3 From the Pastor & Liturgy FROM THE PASTOR A HEART ON FIRE Our Lenten day of reflection is scheduled for this coming Saturday, March 17, 9 AM until 12:30 PM in the church. Father James Kubicki, SJ, will be the presenter this year. Father Kubicki is the pastor of St. Francis Mission in South Dakota. The day will focus on The Most Sacred Heart of Jesus; copies of Father Kubicki s book on the Sacred Heart, A Heart on Fire, will be available for purchase. Please plan on participating in this day of prayer and reflection and this opportunity to meet Father Kubicki and find out more about St. Francis Mission, our new sister parish. We will have lunch in the narthex after the day of reflection. You can register at the Information desk in the narthex after the weekend Masses or by contacting Carol Guenther at cguenther@sacredheart.org. Registration is required so we can plan on lunch and other materials for the day. Let us continue to work together to build up the Kingdom of God here at Sacred Heart. PENANCE AND RECONCILIATION Individual confession is available at Sacred Heart on Wednesday mornings from 8:00-8:45 AM; and Saturday afternoons from 3:00-4:30 PM. in the Reconciliation Chapel. In addition to the individual scheduled times for the sacrament, you can contact Father Steve at the Parish Office for an individual appointment. There will be a communal celebration of Penance and Reconciliation on March 12 at 7:00 PM at St. Jude (Redmond); on March 13 at 7:00 PM at St. Theresa of Calcutta (Woodinville); on March 14 at 7:00 PM at St. Madeleine Sophie (Bellevue); and on March 15 at 7:00 PM at St. Brendan (Bothell). Our parish communal celebration will be on Monday, March 19 at 7 PM. ABSTINENCE DURING LENT Catholics in the United States are obliged to abstain from meat on all Fridays during the season of Lent. On days of abstinence eating meat is not allowed. The obligation of abstinence applies to those 14 years and older. (The law does not oblige when health or ability to work would be seriously affected.) EASTER SEASON LITURGY PLANNING There will be a planning session for the Easter Season next Sunday, March 18, 1-3 PM in Conference Room One in the Parish Office. There will also be an update for Holy Week and the Triduum. Anyone in the parish is welcome to come and participate or just listen and learn about liturgy at Sacred Heart. SCRUTINIES The scrutinies are rites that help to prepare the Elect to receive the Easter sacraments. We will celebrate the second and third scrutinies with our elect Ujvala Pereira (who is preparing for baptism, confirmation, and eucharist at the Easter Vigil on March 30) at the 8:30 AM Mass, on March 11 and March 18. We will use readings from Year A at these Masses; these readings are indicated in the calendar on page one of the bulletin and in the worship aid. FEAST OF SAINT PATRICK Saturday, March 17, is the feast of Saint Patrick ( ). He was sold into slavery at a young age and eventually freed, and so he wanted people enslaved by doubt and skepticism to know the liberation found in Jesus Christ. Although he had little education, he was appointed bishop of Ireland. His many accomplishments include the conversion of Ireland, ordination of clergy, consecration of virgins, and organization of missions to evangelize Europe. St. Patrick s life has a universal appeal. (2018 Sourcebook for Sundays, Seasons, and Weekdays, 119) His feast day is celebrated not only by the Roman Catholic Church, but also the Episcopal Church in America, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, and the Russian Orthodox Church. Please remember to celebrate Saint Patrick, one of the most popular saints, and ask for his intercession for Ireland. STATIONS OF THE CROSS We are having Stations of the Cross on every Friday at 7 PM during Lent. This devotion is particularly popular during Lent. If you have not been to the Stations of the Cross for some time, or if you have never been, why not consider participating at least once during Lent this year. In addition to the Stations on Friday evenings, we will also have Stations of the Cross at 3 PM on Good Friday, March 30. Holy Thursday, March 29: Mass of the Lord s Supper is at 7:00 PM (Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament after Mass until Night Prayer at 11 PM). Good Friday, March 30: Stations of the Cross are at 3 PM; Celebration of the Lord s Passion is at 7 PM. Holy Saturday, March 31: Easter Vigil is at 8:30 PM. Easter Sunday, April 1: Mass is at 7 AM, 8:30 AM, and 11 AM. Check the home page of the parish website for more details.

4 Pastoral Care & Social Concerns Announcing Sacred Heart s 55+ Corned Beef & Cabbage! St. Patrick s Day Luncheon 11:30am Thursday, March 15 th In the Narthex $15/person Irish songs led by Theresa Galvez Tickets: Sat/Sun March Questions? Contact Mary Dickins, Hosted by Carpe Diem Why We Are Advocating for Dreamers There is a pressing issue before our country today: the future of a very important group of young immigrants called the Dreamers. Dreamers are the 1.8 million young people who were brought to the United States as children by their parents through no fault of their own. They often know America as their only home. Dreamers are woven into the fabric of our country and our Church, and are, by every social and human measure, American. They are contributors to our economy, veterans of our military, academic standouts in our universities, and leaders in our parishes. They live out their daily lives with hope and a determination to flourish and contribute to society. They should not have to live their lives in constant fear of deportation, which brings with it separation from their families and real dangers of violence and poverty in their countries of birth. Please pray that Senators and Representatives will give Dreamers protection and a path to citizenship. Thank you. Making Good Decisions At The End Of Life Dying is one of the most important moments in our lives. Like all important moments, it deserves thoughtful preparation. (Father Lawrence Reilly, Ethicist & Theologian.) The Church encourages all Catholics to prayerfully reflect on death and to prepare for it responsibly. You can make funeral arrangements now and make your wishes known, in writing, to your family, to ensure that your wishes for a Catholic funeral are carried out. For help, please contact Mary Dickins mdickins@sacredheart.org. or FOURTH WEEK OF LENT Encounter Andrise We encounter Andrise, a teacher in Haiti who knows the importance of forming young people who will give back to the community and their country. Reflect on the role teachers have played in bringing you closer to God and your community. How can you support those worldwide, who are forced to flee their homes to find safety or better opportunities? Visit crsricebowl.org for more. Sacred Heart Parish rejoices in announcing our new Sister Parish, St. Francis Mission among the Lakota.. Come and meet Fr. Jim Kubicki, S.J. president of the mission, next weekend, March 17/18, here at Sacred Heart Church. He will preside and preach at all the Masses and will lead the parish Lenten Morning of Reflection on Saturday, March 17 th at 9am. St. Francis Mission is a ministry of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) among the 20,000 Lakota (Sioux) people on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in southcentral South Dakota. It is a not-for-profit organization founded in The purpose of the Mission is to re-evangelize Catholic Lakota people and bring the Gospel of Jesus Christ to those who have not heard it, as we collaborate with them to meet the spiritual, educational, social, and physical needs of the community. A team of Jesuits work in collaboration with a Lakota deacon, several commissioned Lakota lay ministers, and numerous Lakota lay men and women who make the work of the Church possible.

6 Administration & Stewardship CATHOLIC RELIEF SERVICES (CRS) ANNUAL COLLECTION This weekend, March 10-11, the 4th Sunday of Lent, our parish takes up the annual Catholic Relief Services (CRS) Collection. The theme this year is Help Jesus in Disguise. This collection supports six Catholic agencies that touch more than 100 million lives around the world. The funds from the collection help provide food to the hungry, support to displaced refugees, and Christ s love and respect to all people. How will you help Jesus in disguise? Please give generously to the Catholic Relief Services Collection. Please contribute this weekend using the special collection envelope found in this month s offering envelope packet. Extra envelopes are available in the pews. You can also donate through the online giving link on our parish website, sacredheart.org. If you re contributing by check, to assist our transfer of these funds, please make your check payable to Sacred Heart Parish. This collection is one of several special collections taken up each year at Sacred Heart. It is an opportunity to give from the other half of your financial stewardship, the percentage set aside for other charities of your choice. During Lent, Catholic Relief Services provides two opportunities for Catholics in the United States to live in true communion with our brothers and sisters worldwide through CRS annual collection and through CRS Operation Rice Bowl. Operation Rice Bowl offers simple yet powerful ways for families to bring our Catholic faith to life during the holy season of Lent. The program provides resources for families to foster their faith life in the home. By participating in the traditional Lenten practices of prayer, fasting and almsgiving through Operation Rice Bowl, the faithful are making a positive difference in the lives of our brothers and sisters who are most in need. ALMSGIVING DURING LENT Lent is the perfect season to take time to get right with God in all parts of our lives. A key question posed by our late Archbishop Thomas Murphy that can help us get back in right relationship with God is What do I own, and what owns me? At the end of the day, it was abundantly clear to Archbishop Murphy that he owned absolutely nothing, and he himself was owned completely by God. He is remembered for challenging us: It s not about what you tithe, it s about what you do with the other 90 percent. Now that s a different perspective to consider! So when we think about almsgiving this Lent, it s really not about how much or what percentage we give to the poor, as much as it is about how we spend the rest of our financial resources. Where are our spending priorities? What are our true needs? The true needs of others? Can I do a better job at sharing rather than spending? Where does my other 90 percent go? My 95 percent? My 99 percent? At the heart of almsgiving, true disciples recognize God as the source of all. Disciples who practice stewardship recognize God as the origin of life, the giver of freedom, the source of all they have and are and all they will be. They know themselves to be recipients and caretakers of God s many gifts ( Stewardship: A Disciples Response, 1992). Almsgiving extends our love for God so we see him in our neighbor; we see him in those who need love and compassion. Through almsgiving, we recognize the sacrifice that Jesus made on the cross by making a sacrifice of our own. So it s not too late this Lent to examine our priorities and use our checkbooks to demonstrate our love for the Giver of all good gifts.
