3 From the Pastor & Liturgy FROM THE PASTOR THANKS TO PATTY OSCAR Patty Oscar will retire at the end of June after 35 years of service here at Sacred Heart Parish. She has worked for several pastors over the years, and she has always adjusted her work to accommodate the pastor at the time. I have deeply appreciated what Patty has done for the parish during my 5 years as pastor. She has always responded with a smile and a willingness to do whatever she has been asked to do. I have deeply appreciated her sense of history, and all the institutional memory she holds. She will be missed on the parish staff, but I am glad that she will continue to be a parishioner here at Sacred Heart. She is looking forward to spending more time with her family and in her beautiful garden. Please come to Patty s retirement party next Saturday, or, if you can t, send her a card. Please remember Patty in your prayers during this time of transition. PRIEST DAYS It is time for the annual gathering of all the priests who serve in the archdiocese at Ocean Shores this coming week. I will leave Sunday afternoon and will return to the parish on Thursday morning. Let us continue to work together to build up the Kingdom of God here at Sacred Heart. BLESSING FOR FATHERS This weekend our country recognizes all fathers. We will pray for our living and deceased fathers and offer a blessing for fathers who are present at all the Masses this weekend. EUCHARISTIC PROCESSION ON SUNDAY This Sunday is the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. Our parish will celebrate this great solemnity with a Eucharistic Procession around the parish grounds after the 11 AM Mass this Sunday, June 18. If you plan on attending a different Mass this weekend, come and join the Eucharistic Procession at noon. LITURGY IN NARTHEX THIS WEEK The church floors will be cleaned and waxed this coming week Monday through Thursday. The church nave will be closed during those days, and liturgy will take place in the narthex. RETIREMENT CELEBRATION FOR PATTY OSCAR Patty Oscar has been a parish staff member for 35 years; she will retire at the end of this month. She will continue to be a parishioner here at Sacred Heart after her retirement. Patty and her family will participate in the 5 PM Mass on Saturday, June 24, and there will be a reception for her in the Father Connole Courtyard after Mass. Please come to the reception and take the opportunity to thank Patty for her many years of service at Sacred Heart. She has asked that no gifts be given. SOLEMNITY OF THE MOST SACRED HEART OF JESUS NEXT SUNDAY The solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, the patron of our parish, is next Sunday. Since this is our patronal feast day, it is moved from Friday, June 23, to next weekend so more parishioners can enjoy the celebration. One of the most beloved aspects of our Catholic tradition is our devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. In honoring the Sacred Heart, we are honoring the compassion and love of Christ: his human heart, moved with pity for his flock, his divine heart pierced for their sins of his people. From the heart of Christ, pierced by the soldier's lance, blood and water poured out, the wellspring of the Church s Sacraments [Preface for the Sacred Heart]. While saints and mystics, notably the thirteenth century Benedictine St. Gertrude, have long found the heart of Christ a rich subject matter for meditation, it was not until the seventeenth century, in France, that devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus began to take the form we know today. People were convinced that human sinfulness was too great to be forgiven, that salvation would only be granted to a few. In this climate of fear, the revelations of Sr. Margaret Mary Alocoque, a religious of the Visitation order, in the French town of Paray-le-Monial, France, must have come as a complete and wonderful surprise. The devotion spread, and the feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus was added to the universal calendar in On the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, we give thanks to God for the infinite love of Christ, represented by the image of his heart on fire with love. Through our prayer, we also seek to make reparation for the ways that love has been rejected by human beings. This is why in the familiar image, Christ s heart is pierced and surrounded with thorns. PREPARE twenty public schools for the new school year, as we work with teachers and administrators to make ready the classrooms & schools, clean & repair the buildings, and beautify the grounds. SEW chair pockets for elementary students to store their books over the back of their chairs. Since 2005, more than 4,800 units have been sewn & delivered. 6 Administration & Stewardship 2017 PETER S PENCE COLLECTION Next weekend, June 24-25, our parish takes up the annual Peter s Pence Collection. United with more than 1 billion Catholics worldwide who participate in this special collection, we have a chance to support the spiritual and charitable works of the Holy Father, Pope Francis. This year s theme is Be a Witness of Charity. See the special insert in today s bulletin for more information. Please contribute generously next weekend using the special envelope found in this month s offering envelope packet. Extra envelopes are attached to today s bulletin insert and will be available in the pews next weekend. You can also donate through the online giving link on our parish website, sacredheart.org. ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL 2017 The 2017 Annual Catholic Appeal campaign is still underway in our parish. Thank you to those parish households who have made a pledge. PARISH GIVING FUND To model stewardship giving on a parish level, Sacred Heart has traditionally given away a portion of its ordinary income (Sunday and holyday offerings) to worthy charities beyond parish boundaries. Fr. Steve has assembled a small committee to make recommendations to him on where this money should be directed.
