3 From the Pastor & Liturgy FROM THE PASTOR Penance and Lent -Lent is one of the traditional times of the liturgical year when many Catholics participate in the sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation. Please take advantage of this wonderful sacrament of God s mercy and love for us at our parish s Penance Service on Wednesday or at some other opportunity before Easter. Catholic Relief Services Speaker Last weekend we took up the Catholic Relief Services collection which annually supports the agencies of the Catholic Church that provide international relief efforts. Thomas Awiapo spoke at all our Masses about CRS and its effect on him and many others. Thomas lives in Ghana with his wife and four children and works for CRS. Many people shared with me what an impact Thomas words had on them; someone told me they never realized how much CRS did for others. We collected over $13,000 last Sunday for CRS thank you for your generosity and please continue to pray for Thomas and for CRS. Let us continue to work together to build up the Kingdom of God here at Sacred Heart. THIRD GRADERS AT SUNDAY MASS Third graders in our parish are assisting in various liturgical roles at the 11 AM Mass this Sunday. Once a month parish children in different grades are invited to share their time and talent by assisting in liturgical ministry at the 11 AM Mass. Please take a moment and thank our young parishioners for sharing their gifts. LITURGY PLANNING ON SUNDAY There will be liturgy planning for the Easter season and for Ordinary Time during summer this Sunday, April 2, at 1 PM in Conference Room 1 in the Parish Office. Everyone is invited to come with their ideas or just to listen. ABSTINENCE Catholics in the United States are obliged to abstain from meat on all Fridays during the season of Lent. On days of abstinence eating of meat is not allowed. The obligation of abstinence applies to those 14 years and older. FLOWER HELPERS NEEDED We need volunteers to help one or two times a month for approximately an hour each time is all that is needed. If you enjoy caring for flowers you would be a wonderful addition to our parish watering team. For more specific details please contact Karleen Snetsinger at or karsnet@comcast.net. HOLY WEEK BEGINS NEXT WEEK WITH PALM SUNDAY OF THE PASSION OF THE LORD Next weekend we celebrate Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord. Branches of palm, olive, or sometimes even budding willow, are ancient symbols of victory and hope, as well as on new life. The procession celebrating Jesus entry into Jerusalem overflowed with praise and excitement, as onlookers waved these triumphant branches and proclaimed their blessings. The crowd expected a liberating leader, the Messiah, to free them from Roman Oppression. Through his Death and Resurrection he is indeed a liberator, but from death and sin, not from Rome. As we enter Holy Week, Palm Sunday teaches us to let God be God, and to trust in God s wisdom not only to meet but shatter and exceed our expectations. (2017 Sourcebook for Sundays, Seasons, and Weekdays, 135) We will have the procession with palms beginning outside at the 11 AM Mass (we will begin in the narthex in case of rain). HOLY WEEK SCHEDULE Holy Thursday, April 13: Mass of the Lord s Supper is at 7:00 PM. Good Friday, April 14: Celebration of the Lord s Passion is at 7 PM. Holy Saturday, April 15: Easter Vigil is at 8:30 PM. Easter Sunday, April 16: Mass is at 7 AM, 8:30 AM, and 11 AM. Check the insert in today s bulletin (please save this insert for future reference) for more details or home page of the parish website for more details about Holy Week and Easter Sunday. Please look ahead and reserve your calendar for these important liturgical celebrations. LENTEN PENANCE SERVICE THIS WEEK Our parish communal celebration will be on Wednesday, April 5 at 7 PM; there will be an opportunity for individual confession and absolution. There will also be a communal celebration of Penance and Reconciliation on Wednesday, April 5, at 10 AM at St. Louise Parish in Bellevue. Individual confession is available at Sacred Heart on Wednesday mornings from 8:00-8:45 AM; and Saturday afternoons from 3:00-4:30 PM. Individual confession is offered in the Reconciliation Chapel. In addition to the scheduled times for the sacrament, you can contact Father Steve at the Parish Office for an individual appointment. FRIDAY STATIONS OF THE CROSS We will have Stations of the Cross on Friday, April 7, at 7 PM in the church. We will also have Stations on Good Friday, April 14, at 3 PM.

August April 6 Middle School Movie & Game Night The Youth Migrant Project is a summer-long experience that provides current junior high youth (incoming grades 6, 7, 8) a unique and challenging opportunity to live in community and be of service to migrant families in the Skagit Valley. Participant jobs include: assisting in the day care centers, working at the Tri-Parish Food Bank, visiting the migrant camps, and providing donations (procured through participant fees.) Grandparents' and Grandfriends' Day at Sacred Heart School Sacred Heart School Sacred Heart School is excited to once again welcome students, grandparents and grandfriends to join us on Friday, May 12 th. This day is a special time that has been set aside to celebrate mass, visit the students classrooms and come together as a parish school community. This year we will send invitations directly to grandparents and grandfriends. 6 Administration & Stewardship Why Register at Sacred Heart Parish? Have you ever wondered why you need to register with your church? Can t you just come to Mass and go about your business? Of course, the short answer to that is, yes, you can. On the other hand, there are some very good reasons to register with the parish you attend. Church is about our experience of God in community. The first step to community is getting to know one another. When people register at the church, it gives the staff an opportunity to know a little about you your name, where you live, your profession, languages you speak, your interests and hobbies, hopes and concerns, etc. It also gives you a chance to know your church better because the staff can the contact you and keep you informed. Registering is the first step toward getting connected and becoming a member of the community. Also, there are rights and responsibilities that come with membership. This holds true for the person who registers and for the staff. We have a responsibility toward our members. God has given pastors and pastoral staff the role of caring for the flock that gathers here. It is our call from God to make available to our members the sacraments, faith formation, and spiritual support whether it is a good period in your life or a difficult one. We also have the responsibility to assist our members in living out their baptismal call by providing opportunities to get involved in ministry and service at church and in the wider world. Parishioners have rights and responsibilities, too. All Christians are called to take an active role in the work of the Body of Christ. You have a right to all that is listed above, which is the parish s responsibility to provide. And you are also responsible for your parish community. You have the responsibility to support the work of your parish by giving of your time in prayer and worship, by giving of your talents, which come from God, in service to others and by giving of your treasure in financial support of our mission and ministries. All of this is called Stewardship. It means that membership in the Church is a two way street for all of us. We are responsible to one another and to the function of the whole. We are all called to be good stewards of the gift of faith. Registering at Sacred Heart is simple.
