3 From the Pastor & Liturgy FROM THE PASTOR ON VACATION I am on vacation until January 23. Please keep me in your prayers this week and feel free to call the parish office with questions or pastoral concerns. Our parish staff is happy to help you. PILGRIMAGE TO GREECE AND TURKEY As you have heard, I am leading a pilgrimage in the footsteps of St. Paul in Greece and Turkey, April 4-11, The itinerary will include several places in Greece and Turkey that St. Paul himself visited on his missionary journeys. The pilgrimage includes a 3-day cruise to Turkey and the Greek islands. We already have 25 people signed up through our parish who are going. We still have room for more to join us, and it would be great if more parishioners were able to come along. You can check out information about the pilgrimage on the homepage on our parish website or contact Jeanine Kasprick, parish registrar for the pilgrimage, at jkasprick@sacredheart.org or at the Parish Office at THE SACRAMENT OF MARRIAGE I encourage all married couples to plan to attend our World Marriage Day evening on February 10th, beginning at the 5pm Mass. A delicious dinner is planned followed by an engaging speaker from Seattle University. Like Holy Orders, Catholic marriage is a Sacrament of Commitment and Service. It has its own unique graces and challenges. I hope all married couples will appreciate their unique vocation and take the time to enrich and celebrate their love for each other. Your faithful witness mirrors God s fidelity and love for us! PARISH LEADERSHIP GATHERING Every winter, we gather all our parish leaders who sit on Councils or Commissions to continue to enhance our skills as Catholic leaders, to coordinate our efforts and to be clear about how we will move forward together to live out our parish Mission and Goals as laid out in our Pastoral Plan, Hearts on Fire. I look forward to meeting with our parish leadership on Saturday morning, January 27th. We will be discussing the information we have gleaned from the Member Engagement Survey from last fall and the Feasibility Study that recently took place at Sacred Heart. I will share the fruits of that work with the whole parish soon after. Let us continue to work together to build up the Kingdom of God here at Sacred Heart. FEAST OF THE CONVERSION OF SAINT PAUL THE APOSTLE Thursday, January 25, is the feast of the Conversion of St. Paul. This feast celebrates God s triumph, even in the most unlikely circumstances. Before Paul meets the Risen Lord on the Road to Damascus, he is Saul, dedicated to viciously persecuting the followers of Jesus Christ. Imagine yourself among those early Christians, and hearing that Saul, one of the most feared enemies of your community, has encountered the Lord and changed his life entirely to serve him from then on. Although certainly astonishing, the conversion of Paul is also deeply inspiring, for it tells us that God does not hold our mistakes against us, but rather calls us to turn our minds and hearts to follow his Son instead. The conversion of Paul is proof that no one is too far beyond the call of the Lord to follow, and that in Christ, change for the better is always possible. (2018 Sourcebook for Sundays, Seasons, and Weekdays, 71) We will have Mass at 8 AM in observance of this feast and the end of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. PRAYERS FOR CONFIRMATION CANDIDATES Please pray for all of our parish Confirmation candidates and especially pray for the candidates who will be on retreat next weekend, January 26-27, at Camp Don Bosco as participants in an archdiocesan retreat for Confirmation candidates. VISITING PRIESTS THIS WEEKEND Father Steve is on vacation until January 23. Father Charles Barnes, SJ, will be the celebrant and presider at the 5 PM Saturday Vigil Mass and Father William (Bill) Cleary, CSsR, will be the celebrant and presider at the two Sunday morning Masses. Please help them feel welcome in our parish. LITURGY PLANNING NEXT SUNDAY There will be a Liturgy Planning session on Sunday, January 28, 1 4 PM. This session will plan Triduum, Easter Sunday, and Lent and Holy Week. Everyone is invited to come and offer their input or listen to the planning. This is a great way to find out how liturgy happens in our parish. WORD AND COMMUNION AND MASS THIS WEEK There will be a Word and Communion Service Monday and Tuesday at 9 AM this week. Mass on Wednesday will be at 9 AM (confessions will be heard from 8:00-8:45 AM); Mass on Thursday will be at 8AM; and Mass on Friday will be at 8:45 AM.

6 Administration & Stewardship TO BE A CHRISTIAN STEWARD Part 5 As each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God s varied grace. (1 Peter 4:10) What identifies a steward? Safeguarding material and human resources and using them responsibly are one answer; so is generous giving of time, talent, and treasure. But being a Christian steward means more. As Christian stewards, we receive God s gifts gratefully, cultivate them responsibly, share them lovingly in justice with others, and return them with increase to the Lord. Obstacles to Stewardship People who want to live as Christian disciples and Christian stewards face serious obstacles. In the United States and other nations, a dominate secular culture often contradicts religious convictions about the meaning of life. This culture frequently encourages us to focus on ourselves and our pleasures. At times, we can find it far to easy to ignore spiritual realities and to deny religion a role in shaping human and social values. As Catholics we have entered into the mainstream of American society and experienced its advantages, many of us also have bee adversely influenced by this secular culture. We know what it is to struggle against selfishness and greed, and we realize that it is harder for many today to accept the challenge of being a Christian steward. It is essential, therefore, that we make a special effort to understand the true meaning of stewardship and live accordingly. Taken from a Summary of the U.S. Bishops Pastoral Letter on Stewardship TO BE A CHRISTIAN STEWARD Part 6 As each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God s varied grace. A Steward s Way The life of a Christian steward models the life of Jesus. It is challenging and even difficult, in many respects; yet intense joy comes to those who take the risk to live as Christian stewards. Women and men who seek to live as stewards learn that all things work for good for those who love God (Romans 8:28). After Jesus, we look to Mary as an ideal steward. As the Mother of Christ, she lived her ministry in a spirit of fidelity and service; she responded generously to the call. We must ask ourselves: Do we also wish to be disciples of Jesus Christ and Christian stewards of our world and our Church? Central to our human and Christian vocations, as well as to the unique vocation each one of us receives from God, is that we be good stewards of the gifts we possess. God gives us this divine-human workshop, this world and Church of ours. The Spirit shows us the way. Stewardship is part of that journey.
