3 From the desk of Fr. John: MISSION POSSIBLE! I am sure many of you will remember the original Mission Impossible series from TV which in more recent mes became a movie. The series and the movies all included the instruc on: Your mission, should you choose to accept it is. This Sunday in the Catholic Church worldwide is Mission Sunday. It is an annual reminder that we are a people of mission ---- should we choose to accept it. Our mission is the share the faith that has been handed on to us by whatever means possible; praying, speaking, living it and providing some financial help that it may be supported worldwide par- cularly in countries where they don t have the resources. The third weekend of October every year is set aside to encourage us all to reflect on the mission we have been given to spread the Gospel. For some brave men and women, this involves leaving their home and travelling abroad, building up the church in challenging and some mes dangerous circumstances. Some like Fr. Joseph don t even have to leave home to preach the Gospel in life threatening circumstances; you may have heard his story of having to have four heavily armed guards sta oned outside of his parish church every Sunday to protect against armed a ackers. For all of us this is a call to try to live out the teachings of Jesus and spread the good news, whatever our situa- on in life. It takes courage, and some mes we need to push ourselves to our limits, beyond our comfort zones. Though we stumble and things get difficult --- we have doubts perhaps, or are ridiculed for believing in this day and age ---- we do our best to keep going. It may well be that the most challenging place to prac ce and spread our faith is right in our own families. We all experience members of our own families who no longer believe or profess the faith they grew up with in spite of going through Catholic schools and even Catholic college. Faith has been tested many mes throughout every genera on but the promise of Jesus was that he would be with us always. This is why it is Mission Possible and why it has survived and will survive despite all our challenges and failures. REST IN PEACE. We got word late last week of the death of Fr. Dick Basso who helped out many mes here at Sacred Heart. He died of an aggressive form of pancrea c cancer surrounded by his family in Ba le Creek Michigan. He moved back to Michigan to be with family for his final days on earth when he was diagnosed this past summer. His funeral Mass will be at St. Ambrose Church, Parchment MI on this Monday October 22 however, there will be a Memorial Mass for him at Our Lady of the Lake parish in North Sea le on Wednesday October 24 at 11 am. Bishop Mueggenborg will preside and Fr. Gordon Douglas will preach. Let us remember him in our prayers as his very inspiring mission on earth has ended. May the Holy Spirit enliven our mission in all of us. Fr. John The Feast of St. John Paul II On October 22nd, we celebrate the pope who inspired the world! Born Karol Wojtyla in Krakow, Pope John Paul II became the first-ever Polish pope. He came of age in the early 20th century and lived through both the Nazi and communist occupa ons of Poland. His resistance ac vi es were cultural, opera ng an underground theater company and entering a secret seminary. Karol was ordained a priest in 1946 and later a bishop. He was elected pope in As pope, the interests that captured his heart as a young man con nued -- his pastoral concern for young people, his philosophical emphasis on the human person, and his devo on to Mary and to the mercy of God. St. John Paul II, pray for us!

During the month of November, Sacred Heart Parish, supplies meals to the Congregations for the Homeless, to feed men who are homeless and hungry. Please stop by the table in the narthex to sign up. The food is dropped off at First Congregational Church in downtown Bellevue. We are also please to announce that the campaign to build a permanent 24/7 shelter for homeless families is very close to being fully funded! Gently used items are sold at St. Vinnie s thri stores. Proceeds from the thri store sales help fund programs to help families all over King County. We need gently used men s jeans, shirts and shoes, women s business clothing, and small household items. We also need all kids clothing, winter coats, boots, gloves and sweaters. 6 Administration & Stewardship WORLD MISSION SUNDAY 2018 Annually, World Mission Sunday is celebrated in every parish in the world on the next-to-last Sunday in October. As described by Pope John Paul II, this celebration is "an important day in the life of the Church because it teaches how to give as an offering made to God, in the Eucharistic celebration, and for all the missions of the world." Your contribution this weekend supports the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, the Church in Latin America, the Catholic Near East Welfare Association which serves the Middle East, India, parts of Europe and North Africa, the Church in Central and Eastern Europe and the Pastoral Solidarity Fund for the Church in Africa. Each year, the entire Church is invited to support the young mission dioceses in Africa, Asia, the Pacific Islands, and parts of Latin America and Europe, where priests, religious and lay missioners serve the poorest of the poor. Please contribute using the special collection envelope found in this month s offering envelope packet. Extra envelopes are available in the pews today. You can also donate through the online giving link on our parish website, sacredheart.org. If you re contributing by check, to assist our transfer of these funds, please make your check payable to Sacred Heart Parish. This special collection is one of several taken up each year.
