2 Pentecost May 24, 2015 Pentecost: Reversing Humanity s Death Spiral Now the whole earth had one language and the same words. Genesis 11:1 So the Bible describes humanity in its earliest years, even after sin entered the world. But human pride got in the way. The plan was to build a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves Genesis 11:4 the idea was for human beings to make themselves like God. God saw it that way too. He said, This is only the beginning of what they will do; nothing that they propose to do will now be impossible for them. Genesis 11:6 The Lord confused their language into many languages, they gave up their plans, and the abandoned tower became known as the Tower of Babel, meaning to confuse. And to this day, a babble is a confusion of sounds. Men and women tried to reach up to God and make themselves equal to God but it had the opposite result. Humanity s a)empt to climb upward to the heights of divinity by its own efforts ended with humanity headed downward in a death spiral, deeper into our flight away from God. At Pentecost, God reverses humanity s death spiral downwards, completing his 4-step rescue plan for the world. Pentecost was a Jewish feast, celebrating the Lord coming down to Mount Sinai and giving Moses the Law. On the celebration of Pentecost immediately after the Resurrection and Ascension of Jesus, the Lord again comes down, this time on all the disciples of Jesus: Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them the ability. Acts 2:4 Now, the followers of Jesus are able to go out to every nation to share the life-giving news of what God as done in Jesus Christ! One of the miracles of Pentecost is that the confusion of the Tower of Babel is undone. Jewish pilgrims, gathered in Jerusalem from all over the known world, speaking different languages, marvel than in our own languages we hear the disciples speaking about God s deeds of power. Acts 2:11 The brokenness and sha)ered unity of the world, brought about by human pride trying to reach up to God, is undone by God reaching down from heaven to us, and restoring unity through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and leading us by his power, not ours up the road to our heavenly destiny. God s Four-Step Rescue Plan In Jesus Christ Incarnation The Son of God, Second Person of the Trinity, takes on human life in the conception of Jesus in Mary s womb. He experiences all of human life, including death, to bring it all back to God. Resurrection Jesus, as God and Human, overpowers death and everything that a)empts to destroy men and women. Ascension The saving event of Jesus Christ s Death and Resurrection is lifted up into the Trinity, to have universal power for every time and place, and human nature is seated at the right hand of God, guaranteeing our destiny. Pentecost The Father and the Son send out the Holy Spirit through the family of believers the Church to continue lifting up the world towards its place in heaven, until Jesus returns in glory! 3 St. Mary Mission has two volunteers willing to spearhead sending some of our youth to World Youth Day in Krakow, Poland with Pope Frances, July 25-31, We are now looking for registered youth members of St. Mary Mission who will be at least 16 years old by June, 2016, who are interested in going to World Youth Day Mary Rose at and "cc" a copy of your message to Janet Rojas at mjrojas@whidbey.net to let us know you want to be a WYD pilgrim. Whether it be helping in some way with a fundraiser, let us know. We are a small church and we need everyone willing to help in some way to help make this happen. The proceeds will go toward several charities as well as our own Religious Education program. St Hubert s Catholic Church, located at 804 Third Street in Langley, will host a Called to Protect for Parents and Families on Thursday, May 28th at 3:30 pm in room 3 for parents, families members and all interested in learning how to protect children. Participants will learn how to recognize signs of abuse; how to respond to suspected abuse and how to teach their children how to keep themselves safe. This is an optional class that does not satisfy any training requirement for volunteer service.
