3 From the Pastor & Liturgy FROM THE PASTOR PARISH MASTER PLAN I have appointed a committee to look at our Parish Master Plan from a few years ago and see what is the best way to proceed with a Master Plan for our Parish (and School) campus. The committee is currently studying options, and I hope that there will be a decision made by the end of May so that I can communicate with the entire parish the direction we will go. As you can imagine there are several projects that need our attention, and we will have to accomplish them in phases as the Master Plan that was developed a few years ago also suggested. PILGRIMAGE 2018 We are completing the details for our 2018 Pilgrimage: In the Footsteps of Paul the Apostle. The pilgrimage will be April 4-14, 2018; we will visit Greece and Turkey as we visit the places that St. Paul himself visited on his missionary journeys. Our first information meeting about the pilgrimage will be on Sunday, May 21, at 1 PM in the Parish Hall. Look for more details to follow soon. CINCO DE MAYO DINNER Everyone has a chance to support our parish high school parishioners who are going to Tijuana, Mexico, this summer to help build a house for a needy family by attending the Cinco de Mayo dinner on Friday night, May 5. Come and have some tacos and find out who is going; there is still room for more participants. Let us continue to work together to build up the Kingdom of God here at Sacred Heart. EASTER BANNER The Easter Banner that is hanging from the balcony ceiling is made on painted photographic backdrop paper. The banner was designed by Father Steve and was fabricated by parishioners at St. Benedict Parish in Seattle. The banner was originally used for the chapel at the Ocean Shores Convention Center for Priest Days a few years ago. The banner depicts the Risen Christ bending down and giving his heart to the world. He is in the center flanked by two angels. Below the globe representing all the world are images of the Pacific Northwest including Mount Ranier, evergreen trees, the façade of St. James Cathedral, and the Space Needle. At the bottom of the banner is water teeming with all kinds of water vegetation and creatures. The banner also evokes images of the days of creation which we heard in the first reading from the Book of Genesis at the Easter Vigil. Since there are few churches in the archdiocese that have the ability and the space to display the banner, this is the first time it has been used since its original display at Priest Days. SAINTS PHILIP AND JAMES, APOSTLES Wednesday, May 3, is the feastday of Saints Philip and James (first century); we will remember them at the 9 AM Mass on Wednesday. Although few details are known about St. Philip, Scripture portrays him as one who le ads others to Christ. St. Philip introduces his friend Nathaniel to Jesus, and points to Jesus as the source of nourishment in the feeding of the five thousand. He also highlights Jesus as the path to the Father in the Last Supper account. St. James the Lesser not to be confused with St. James the Greater [he is honored on July 25] was gifted with a special appearance of the Risen Christ [see 1 Corinthians 15:7]. Throughout history it was believed that he authored the letter of James, but recent biblical scholarship considers this to be unlikely. Both Sts. Philip and James died as martyrs, shedding their blood for the sake of the Gospel. They are most likely celebrated together because the Basilica of the Twelve Apostles in Rome is dedicated to them Sourcebook for Sundays, Seasons, and Weekdays, ) FIRST COMMUNION This weekend we will celebrate with almost 30 children who will receive Communion for the first time at the 5 PM Vigil Mass or on Sunday morning at 11. Please keep these children, their families, and their catechists in your prayers as these children move forward on their journey to full initiation in the Church. Next Sunday, all of the children who have received Communion for the first time last weekend and this weekend will participate in the 11 AM Mass; they will be recognized during the announcements and there will be cake in observance of their First Communion after the Mass. MAY CROWNING We will celebrate May Crowning next Sunday morning at Mass at 11. Our parishioners who are in pre-k and Kindergarten will carry flowers for Mary in the entrance procession, and we will crown the image of Mary in her shrine in the nave. The pre-k and Kindergarten parishioners will also assist in other roles during the Mass, e.g., greeters, ushers, intercessors, and gift bearers including bringing canned food for Brown Bag Sunday. Our parish school community will celebrate May crowning after the 8:45 Mass on Friday morning. The school community will process to the statue of Mary outside the school to honor Mary with a crown of flowers and flowers at her feet. FIRST FRIDAY MASSES We will celebrate Mass this coming First Friday, May 5, at 6:45 AM and 8:45 AM. Since First Friday Mass is traditionally dedicated to the Sacred Heart, the early First Friday Mass is a great opportunity for parishioners (and visitors) to participate in First Friday Mass before going to work.

Baby Basics Bellevue, a non-profit, all volunteer run organization has been distributing diapers to low-income, working families on the Eastside since The need for diapers is growing, and diaper banks in King County are trying to keep up. First Wednesday movie May 3rd ~ Youth Room 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM Jeff Kress, Pastoral Assistant for Youth and Young Adult Ministry jkress@sacredheart.org Greetings from the school admissions office! We are so excited about all the new families that have joined us during the year! Please know we are currently working with potential new families looking ahead at the school year. We have availability in certain grade levels. Please feel free to contact me if you want to learn more about our amazing parish school and the admissions process. Call me at ext or at sknapp@sacredheart.org. Thank you, Susana Knapp Sacred Heart School Sacred Heart School Honored Sacred Heart School was recently honored at the Treehouse Champions for Foster Kids Luncheon. For the last 15 years, Sacred Heart School students and staff have donated new shoes to Treehouse for children in foster care. The shoe drive is held on the feast day of St. Nicholas (December) and students are asked to bring a pair of shoes, in their size, to donate. Many of the students earn money to pay for the shoes by helping out around the house. Over 400 shoes are collected annually at this mass, often referred to as, the shoe liturgy. At the end of mass all hands are raised to bless the shoes and those that will walk in them. In appreciation of the years of giving, Treehouse presented Sacred Heart School with their 2017 Community Partner Award. We are proud of our school and look forward to continuing the sole-to-soul connection with Treehouse.

6 Administration & Stewardship DISCERNING NEW LEADERS AT SACRED HEART Sacred Heart Parish and School relies on the Christian leadership of many of our members to guide and support our common life together. At present, there are six key leadership groups: Pastoral Council, Finance Council, School Commission, Social Concerns Commission, Stewardship Commission, and Worship Commission. In addition, our Hearts on Fire Pastoral Plan calls for the creation of a Faith Formation Commission starting this fall. Each group has important responsibilities and opportunities to help us live out our Christian mission together. Leaders usually serve a two or three year term and so every year we have faithful stewards who rotate off their leadership position as new members join on. Each spring, we turn to the Holy Spirit and trust that God will send laborers into our fields at Sacred Heart to help us accomplish our many goals. This year, our parishwide leadership discernment process will take place on Thursday evening, May 18th at 7:00 p.m. in the church. If you feel called to explore a leadership role at Sacred Heart next year OR if you would like to nominate someone you feel would be a strong leader, please talk with any parish staff member for more details or contact Carol Guenther at , cguenther@sacredheart.org, for next steps. All those discerning how God is calling them to serve are invited to complete the Gallup Strengths inventory in advance of May 18th and Carol can help you with that step. Please pray that the power and joy of the Risen Christ will inspire and bless all who step forward in service.
