3 From the Pastor & Liturgy FROM THE PASTOR PRAYERS FOR THE ORLANDO TRAGEDY As we heard the news of the tragedy in Orlando this past week, we were shocked to hear about how many were killed and injured. The long term effects of this tragedy are still unfolding, but I am praying that we will do all that we can as a nation to stop this kind of senseless killing from happening again. Let us continue to remember and pray for those who died and were injured and for all who have been affected by these tragic events. PRIEST DAYS I will participate in our annual Priest Days in Ocean Shores this week; I will leave after the 5 PM Sunday Mass and will return on Thursday. Please remember me and all the priests of the archdiocese as we meet this week. PRAY FOR OUR NEW PRIESTS Four men will be ordained to the priesthood this coming Saturday, June 25, at 10 AM at St. James Cathedral. The new priests are Michael Dion, Kyle Manglona, Cody Ross, and Patrick Sherrard. Anyone who wants can attend the ordination Mass. Please pray for these newly ordained as they begin their priestly ministry in our diocese and pray that other young men will respond to the invitation to serve as priests for our local church. PILGRIMAGE TO ROME We still have a few spaces available for our Pilgrimage to Rome (and Assisi and Sienna) from October I am excited to be able to participate in the Extraordinary Year of Mercy in Rome which will include an audience with Pope Francis and visiting the four major basilicas in Rome and going through the holy doors in each basilica. Contact Mary Dickins at the Parish Office or check our parish website for more information and to register. I hope that more of our parishioners will take this opportunity to visit Rome during this holy year. Let us continue to work together to build up the Kingdom of God here at Sacred Heart. BLESSING FOR FATHERS This weekend as we celebrate Father s Day, there will be a blessing for fathers at all the Masses. Let us take this opportunity to remember and pray for all of our fathers whether they are alive or deceased. SOLEMNITY OF THE NATIVITY OF SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST John the Baptist was the great prophet and herald of Jesus the Messiah. He prepared the way of the Lord and revealed Jesus to others as both the Messiah and the Lamb of God. St. John exemplifies the Christian life as one who proclaims the Gospel message of healing and repentance while he points out Christ to others and shows them the way to become united with God. This is an ancient solemnity, reaching back to the fourth century, though the date of the celebration varied in East and West. In the East, the birth of the forerunner was celebrated on the day after Epiphany, January 7, because of the association of that feast with the Baptism of the Lord. In the West, it was celebrated on June 24, in keeping with Luke 1:36, which notes that Elizabeth was six months pregnant at the time of the Annunciation of the Lord. (2016 Sourcebook for Sundays, Seasons, and s, 235) We will celebrate the birth of St. John the Baptist on Friday, June 24. WORD AND COMMUNION SERVICES THIS WEEK Since Father Steve will be participating in this coming week, there will be a Word and Communion Service at 9 AM on Monday through Thursday. Word and Communion will take place in the narthex because the church floor will be waxed during the week. There will be Mass at 8:45 AM on Friday morning. FLOWER DONATIONS Flowers were donated recently in observance of this year s graduates of Sacred Heart School by their parents and in memory of Lillian Kastner by her family. If you would like to make a donation for flowers in the church, please contact the Parish Office. NEW WEEKEND MASS SCHEDULE BEGINS JULY 2-3 Our new weekend Mass schedule will begin the weekend of July 2-3, 2016: Saturday at 5 PM, Sunday at 8:30 and 11 AM. Sunday, June 26, will be the last 5 PM Sunday Mass until September 11. There is more information about the schedule on the parish website: New Weekend Mass

6 Administration & Stewardship 2016 PETER S PENCE COLLECTION Next weekend, June 25-26, we take up the annual Peter s Pence special collection. United with more than 1 billion Catholics worldwide who participate in the collection, we have a chance to support the spiritual and charitable works of the Holy Father, Pope Francis. This year s theme is Be a Witness of Charity. See the special insert in today s bulletin for more information. Please contribute generously next weekend using the special collection envelope found in this month s offering envelope packet. Extra envelopes are attached to today s bulletin insert and will be available in the pews next weekend. Place your Peter s Pence envelope in the regular collection along with your offerings to the parish. To assist our transfer of these funds, please make your check payable to Sacred Heart Parish. This special collection is one of four taken up each year. It s an opportunity to give from the other half of your financial stewardship, the percent set aside for other charities. If I, therefore, the master and teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash one another s feet. I have given you a model to follow, so that as I have done for you, you should also do. (John 13:14-15) ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL 2016 The 2016 Annual Catholic Appeal campaign is still underway in our parish. Thank you to those parish households who have made a pledge. However, we have not yet met our goal in dollars or in participation. Every gift, no matter the amount, is gratefully appreciated and vital if we are to make our goal of $210,000. If you have not yet done so, the important thing is that your household participate in some way in this year s campaign. PARISH GIVING FUND To model stewardship giving on a parish level, Sacred Heart has traditionally given away a portion of its ordinary income (Sunday and holyday offerings) to worthy charities beyond parish boundaries. Fr. Steve has assembled a small committee to make recommendations to him on where this money should be directed.
