3 From the Pastor & Liturgy FROM THE PASTORAL COORDINATOR Hello, Sacred Heart community! I am humbled and excited about being with you for the next year. God truly works in mysterious ways as I return to the parish of my baptism. 60 years ago, in 1958 I was baptized here at Sacred Heart. Shortly after coming home from a walking pilgrimage from Assisi to Rome, I was asked to journey with the community of Sacred Heart. It is with a deep sense of humility and trust in the providence of the Holy Spirit that I join you as your Pastoral Coordinator for the next year. A little about me I am a lifetime resident of Bellevue and have been married to my wife Lynette for 30 years. We have two grown children Emily and Paul, a son in law Alex, two grandchildren and another on the way. On November 29, 2007 I was ordained a deacon. I am also the founder of Basta Boatlifts, a company based here in Bellevue for over 30 years. For free time I enjoy taking walks with my dog and spending time with family. I look forward to working with Fr. Madigan, the staff, the school, the commissions, and the entire community of Sacred Heart. With the Holy Spirit as our guide I m confident that the good works that have been entrusted to us will come to fruition. Peace, Deacon Sam Basta FATHER STEVE SENDS A THANK YOU I want to offer a sincere and heartfelt thank you to everyone who helped me pack up things in my office, who came to my farewell party, who offered prayers and words of support, and especially for the parish staff and Transition Team who did such a great job last weekend. I want to extend a special word of thanks to Mary Dickins who was in charge of my farewell activities. My farewell letter is on the parish website if you want to read what I said. I will keep the parish in my thoughts and prayers, and I ask that you keep me and my family in yours as well. FLOWER DONATIONS Flowers were donated last weekend in observance of Father Steve s farewell. If you would like to donate flowers in memory of someone who has died or for some other occasion, please contact the Parish Office. DEACON SAM AND FATHER JOHN Deacon Sam Basta and Father John Madigan will be at all the Masses on July 7 and 8 followed by a reception for them. They will be in the narthex during cheese and crackers after the 5 PM Mass and at coffee and donuts on Sunday morning after the 8:30 AM Mass for everyone to have an opportunity to meet them. They will be in the school gym after the 11 AM Mass on Sunday; there will be a taco bar for everyone and a chance to meet Deacon Sam and Father John. MEMORIAL OF SAINT BENEDICT Wednesday, July 11, is the memorial of Saint Benedict. Saddened by the immoral state of society, St. Benedict of Nursia [ /7] left the city to live as a hermit at Subiaco. In time, more and more men were attracted to his charismatic personality as well as to his way of life. He eventually moved a group of monks to Monte Cassino, near Naples, where he completed the final version of his rule, now known as the Rule of St. Benedict, on the fundamentals of monastic life, including the day-to-day operation of a monastery. The rules asserts that the primary occupation of the monk is to pray the Divine Office in tandem with a vowed life of stability, obedience, and conversion. The whole of the monastic vocation can be summarized in the opening line of his rule, Listen carefully. St. Benedict is considered the father of Western monasticism. (2018 Sourcebook for Sundays, Seasons, and Weekdays, 251) ANOINTING OF THE SICK THIS WEEK The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick will be celebrated during 9 AM Mass on Thursday, July 12. Anyone who is of advanced age, who is seriously ill, or who is preparing for surgery is invited to be anointed. Carpe Diem will host coffee and conversation in the narthex after Mass. FUNERAL ON SATURDAY There will be a Funeral Mass for Rose Hill on Saturday, July 14, at 11:00 AM. There will be a reception in the narthex following the Funeral.

6 Administration & Stewardship TO BE A CHRISTIAN STEWARD Part 2 As each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God s varied grace. (1 Peter 4:10) What identifies a steward? Safeguarding material and human resources and using them responsibly are one answer; so is generous giving of time, talent, and treasure. But being a Christian steward means more. As Christian stewards, we receive God s gifts gratefully, cultivate them responsibly, share them lovingly in justice with others, and return them with increase to the Lord. Stewards of Creation The Bible contains a profound message about the stewardship of material creation: God created the world, but entrusts it to human beings. Caring for and cultivating the world involves the following: Joyful appreciation for the God-given beauty and wonder of nature. Protection and preservation of the environment, which would be the stewardship of ecological concern. Respect for human life, shielding life from threat and assault, doing everything that can be done to enhance this gift and make life flourish. Development of this world through noble human effort physical labor, the trades and professions, the arts and sciences. We call such effort work. Work is a fulfilling human vocation. The Second Vatican Council points out that, through work, we build up not only our world but the Kingdom of God, already present among us. Work is a partnership with God our share in a divinehuman collaboration in creation. It occupies a central place in our lives as Christian stewards. Taken from a Summary of the U.S. Bishops Pastoral Letter on Stewardship What will you give back to God from the blessings you have received?
