3 From the Pastor & Liturgy FROM THE PASTOR GENERAL INSTRUCTION ON THE ROMAN MISSAL AND POSTURE AT MASS This weekend I am providing information on posture and gesture during the Liturgy of the Word during Mass. We will begin kneeling during Mass soon at Sacred Heart, and this information from the General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM), will help us understand why we have certain postures and gestures during different parts of the Mass. There is an insert in today s bulletin with the information on the GIRM from last weekend and my remarks this weekend. If you would like to read the GIRM, you can find it at prayer-and-worship/the-mass/general-instruction-of-the -roman-missal. Let us continue to work together to build up the Kingdom of God here at Sacred Heart. PILGRIMAGE OPPORTUNITIES THE GROTTO IN PORTLAND Carol Guenther, Pastoral Associate, and Father Steve will lead a pilgrimage to The Grotto of the Sorrowful Mother in Portland on Wednesday, July 26, the feast of Saints Joachim and Ann, the grandparents of Jesus. We will travel together by bus; we will leave Sacred Heart at 7:30 AM and return by 9:00 PM that evening. We will celebrate Mass together in the Chapel of Mary at the Grotto and have the opportunity for both communal and private prayer at other times during the day. Check the Parish Life section of this bulletin for more details. Make a reservation soon, as space is limited. OUR LADY OF PERPETUAL HELP The Shrine of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Olympia announces its 2017 pilgrimage to be held August There will be Mass, morning and evening prayer, and rosary as well as sacraments of anointing of the sick and penance. Meals are available at nominal cost. For more information: or GREECE AND TURKEY IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF SAINT PAUL Pilgrimage will be April 4-14, 2018; we will visit Greece and Turkey as we see the places that St. Paul himself visited on his missionary journeys. Father Steve will be the Spiritual Director for this pilgrimage. There will be an information meeting about the pilgrimage on Monday, August 21, at 7 PM in the Parish Hall. Everyone is welcome to come and hear about the pilgrimage and details about cost, travel arrangements, etc.; there will be door prizes. Space is limited and early registration provides a discount. Contact Jeanine Kasprick at the Parish Office for information or check out the parish website. SAINT MARY MAGDALENE St. Mary Magdalene is one of the most misunderstood women of the Bible. She was conflated with several other figures by medieval commentators, including Mary of Bethany [sister of Martha and Lazarus] and the sinful woman who washes Jesus s feet with her hair in Luke s account. The confusion about who she is still exists in the Church s calendar: exactly one week from [June 22] we will celebrate St. Martha, sister of a different Mary. What we do know about Mary Magdalene is that Jesus healed her, and that she was the first witness of his Resurrection. (2017 Sourcebook for Sundays, Seasons, and Weekdays, ) In the gospel of Mark, she is the first to witness to the resurrection of the risen Lord (hence, Rabanus Maurus [died 856] called her the apostle of the Apostles. Her feastday is July 22. BAPTISM AT MASS NEXT SATURDAY We will celebrate the Sacrament of Baptism next Saturday, July 22, during the 5 PM Vigil Mass. MUSIC AT MASS DURING THE SUMMER During the summer months music at Mass at Sacred Heart is simpler than during other seasons. The Choirs take a break to allow the members to be nourished and refreshed by the Word and Eucharist as assembly members. Cantors will lead the sung prayer during July and August. Please continue to add your voice to the prayer as Saint Augustine said, The one who sings, prays twice. You will notice that the Gloria, the communal song of praise to our God we sing each Sunday has taken on a simple antiphonal, Call and Response, format. Again, please add your voice to this beautiful prayer so that God s praises may be sung in our hearts and in our Church. Finally, we ll experience a Seasonal Responsorial Psalm for the weekend Masses in July and August. Typically, the Responsorial Psalm is set in the Lectionary as a response to the Old and Testament reading. However, in order for the assembly to more easily join in the response, Seasonal Psalm texts are permissible provided they generally correspond with the readings of that season (General Instruction of the Roman Missal: 61). The Psalm chosen for the majority of the Sundays in July and August is Psalm 145. We ll use the music setting, I will praise your name, my King and my God by composer David Haas. By the time September rolls around, we will be so familiar with this tune that we can pray Psalm 145 at home, in the car, or in those first hectic Back to School days. PREPARE twenty public schools for the new school year, as we work with teachers and administrators to make ready the classrooms & schools, clean & repair the buildings, and beautify the grounds. SEW chair pockets for elementary students to store their books over the back of their chairs. Since 2005, more than 4,800 units have been sewn & delivered. This is the 21 st year that Congregations for Kids Good Start Back to School has been assisting Bellevue School students by supplying needed school supplies. Your support is more critical than ever not only because of the number of students, but also due to increased cost of the school supplies they need. Bellevue School personnel request help for specific children who qualify for the free lunch program. This means that backpacks are tailored to specific students at their grade levels. You may donate by purchasing items from the list or by check. Thank you in advance for helping a child smile and proudly enter a classroom in September, knowing he/she has tools to start the school year. Proceeds will benefit our capital maintenance/improvement fund. TO BE A CHRISTIAN STEWARD Part 5 As each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God s varied grace. (1 Peter 4:10) What identifies a steward? Safeguarding material and human resources and using them responsibly is one answer; so is generous giving of time, talent, and treasure. But being a Christian steward means more. As Christian stewards, we receive God s gifts gratefully, cultivate them responsibly, share them lovingly in justice with others, and return them with increase to the Lord. Obstacles to Stewardship People who want to live as Christian disciples and Christian stewards face serious obstacles. In the United States and other nations, a dominate secular culture often contradicts religious convictions about the meaning of life. This culture frequently encourages us to focus on ourselves and our pleasures. At times, we can find it far too easy to ignore spiritual realities and to deny religion a role in shaping human and social values. As Catholics we have entered into the mainstream of American society and experienced its advantages; many of us also have been adversely influenced by this secular culture. We know what it is to struggle against selfishness and greed, and we realize that it is harder for many today to accept the challenge of being a Christian steward. It is essential, therefore, that we make a special effort to understand the true meaning of stewardship and live accordingly.
