3 From the Pastor & Liturgy FROM THE PASTOR OKTOBERFEST Saturday, October 14, is our Oktoberfest -great food and fun for all ages -beginning at 6 PM in the school gym. Please come and spend some time with old friends and make some new ones. Even if you did not reserve a ticket to come, there is plenty of food, so please come and enjoy. FEASIBILITY STUDY Our parish is currently engaged in a feasibility study to determine parishioners support for replacing our church roof and building a parish Activities Center. We have hired Kris Wallace, a professional fundraising consultant, to assist in the study. When you are called to make an appointment for an interview with Kris, please say yes. There will also be a survey at all the Masses on October 28 and 29, as well as a Town Hall meeting on October 26 to receive your input. Please respond in whatever way is best for you. We are seeking as wide an input as possible from parishioners. OCTOBER IS RESPECT LIFE MONTH -Every October the Catholic Church in the United States celebrates Respect Life Month. During the month of October we focus our attention on our belief that all human life is sacred from womb to tomb. We pray for life and try to be better informed about what our Church teaches about the value of human life. Please take some time to read about life issues on the Social Concerns page in the bulletin during October or go to usccb.org for more information. There is still time to register for the Cornerstone Conference in Tacoma which happens this coming Friday and Saturday, October 21-22, with excellent speakers and workshops on Social Concerns including Respect Life Issues. Go to cornerstonecatholic.org for information and registration. Let us continue to work together to build up the Kingdom of God here at Sacred Heart. ANOINTING OF THE SICK THIS WEEKEND We will celebrate the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick this weekend at all the Masses. Anyone who is seriously ill, is preparing for surgery, or is of advanced age is invited to be anointed. Let us keep our sick brothers and sisters in our prayers as we observe Respect Life month during October. MEMORIAL OF SAINT MARGARET MARY ALACOQUE The (optional) memorial of Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque is on Monday, October 16. She was a French Visitation nun and mystic who promoted devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. In a series of visions, the form of this devotion was revealed: Holy Communion on the first Friday of each month, and the institution of the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart. Margaret Mary was criticized by the other nuns but had the support of the community s confessor, St. Claude La Colombière. (2017 Sourcebook for Sundays, Seasons, and Weekdays, 297) Let us ask St. Margaret Mary to intercede for our parish under the protection of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. We celebrate Mass every First Friday including a 6:30 AM Mass to follow the example set by St. Margaret Mary. LITURGICAL RETREAT: PRAYING WELL TOGETHER Please reserve your calendar for our Liturgical Retreat on Saturday, November 4, here at Sacred Heart. We will begin the retreat with Mass at 9 am (registration will begin at 8:30). After a break there will be three workshops offered (1-A tour of our church; 2-The importance of sacraments; 3-Helping children celebrate the Mass better), and people will choose one workshop to attend. At 11:15 there will be a Keynote Address: Preparing Ourselves to Participate in Mass, followed by a commissioning of liturgical ministers. All adult liturgical ministers are expected to participate in the retreat as their annual opportunity for continuing formation as a liturgical minister. The retreat is open to anyone who would like to participate. No pre-registration is required. PRAYING THE ROSARY October is the month of the Rosary as we celebrate the intercession of Mary for us with her son Jesus. People pray the rosary Monday through Thursday morning at 8:30 and on Friday at 8:15. Also on Monday evening, there is a Holy Hour including praying the Rosary from 7:30-8:30 pm. Everyone is invited to come and pray the rosary at these times. BECOMING A LITURGICAL MINISTER Our parish is always ready to welcome and train new liturgical ministers. If you would like to become a liturgical minister (choir member, reader, altar server, extraordinary minister of communion, sacristan, usher or greeter), please contact the Parish Office. Training sessions will be announced soon for those who are interested and those who signed up on their Time and Talent Commitment form.

4 Pastoral Care & Social Concerns OCTOBER RESPECT LIFE MONTH ASSISTED SUICIDE: To Live Each Day with Dignity: A Statement on Physician-Assisted Suicide To live in a manner worthy of our human dignity, and to spend our final days on this earth in peace and comfort, surrounded by loved ones that is the hope of each of us. In particular, Christian hope sees these final days as a time to prepare for our eternal destiny. Today, however, many people fear the dying process. They are afraid of being kept alive past life s natural limits by burdensome medical technology. They fear experiencing intolerable pain and suffering, losing control over bodily functions, or lingering with severe dementia. They worry about being abandoned or becoming a burden on others. Our society can be judged by how we respond to these fears. A caring community devotes more attention, not less, to members facing the most vulnerable times in their lives. When people are tempted to see their own lives as diminished in value or meaning, they most need the love and assistance of others to assure them of their inherent worth. The healing art of medicine is an important part of this assistance. Even when a cure is not possible, medicine plays a critical role in providing palliative care alleviating pain and other symptoms and meeting basic needs. Such care should combine medical skill with attention to the emotional as well as spiritual needs of those facing the end of life. Sacred Heart Parish is offering a seven-week support group for those experiencing the death of a loved one. MEALS FOR THE HOMELESS For the month of November, Sacred Heart is providing daily meals for homeless men in our area. Please stop by the sign-up table after Mass and help support this vital ministry of helping feed the hungry in our community. Thank you! 6 Administration & Stewardship WORLD MISSION SUNDAY 2017 Annually, World Mission Sunday is celebrated in every parish in the world on the next-tolast Sunday in October. As described by Pope John Paul II, this celebration is "an important day in the life of the Church because it teaches how to give as an offering made to God, in the Eucharistic celebration, and for all the missions of the world." Your contribution next weekend to this special collection supports the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, the Church in Latin America, the Catholic Near East Welfare Association which serves the Middle East, India, parts of Europe and North Africa, the Church in Central and Eastern Europe and the Pastoral Solidarity Fund for the Church in Africa. Each year, the entire Church is invited to support the young mission dioceses in Africa, Asia, the Pacific Islands, and parts of Latin America and Europe, where priests, religious and lay missioners serve the poorest of the poor. This year, we are invited to Chat with the Pope to learn more about his missions. Go to ChatWithThePope.org. HELP WANTED GYM SUPERVISOR(S) Sacred Heart School and Church, Bellevue, seeks a responsible individual(s) to serve as the building manager(s) of our parish school gymnasium during weekend games for our CYO basketball and volleyball seasons (November to April). This is a temporary, part-time position. Must be at least 18 years of age. Excellent part-time job for college students or high school seniors. STEWARDSHIP OF TIME AND TALENT This is the time of year when we encourage each of us to evaluate specifically how we use our time and talent to serve God. We accept the discipline of this yearly reflection as part of our spiritual journey and a healthy relationship with God. We are grateful to Katie and Matt Griffith for sharing a little bit of their story as they try to be good stewards of all they have been given, while parenting three beautiful, young children. We ask all members to take the time today or this week to make your yearly commitment to God to serve from the talents you have been given. Then, please share that commitment with us via the annual response form found on our parish website, sacredheart.org. CAPITAL CAMPAIGN FEASIBLITY STUDY The Community of Sacred Heart has long discussed the idea of building an Activity Center. The Activity Center would be a large, multi-use, gathering space used for both parish and school programs and events. The Activity Center is Phase 2 of our Long Range Building Plan. Preliminary architectural renderings of its footprint and placement on our campus have already been developed. Before the plans are developed any further, it s important to listen to the opinions and feedback of parish and school families. This way, we can gage whether the Sacred Heart community is ready and willing to move forward with the funding and construction of an Activity Center. This effort would also include funding for a new church roof. To explore our readiness for a potential capital campaign, we have hired Kristine Wallace of Capital Campaign Consulting to conduct a Feasibility Study. Kris comes highly recommended and has worked with dozens of parishes in the Archdiocese of Seattle over the past 20 years. The Feasibility Study will help us to understand your position on these Phase 2 plans, listen to questions and concerns, and determine if the necessary funds can be raised. To that end, our consultant has begun by conducting interviews with a cross-section of parishioners that represent both parish and school households. These interviews will continue during the month of October. We will also invite input via a survey which will take place in late October. Every parish and school family will be asked for input! You may be asked to participate in a personal interview with our consultant, Kris Wallace. Or you may be asked to complete a survey. When the opportunity arrives, please accept the invitation to share your thoughts. That is the only way for the resulting decisions to reflect the wishes of the entire Sacred Heart community.

Food, friends and important faith traditions. EVERYONE is invited! SACRED HEART LIFE COMMUNITIES have been meeting the last two Sundays AND it is not too late to join in THIS SUNDAY at 9:30-11am or noon -1:30pm in the school gym. Families with children who attend public school should be part of this program.. Life Communities meet twice per month with a typical session involving a simple meal (prepared just for you!), followed by a presentation & conversation on one of the Essential Concepts from the Catechism of the Catholic Church and ending with time for shared prayer, drawing upon the many prayer forms we enjoy as Catholics.
