3 From the Pastor & Liturgy FROM THE PASTOR FIRST YOUTH MASS LAST SUNDAY Last Sunday at 5 PM was our first Youth Mass here at Sacred Heart. Over 200 people attended the Mass including more than 40 Middle School and High School parishioners. Several people who attended the Mass told me they really enjoyed it and were glad that our parish had made this commitment to our youth by having this Mass. Several Middle School and High School youth had dinner and stayed for Youth Groups which meet Sunday after the Youth Mass. I want to invite all of our parish Middle School and High School parishioners to participate in the Youth Mass and stay for Youth Group. Thanks to Jeff Kress, Pastoral Assistant for Youth and Young Adults, for coordinating the effort to begin this Mass. Thanks also to the Worship Band, the liturgical ministers, the greeters, and parents who helped with the Mass. Thanks also to our Parish Life Committee who provided food after Mass. CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK The theme for the National Catholic Schools Week 2016 (January 29- February 6) is Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service. Various activities are planned for the week in our parish and parish school. Check our school s website for more details. Take the opportunity to visit our excellent parish school and see why Catholic education does make a difference. Let us continue to work together to build up the Kingdom of God here at Sacred Heart. TIME TO RETURN BLESSED PALMS Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, February 10. Please return your blessed palms from last year; blessed palms are burned to make the ashes for Ash Wednesday. You can return your blessed palms to a basket in the narthex or bring them to the Parish Office. FEAST OF SAINT PAUL MIKI AND COMPANIONS St. Paul Miki [+1597], a Jesuit priest, was one of the twenty-six martyrs of Japan. Feeling threatened by the growing influence of the Jesuits, the local governor had members of the Christian community arrested and thrown in jail. They were forced to walk 600 miles from Kyoto to Nagasaki as a deterrent to other Christians, but they sang the Te Deum as they went. At Nagasaki they were crucified. When Christian missionaries returned to Japan in the nineteenth century, they found that a secret Christian community had survived by transmitting their beliefs and prayers from generation to generation. (2016 Sourcebook for Sundays, Seasons, and Weekdays, 75) The feastday for Saint Paul Miki and Companions is on Saturday, Feb. 6. BLESSING OF THROATS While serving as Bishop of Sebastea, in Armenia, St. Blaise was a visible witness of the Gospel, which eventually led to his martyrdom during the persecutions of Diocletian. His feast day is commemorated with a blessing of throats because legend says that he cured a young boy choking on a fish bone. (2016 Sourcebook for Sundays, Seasons, and Weekdays, 74) We will celebrate St. Blaise s feastday on Wednesday, February 3; Father Steve will bless throats after the 9 AM Mass. CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK MASS ON FRIDAY Students and staff from our parish school will participate in the 8:45 AM Mass on Friday, February 5 to celebrate Catholic Schools Week. Members of the Student Council will assist by serving in various liturgical ministries at the Mass. As always, everyone is welcome to Mass whenever it is offered at Sacred Heart. 6 Administration & Stewardship TO BE A CHRISTIAN STEWARD Part 3 As each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God s varied grace. (1 Peter 4:10) What identifies a steward? Safeguarding material and human resources and using them responsibly are one answer; so is generous giving of time, talent, and treasure. But being a Christian steward means more. As Christian stewards, we receive God s gifts gratefully, cultivate them responsibly, share them lovingly in justice with others, and return them with increase to the Lord. Stewards of Vocation Jesus calls us, his disciples, to a new way of life the Christian way of life of which stewardship is part. But Jesus does not call us as nameless people in a faceless crowd. He calls us individually, by name. Each one of us clergy, religious, lay person; married, single; adult, child has a personal vocation. God intends each one of us to play a unique role in carrying out the divine plan. The challenge, then, is to understand our role our vocation and respond generously to this call from God. Christian vocation entails the practice of stewardship. In addition, Christ calls each of us to be stewards of our personal vocations, which we receive from God. STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE UPDATE If you have not yet done so, please return your Stewardship of Treasure Commitment Card for 2016 to the parish office right away! You can put it in the offering basket at Mass or mail it to the parish office in the return envelope provided. Another follow-up letter will be mailed soon. So far, 562 households have returned a card. The average pledge is about $37.00 per week, a 10% increase over the average weekly pledge in But we still have a ways to go! We need to hear from every parish household! Thank you to all those who have returned a card and especially to those who took a step in their giving percentage goal! May God continue to bless you for your faithful response to His generosity. 7 Faith Formation MERCIFUL LIKE THE FATHER is the theme for our parish Lenten Mission taking place February 27th March 2nd at Church. Carol Guenther will be our retreat leader and will guide us through the Corporal and Spiritual works of mercy as we enter more deeply into the Jubilee Year of Mercy. There will be daily mass, morning & evening sessions, Stations of the Cross, the Rosary of Mercy and much more. Plan now to make this a special week with God. PREPARING FOR LENT: Ash Wednesday is right around the corner (February 10)! We invite you to stop by the Lenten resource table NEXT SUNDAY to pick up a daily Lenten reflection guide and other reading material to support your disciplines of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Please pray for our 8 Catechumen who will be initiated through Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Eucharist at the Easter Vigil this year and join our faith community: Hayden and Trinity Good; Hillary Graciano, Anisha Hayes, Judd Lee, Ryan and Kelli McGaughey and Valerie Zuluaga.
