4 From the Pastor & Liturgy FROM THE PASTOR ENJOY CHRISTMAS I hope that everyone will be able to enjoy Christmas and truly take the time to celebrate the presence of Christ, God with us. SACRED HEART PILGRIMAGE FOR JUBILEE OF MERCY I am excited to be the Spiritual Director for A Jubilee Year of Mercy Pilgrimage to Rome, Assisi, and Siena, October 19-28, Please consider being a part of this great pilgrimage to visit Rome to celebrate the Year of Mercy. There will be an information session on Sunday, January 10, in the Parish Hall after both Masses to give more details and answer questions. There is more information on the parish website, or you can contact Mary Dickins at the Parish Office at or at mdickins@scredheart.org. GIVING TREE ANOTHER BIG SUCCESS Thanks to everyone who contributed to this year s Giving Tree which was coordinated by our parish conference of the St. Vincent de Paul Society and Mary Dickins. Many parishioners told me how impressed they were with the generosity of our parishioners in helping those in need. Let us pray for all those who will receive one of those gifts that the light of Christ will shine upon their Christmas. Let us continue to work together to build up the Kingdom of God here at Sacred Heart. CHRISTMAS SEASON The seven days after Christmas are part of the Octave of Christmas when Mass every day is celebrated as closely as possible to Christmas to remind how important a feast this is. The Christmas season continues until Sunday, January 10, the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. FEAST OF THE HOLY FAMILY OF JESUS, MARY, AND JOSEPH This liturgical feast has been on the Church s calendar for about one hundred years, often on different dates. It is a devotional or idea feast that was inaugurated by Holy Family associations. Everything we know about the Holy Family, which is not much, comes from the Gospel accounts read over the three years. It celebrates the unity and love so evident in the family of Joseph, Mary, and Jesus. (2016 Sourcebook for Sundays, Seasons, and Weekdays, 41) We will celebrate this feast on December This feast is for every family in every combination of people. Take some time to pray for your family as well as for all families. SOLEMNITY OF MARY, THE HOLY MOTHER OF GOD As we continue our celebration of the Christmas season, we celebrate the solemnity of Mary on January 1. One of the most outstanding characteristics of Mary is her willingness to know and to do God s will. While we would like to follow her example, we wonder how she was so sure of it. She reflected on events that happened and were happening. She meditated. In our busy lives today, we often overlook meditation as a prayer. (2016 Sourcebook for Sundays, Seasons, and Weekdays, 43) Perhaps a New Year's resolution might be to spend some time each day meditating on what God is inviting us to be and ask God s help to accomplish it. We will have a Vigil Mass at 5 pm on December 31 and Mass on January 1 at 9 am to celebrate this great solemnity of Mary and to pray that this New Year will be filled with grace and blessings. January 1 is a holyday of obligation for Catholics in the United States; we celebrate this holyday of obligation like others by coming to Mass. SOLEMNITY OF THE EPIPHAY OF THE LORD On Sunday, January 3 (and at the 5 PM Vigil Mass on Saturday, January 2), we observe Epiphany as we celebrate that the child born in the darkness of night in a lowly manger is revealed as the manifestation [the meaning of epiphany] of God. Christ is revealed in many ways: as Lord, as King, as the one in whom God is present and acts. All of these manifestations are lights that shine on Christ, revealing a deeper understanding of who he is. Traditionally, three events in the life of Christ are remembered today as manifestations of God s presence and action through Christ: the visit of the Magi, the wedding feast of Cana, and the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River. (2016 Sourcebook for Sundays, Seasons, and Weekdays, 44) We will have our regular Sunday schedule for the observance of Epiphany. FEAST OF THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD The Feast of the Baptism of the Lord proclaims a theophany, a revelation or manifestation of the divine Sonship of Jesus by his anointing and appointment to his messianic office. It is the feast that proclaims the Baptism that elevates believers to the status of sons and daughters of God. (2016 Sourcebook for Sundays, Seasons, and Weekdays, 47) This feast which occurs on Sunday, January 10, gives us an opportunity to thank God for our own baptism. PENANCE AND RECONCILIATION Individual confessions are available on Saturday from 3-4:30 PM and on Wednesday from 8-8:45 AM. This sacrament takes place in the Reconciliation Chapel in the northeast corner of the narthex. You can also call Father Steve for an appointment to celebrate individual confession.

5 Christmas 2015 Dear Friends in Christ, As we gather to celebrate Christmas once again, we realize how blessed we are in so many ways. We are blessed to be sons and daughters of a God who loves us and who became one like us to save us. We are blessed to live in a country where freedom and the pursuit of happiness are fundamental to our way of life. We are blessed to be loved by family and friends who care a great deal about us. Our parish is glad to welcome everyone who has come to pray and welcome the Prince of Peace into our hearts and homes: Visitors from other parts of the country and other countries who grace us with the gift of diversity; Guests of our parishioners who are family members and friends and want to share Christmas with loved ones; College students and young adults who are returning to share Christmas at home; and, Those who are seeking to find a community of believers who will share their faith and their story. Our parish rejoices that we are all here together to pray and sing together as one vibrant and faith-filled community. This year we are especially aware of the mercy of God as we have just begun a Jubilee Year of Mercy that will extend until the end of November Pope Francis invites us during this year to be aware of the mercy that God offers us as well as the mercy we can extend to others. During this Jubilee Year he has asked us to focus our attention on the Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy to remind us about our responsibility to help others. He has also asked that we reinvigorate our appreciation for the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation which gives us the opportunity to receive God s mercy and grace to be better disciples of God s Son. The staff of our Parish and our Parish School join with me in wishing you and all you loved ones and friends a holy and blessed Christmas. Please let us know if there is anything we can do to help you during the days ahead. May the New Year bring you much joy. In the peace of Christ, Father Steve Sallis Pastor

The programs, services and outreach offered by our parish as well as the maintenance and repair of our parish campus depends entirely upon your consistent contributions. Thank you for returning to the parish, the poor and other charities a part of the many gifts God has bestowed on you. May God bless you in the new year. YEAR-END GIVING, PART 2 Successful people are often asked how they thrive. What did they do differently than others? One of the secrets they share is the importance of practicing good stewardship. As stewards of the many gifts God has given us, we can give wisely to support the mission of the Catholic Church in Western Washington. When many people think of charitable giving, especially at year s end, they think of making a cash gift. However, there is another way. It s called a planned gift. There are many ways a planned gift can bring benefits back to you while also benefitting your parish community: A charitable gift annuity that pays you fixed income for life at a rate based on your age; A gift of real estate that offers tax and income advantages; and A gift of stock that helps you avoid capital gains tax. Many of these benefits can be achieved with a surprisingly modest gift. There are variations on each of these gift options. The Archdiocesan Planned Giving Office is pleased to provide information to you and your advisors as you consider making year-end gifts. You may reach the Planned Giving Office at or toll free or via at plannedgiving@seattlearch.org. You are also welcome to visit their website at As the year comes to a close, reflect on the blessings in your life and consider expressing your gratitude with a planned gift. USE OF PARISH AND SCHOOL FACILITIES Parishioners and parish groups (including school parents and school groups) are reminded that ALL USE of any Sacred Heart parish or school facility (including parking lots and play fields) large or small, long-term or short-term, planned or last minute must be scheduled in advance and before publication through Val Bromfield at the parish office, vbromfield@sacredheart.org, (425) Thank you for your cooperation. LOOKING FOR A PARISH TO JOIN? Welcome! Sacred Heart Parish is excited to welcome new members to our Christian community.
