3 From the Pastor & Liturgy FROM THE PASTOR LENTEN RESOLUTIONS -It is customary for Catholics to have a Lenten resolution to help observe this holy season. Remember that the resolution is not morally binding but should be adopted in the right spirit in hoping to accomplish it by the end of Lent. Some people choose extra times to pray, or give up something (like gossip or fatty foods), or work on a particular area for improvement. Please take some time in the next few days to consider what you will do for your Lenten resolution to help you draw closer to Jesus. HEARTS ON FIRE UPDATE Our pastoral plan, Hearts on Fire, began in September. Since then many things have already been accomplished that the plan called for including: implementation of a Parish Life Committee, 40 new liturgical ministers received training and began their ministry, our parish Sunday 5 PM Youth Mass began, and an implementation team was put into place to oversee the development and assessment of our plan. Our Pastoral Council is formulating their first report to the parish on Hearts on Fire as we have completed the first six months. The report will be issued soon. Let us continue to work together to build up the Kingdom of God here at Sacred Heart. THURSDAY MASS WITH ANOINTING OF THE SICK Thursday, February 11, the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, is the World Day of the Sick. Pope John Paul II initiated the day in 1992 to encourage people to pray for those who suffer from illness and for their caregivers. The Pope himself had been diagnosed with Parkinson s a year before, in 1991, and it is considered that his own illness was impetus for his designation of the day. World Day of the Sick was first observed on February 11, We will celebrate the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick on Thursday, February 11, at the 9 AM Mass. Anyone who is preparing for surgery, is seriously ill, or is of advanced age is invited to be anointed at the Mass. Please take some time on Thursday to pray for all the sick that they will experience the mercy of God. RITE OF SENDING As we begin Lent, it is a special season for our catechumens (the unbaptized who are preparing for baptism at Easter) and for our candidates for full communion. On Sunday, February 7, at the 9 AM Mass we will celebrate the Rite of Sending of Catechumens to Archbishop Sartain who will elect (choose) them to receive the sacraments at Easter this year. LENT BEGINS ON WEDNESDAY Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, February 10. Ash Wednesday is not a holyday of obligation, but many Catholics will make the choice to begin Lent by participating in a liturgy on that day. We will have Mass with Distribution of Ashes at 9 AM and 7 PM and Liturgy of the Word with Distribution of Ashes at 6:30 AM and 12:15 PM. One of the most compelling aspects of Evangelii gaudium is the fact that in nit, the Holy Father is speaking to all the faithful men and women, young people and elders, lay and ordained. He is particularly sensitized to the challenges facing the laity as they try to live their faith and carry the hope and love of the Gospel to those who have yet to encounter it fully. Lent, traditionally a season of introspection and preparation, is an ideal time to consider the challenges presented by Pope Francis in this important letter. He recognizes that the message of Christ can only be borne to the world effectively if we first recognize the challenges that the present day presents. He also calls us to look at the crises faced by families, and the cultures in which they reside. He asks each of us to see the poor with new eyes and to act powerfully on their behalf. He asks us to transform our cities and the problems that plague them drugs, abuse of minors, the abandonment of the elderly, criminality and corruption. He implores us to say no to a sterile pessimism. During Lent, we are called to reflect on the Cross of Christ. What better season than this to look honestly into our lives and communities and honestly assess where we see people bearing that cross today. Like Simon of Cyrene, we can step forward and lift the burden in this moment, and work to be the agents of change needed in this world. Rather than be prophets of doom, resigned and resistant, we can become, in the words of Bishop Ken Untener, prophets of future not our own. (2016 Sourcebook for Sundays, Seasons, and Weekdays, 78-79) Please take some time to read the Lent-Holy Week-Easter Sunday brochure in today s bulletin which describes the many opportunities for prayer and other activities. Please save the brochure for future reference. CELEBRATING MARRIAGE NEXT WEEKEND Since we celebrate the Feast of St. Valentine on February 14, next weekend there will be a special blessing for all married couples who wish to be blessed during Mass. FLOWER DONATIONS Flowers were donated recently in memory of Dick Loman by his wife Sally and their family. If you would like to donate flowers, please contact the Parish Office.

6 Administration & Stewardship TO BE A CHRISTIAN STEWARD Part 4 As each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God s varied grace. (1 Peter 4:10) What identifies a steward? Safeguarding material and human resources and using them responsibly are one answer; so is generous giving of time, talent, and treasure. But being a Christian steward means more. As Christian stewards, we receive God s gifts gratefully, cultivate them responsibly, share them lovingly in justice with others, and return them with increase to the Lord. Stewards of the Church Stewards of God s gifts are not passive beneficiaries. We cooperate with God in our own redemption and in the redemption of others. We are also obliged to be stewards of the Church collaborators and cooperators in continuing the redemptive work of Jesus Christ, which is the Church s essential mission. This mission proclaiming and teaching, serving and sanctifying is our task. It is the personal responsibility of each one of us as stewards of the Church. All members of the Church have their own roles to play in carrying out its mission: Parents, who nurture their children in the light of faith. Parishioners, who work in concrete ways to make their parishes true communities of faith and vibrant sources of service to the larger community. All Catholics, who give generous support time, money, prayer, and personal service according to their circumstances to parish and diocesan programs and to the universal Church. Taken from a Summary of the U.S. Bishops Pastoral Letter on Stewardship USE OF PARISH AND SCHOOL FACILITIES Parishioners and parish groups (including school parents and school groups) are reminded that ALL USE of any Sacred Heart parish or school facility (including parking lots and play fields) large or small, long-term or short-term, planned or last minute must be scheduled in advance and before publication through Val Bromfield at the parish office, vbromfield@sacredheart.org, (425) Thank you for your cooperation. LOOKING FOR A PARISH TO JOIN? Welcome! Sacred Heart Parish is excited to welcome new members to our Christian community.
