3 This year, for the first time, Tacoma has the honor of hosting the 79 th Annual Tekakwitha Conference. The conference runs from July at the Greater Tacoma Convention Center. This annual gathering is held to be the voice, presence and identity of indigenous Catholics under the protection and inspiration of Saint Kateri Tekakwitha. Canonized in 2012, she is the first Native American to be canonized a saint and thus very precious to Native Catholics around the world. WELCOME TO OUR SISTER PARISH FRIENDS! Saint James, July 25th The Saint James we honor today is the brother of the Apostle John, one of the Sons of the Thunder (Mark 3:17) who were privileged witnesses of some of Jesus greatest signs: the raising of the daughter of Jairus from the dead, the Transfiguration, and the agony in the garden. James was the first Apostle to suffer martyrdom and the only one to have his death recorded in the Acts of the Apostles. According to legend, his friends carried his remains away in a rudderless boat that drifted all the way down to Spain. Many centuries later, they were discovered and a great cathedral was built over the spot (Santiago de Compostela), which became one of the most popular pilgrimage destinations of the Middle Ages. He is venerated as the patron saint of Spain, Nicaragua and Guatemala. (2018 Sourcebook for Sundays, Seasons and s, 259) Below are Jen and Ben Black Bear, the leaders of the group, who arrived Tuesday evening from our Sister Parish, St. Francis Mission of the Lakota. They will be attending Mass at Sacred Heart on Sunday, July 22nd at the 11am Mass, at which time you will have a chance to meet and welcome them. Please keep them in your prayers for a safe journey home. Saint Joachim & Saint Anne, July 26th The tradition of Saints Joachim and Anne (first century) is not scriptural but comes mostly from the apocryphal Protoevangelium of James. It became popular in the thirteenth century when Jacobus de Voragine retold the story in his Golden Legend, which was very popular in the Middle Ages. The story of the conception of Mary echoes that of Samuel (see 1 Samuel 1:20): Joachim and Anne are a childless couple who pray to have children and promised to dedicate their child to God. Each is told by an angel that they will conceive, and afterward they meet at the gate of Jerusalem and embrace in joy. This event has been depicted in art by artists such as Dürer and Giotto. 6 Administration & Stewardship TO BE A CHRISTIAN STEWARD Part 4 As each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God s varied grace. (1 Peter 4:10) What identifies a steward? Safeguarding material and human resources and using them responsibly are one answer; so is generous giving of time, talent, and treasure. But being a Christian steward means more. As Christian stewards, we receive God s gifts gratefully, cultivate them responsibly, share them lovingly in justice with others, and return them with increase to the Lord. Stewards of the Church Stewards of God s gifts are not passive beneficiaries. We cooperate with God in our own redemption and in the redemption of others. We are also obliged to be stewards of the Church collaborators and cooperators in continuing the redemptive work of Jesus Christ, which is the Church s essential mission. This mission proclaiming and teaching, serving and sanctifying is our task. It is the personal responsibility of each one of us as stewards of the Church. All members of the Church have their own roles to play in carrying out its mission: Parents, who nurture their children in the light of faith. Parishioners, who work in concrete ways to make their parishes true communities of faith and vibrant sources of service to the larger community. All Catholics, who give generous support time, money, prayer, and personal service according to their circumstances to parish and diocesan programs and to the universal Church. Taken from a Summary of the U.S. Bishops Pastoral Letter on Stewardship EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY Pastoral Assistant for Children s Faith Formation Sacred Heart Parish seeks a faith-filled and creative selfstarter with strong interpersonal and organizational skills and a love for working with children to evangelize preschool and elementary students, inviting them into a relationship with Christ and the Church.
