OUR MISSION STATEMENT Sacred Heart Parish is a welcoming Catholic community, which inspires faith in God, through prayer, sacraments and service, while living Gospel values, as faithful followers of Jesus Christ. Celebrating Epiphany at Church and at Home All parishioners are invited to our Parish Epiphany Party on Sunday, January 7, 2018 in the school gym at 9:45am. We will tell the Christmas story one last time with Scripture, drama and song, as we close the Christmas season for another year. Our hospitality will include a King s cake and hot cider, plus plenty of coffee & donuts. At the Epiphany party we will also have supplies for you to take home to participate in an ancient European tradition called the Chalking of the Doors. Whether our homes are big or small, simple or elaborate, we are reminded on this feast to make room for God and God s blessing on our dwellings and all who live, work or visit us there. The biblical roots of this tradition come from Deuteronomy 6:9 when God instructed the Israelites, who were about to enter the Promised Land: Take to heart these words which I command you today. Keep repeating them to your children. Recite them when you are at home when you lie down and when you get up. Write them on the doorposts of your houses and on your gates. The traditional ritual is to use chalk to write above the home s entrance: 20 + C + M + B The letters C, M, B have two meanings. They are the initials of the traditional names of the three magi: Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar. They also abbreviate the Latin words Christus mansionem benedicat, May Christ bless the house. The + signs represent the cross and 2018 is the year. We encourage all families to adopt this simple Epiphany ritual this year.

4 From the Pastor & Liturgy FROM THE PASTOR ENJOY CHRISTMAS I hope that everyone will have a wonderful Christmas. Bring your friends and relatives to see our Church all decked out in Christmas finery. SAFE TRAVELS I know that many parishioners will travel to other places for the Christmas holidays. I am praying for your safe travels and hope that you have a wonderful Christmas with family and friends. Remember that our church will be in full Christmas attire until January 7, so you will be able to see it when you return. Let us continue to work together to build up the Kingdom of God here at Sacred Heart. GIFT OF LITURGICAL MINISTRY During this time of the year, we often turn our thoughts to gifts: gifts that we give and gifts that we receive. As Catholics, we receive incredible gifts from God when we participate in Mass and other sacramental celebrations. Perhaps, you might want to give a gift in return by serving as a liturgical minister at Sacred Heart. Parishioners serve as readers, altar servers, sacristans, ushers, greeters, and eucharistic ministers. Our goal is that liturgical ministers would only have to serve at one weekend Mass per month in these ministries so that many people can serve. Call or the Parish Office with your name and phone number, and someone will contact you for training. Come join one of our parish s choirs and give the gift of your voice and musical talents. The Sacred Heart Chorale and the Sacred Heart Children s Choir (5 years and older) are always welcoming new members. We are also looking for cantors and people who can play a musical instrument. No audition is required; just come with a willing heart to offer your gift to Sacred Heart. Contact Theresa Galvez, Pastoral Assistant for Liturgical Music at tgalvez@sacredheart.org or , ext PENANCE AND RECONCILIATION Individual confessions are available on Saturday from 3-4:30 PM and on Wednesday from 8-8:45 AM. This sacrament takes place in the Reconciliation Chapel in the northeast corner of the narthex. MARRIAGE PLANS? If you are planning on getting married at Sacred Heart or if you are a Sacred Heart parishioner planning on getting married at another parish, contact the Parish Office at least six months before your planned wedding date so we can assist you with preparation and planning. FEAST OF THE HOLY FAMILY OF JESUS, MARY, AND JOSEPH This liturgical feast has been on the Church s calendar for about one hundred years, often on different dates. It is a devotional or idea feast that was inaugurated by Holy Family associations. Everything we know about the Holy Family, which is not much, comes from the Gospel accounts read over the three years. It celebrates the unity and love so evident in the family of Joseph, Mary, and Jesus. (2016 Sourcebook for Sundays, Seasons, and Weekdays, 41) We will celebrate this feast next weekend, December 30 at 5 PM and December 31 at 8:30 AM and 11 AM. SOLEMNITY OF MARY, THE HOLY MOTHER OF GOD As we continue our celebration of the Christmas season, we celebrate the solemnity of Mary, Mother of God on January 1. We will have Mass on January 1 at 9:00 AM. Please note that since this feast is on a Monday in 2018, it is not a holyday of obligation. One of the most outstanding characteristics of Mary is her willingness to know and to do God s will. While we would like to follow her example, we wonder how she was so sure of it. She reflected on events that happened and were happening. She meditated. In our busy lives today, we often overlook meditation as a prayer. (2017 Sourcebook for Sundays, Seasons, and Weekdays, 47) Perhaps a New Year's resolution might be to spend some time each day meditating on what God is inviting us to be and ask God s help to accomplish it. SOLEMNITY OF THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD On Sunday, January 7 (and at the 5 PM Vigil Mass on Saturday, January 6), we observe Epiphany as we celebrate that the child born in the darkness of night in a lowly manger is revealed as the manifestation [the meaning of epiphany] of God. Christ is revealed in many ways: as Lord, as King, as the one in whom God is present and acts. All of these manifestations are lights that shine on Christ, revealing a deeper understanding of who he is. Traditionally, three events in the life of Christ are remembered today as manifestations of God s presence and action through Christ: the visit of the Magi, the wedding feast of Cana, and the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River. (2017 Sourcebook for Sundays, Seasons, and Weekdays, 51) We will have our regular Sunday schedule for the observance of Epiphany; we will have baptisms at the 11 AM Mass. FUNERALS There will be a Funeral Mass for Robert Kelly on Wednesday, December 27, at 11 AM (there will be no 9 AM Mass that day). There will be a Funeral Mass for Jean Murray on Saturday, January 6, at 10 AM.

5 Christmas 2017 Dear Friends in Christ, In many ways this past year has been a difficult year for many people. There are millions of people who are displaced due to war, the economy, human trafficking and slavery. As we gather to celebrate the birth of the Prince of Peace, I am praying that he will help us to unite our efforts to work together for peace and harmony for all people. We need to welcome strangers and friends alike. On January 1, we celebrate Mary as the Mother of God, but it is also a World Day of Peace. In his message for January 1, 2018, Pope Francis said, In a spirit of compassion, let us embrace all those fleeing from war and hunger, or forced by discrimination, persecution, poverty and environmental degradation to leave their homelands. We know that it is not enough to open our hearts to the suffering of others. Much more remains to be done before our brothers and sisters can once again live peacefully in a safe home. Welcoming others requires concrete commitment, a network of assistance and goodwill, vigilant and sympathetic attention, the responsible management of new and complex situations that at times compound numerous existing problems, to say nothing of resources, which are always limited. Let us pray that during 2018, we may work together to help all people find the basic necessities to live in a safe place. Our parish welcomes everyone who has come to be with us during these Christmas days including: those who are here at Sacred Heart for the first time, those who are looking to join a faith community of committed disciples of Jesus, those who are family members and relatives of parishioners, and those who are home from college. Please know that you are always welcome to come and pray with us here at Sacred Heart. We are a welcoming community who enjoys spending time together and seeing new people join us. If you would like to join our parish, please call the Parish Office and someone will assist you in registering. The staff of our Parish and our Parish School join me in wishing you and all your loved ones and friends a holy and blessed Christmas. Please let us know if there is anything we can do to help you during the year ahead. Blessings in the peace of Christ, Father Steve Sallis, Pastor

8 Administration & Stewardship YEAR-END GIVING TO SACRED HEART All church contributions that you wish posted to your 2017 contribution ledger must be received by the parish no later than Sunday, December 31. Likewise, contributions for 2018 must be received in January. If you are behind in your stewardship of treasure commitment for 2017, please make every effort to bring your giving up to date. The programs, services and outreach offered by our parish as well as the maintenance and repair of our parish campus depends entirely upon your consistent contributions. Thank you for returning to the parish, the poor and other charities a part of the many gifts God has bestowed on you. YEAR-END GIVING A PLANNED GIFT Successful people are often asked how they thrive. What did they do differently than others? One of the secrets they share is the importance of practicing good stewardship. As stewards of the many gifts God has given us, we can give wisely to support the mission of the Catholic Church in Western Washington. When many people think of charitable giving, especially at year s end, they think of making a cash gift. However, there is another way. It s call a planned gift. There are many ways a planned gift can bring benefits back to you while also benefitting your parish community: A charitable gift annuity that pays you fixed income for life at a rate based on your age; A gift of real estate that offers tax and income advantages; and A gift of stock that help you avoid capital gains tax. Many of these benefits can be achieved with a surprisingly modest gift. There are variations on each of these gift options. The Archdiocesan Planned Giving Office is pleased to provide information to you and your advisors as you consider making year-end gifts. You may reach the Planned Giving Office at or toll free or via at plannedgiving@seattlearch.org. You are also welcome to visit their website at As the year comes to a close, reflect on the blessings in your life and consider expressing your gratitude with a planned gift.
