3 From the Pastor & Liturgy FROM THE PASTOR Thanks Having had some time to reflect on Holy Week and Easter Sunday at Sacred Heart, I am profoundly grateful for many things. First of all, I am grateful to be your pastor; I have had so many unexpected blessings over these past six years for which I have much to be grateful for. I am also grateful for the hundreds of people who come to pray with us here for Holy Week and Easter Sunday; so many people stopped to share with me their gratitude for participating in our parish liturgies. Which brings me to another note of gratitude for all the liturgical ministers and other parishioners who helped to make our liturgies so prayerful and filled with joy; many people put in a huge number of hours and participated in multiple liturgies by sharing their time and talent with us. Finally, on a personal note, I am grateful for the greetings and cards that I have received during this holy time: I am touched by the kindness of so many. Pilgrimage in the Footsteps of Saint Paul to Greece and Turkey I am on pilgrimage in the footsteps of Saint Paul to Greece and Turkey until April 14. I will remember all of you in my prayers and at our daily Masses, and I will ask all of the pilgrims to join with me in praying for you. Please keep us in your prayers as well. You can see our progress on our parish website; check it daily for updates. I will see you next Sunday. Attention men at Sacred Heart I encourage you to participate in the 6th Catholic Men s Conference on April 14. Several men in our parish have attended past Men s Conferences and have told me how much they benefitted from the experience. Check out the information below to register. Let us continue to work together to build up the Kingdom of God here at Sacred Heart. 6TH SEATTLE CATHOLIC MEN'S CONFERENCE Want to be the man that God has always call you to be? Grow closer to God through several awesome speakers, engaging worship and inspiring fellowship with hundreds of your fellow Catholic Christians. You are invited to come to the 6th Annual Seattle Catholic Men's Conference, April 14th at St. Stephen the Martyr Parish in Renton, WA (13055 SE 192d Street). The event starts with Mass at 8:00 am and concludes at 4:00 pm. Lunch included. This year s theme is: The Prodigal Father. Registration and further information at seattlemensconference.org. SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY Sunday, April 8, is the Second Sunday of Easter. As the eighth day of the Octave of Easter, this Sunday completes the Easter Octave Historically, this day was given the name Dominica in albis the last day for the neophytes to wear their white baptismal garments. (2018 Sourcebook for Sundays, Seasons, and Weekdays, 179) To remind us of the baptismal character of all of Easter Time, we will use the Sprinkling of Water as a memorial of Baptism in place of the Penitential Act at the beginning of Mass on all the Sundays of Easter. The Second Sunday of Easter also celebrates Divine Mercy. This day was established by Pope John Paul II as a perennial invitation to the Christian world to face with confidence in divine benevolence the difficulties and trials that humankind will experience in the years to come [Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, May 23, 2000]. This is not a new solemnity or feast, nor does it celebrate a new or separate mystery of redemption, but rather, it leads into the continuing celebration of God s mercy during Easter Time. (2018 Sourcebook for Sundays, Seasons, and Weekdays, 179) There is an image of Divine Mercy in the Sacred Heart shrine this weekend; there are holy cards of Divine Mercy with Divine Mercy prayers for people to take home. May the Divine Mercy of God shine upon our parish. VISITING PRIESTS THIS WEEKEND Since Father Steve is on pilgrimage April 4-14, Father Charles Barnes, SJ, chaplain at the VA hospital in Seattle, will be the celebrant and homilist at the 5 PM Vigil Mass on Saturday. Father Lyle Konen, CSsR, a senior priest at Sacred Heart parish in Seattle, will be the celebrant and homilist at the 8:30 AM and 11:00 AM Masses on Sunday. WORD AND COMMUNION THIS WEEK Since Father Steve is on pilgrimage this week, there will be Word and Communion, Monday through Thursday at 9 AM and on Friday at 8:45 AM.

6 Administration & Stewardship STEWARDSHIP AND CARE OF CREATION The Catholic Church brings a distinct perspective to the discussion of environmental questions, by lifting up the moral dimensions of these issues and the needs of the most vulnerable among us. This unique contribution is rooted in Catholic teaching calling us to care for creation and for "the least of these." (Mt 25:40) In his 2015 encyclical Laudato Si, Pope Francis addresses every person on the planet, for we all share a common home the earth. He focuses on a number of important themes. A Moral and Spiritual Challenge. The ecological crisis, Pope Francis writes, is a summons to profound interior conversion to renew our relationships with God, one another, and the created world. Care for God s Creation. God created the world and entrusted it to us as a gift. Now we have the responsibility to care for and protect it and all people, who are part of creation. We are All Connected. We are connected to the rest of the human family, to the created world, and to those who will come after us in future generations. Impact on the Poor. People in poverty have contributed least to climate change, yet they are disproportionately impacted by it. As a result of excessive use of natural resource by wealthy nations, those who are poor experience pollution, lack of access to clean water, hunger, and more. Called to Solidarity. We are one human family and have a shared responsibility for others and for creation. Wealthy countries have a responsibility to reduce consumption of non-renewal resources and should help poorer nations develop in sustainable ways. Technological and economic development must serve human beings and enhance human dignity, instead of creating an economy of exclusion, so that all people have access to what is needed for authentic human development. As we approach the celebration of Earth Day this year on Sunday, April 22 nd, we encourage all parishioners to pick one new action to demonstrate your care and commitment to our common home. LOOKING FOR A PARISH TO JOIN? Welcome! Sacred Heart Parish is excited to welcome new members to our Christian community.
