the structures Of sin and injustice in the world today. Christ s sacrifice gives us new life and nourishes Our souls so we can hear and respond to your discerning call. As we are called to the table of the Eucharist, Let us in turn call our brothers and sisters To the table where we can all share the resources of Creation, Where Justice and Peace reign, And where Love transforms human souls and earthly structures So life and goodness can flourish. Amen. ~Education for Justice BASIC NEEDS KITS AND PANTRY PACKS All Items need to be returned to the church or Parish Office by April
