3 From the Pastor & Liturgy FROM THE PASTOR MAKE SOMEONE S DAY MERRY AND BRIGHT During Advent we have had many opportunities to assist others including: Sacred Heart School students bringing a pair of shoes for a foster child, people responding so generously by sharing gifts through the Giving Tree, and people looking out for those who are sick or in the hospital. These are wonderful examples of our parishioners sharing their gifts with others. Now as we celebrate the closing days of Advent, there will be more chances to reach out to make someone s day merry and bright just as Jesus was born to save us from our sins and open the way to our salvation. Let us continue to work together to build up the Kingdom of God here at Sacred Heart. CHRISTMAS MASS SCHEDULE Our Christmas Mass schedule is: Christmas Eve at 4 PM children s choir, prelude begins at 3:45, incense and blessing of the crèche, children s homily. Doors will open at 3:00 PM. Christmas Eve at 7 PM women s ensemble, prelude begins at 6:30, harp. Christmas Eve at 10 PM Sacred Heart Chorale, prelude begins at 9:30, incense and blessing of the Christmas Tree. Christmas Day at 10 AM Sacred Heart Chorale, prelude begins at 9:45. All Christmas Masses will be celebrated at Sacred Heart. Father Steve will preside and preach at the Christmas Eve Masses; Father Charles Barnes, SJ, will preside and preach at the Christmas Day Mass. Many visitors will be joining us next weekend for Christmas Masses -everyone should be a minister of hospitality and help to make our visitors feel welcome. For those who are attending the 4 pm Christmas Eve Mass, there will be parking attendants to direct parking. When the parking lots are full, cars will be directed to park off campus. ADVENT PENANCE ON MONDAY Advent closes this week as we celebrate God s mercy in forgiving our sins. Take a few moments to examine your conscience in order to confess your sins sincerely. Our parish Communal Advent Penitential Service will be Monday, December 19, at 7 PM, with the opportunity for individual confession. We also have confession available on Wednesday morning, December 21, 8:00-8:45 AM, or by calling Father Steve for an appointment. Since this coming Saturday is Christmas Eve there will be no confessions from 3-4:30 PM. FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT December 18 is the Fourth Sunday of Advent. The Gospel for this Sunday tells us about how the birth of Jesus came about. This infancy narrative takes place right after the genealogy account in Matthew. It is one of five stories which tells of Jesus as a young boy. Though his natural genealogy line is broken, it is fulfilled through Joseph, for Mary, his betrothed, accepts the child from the angel. This was an awkward position of faith and trust for Joseph. He must follow the law and tradition while trusting in the Lord, and accepting possible humiliation. (2017 Sourcebook for Sundays, Seasons, and Weekdays, 25) As we spend this final week in anticipation, of once again celebrating the birth of Jesus, let us see how God is inviting us to prepare for Christmas this year. DECORATING FOR CHRISTMAS Christmas decorating is a great opportunity to offer time and talent in our parish. Decorating will take place on Thursday, December 22, 7-9 PM, and on Friday, December 23, 9:45 AM-2 PM. There are all sorts of jobs to do including: decorating the Children s Christmas tree, setting up the crèches, and cleaning the pews. Lunch will be available, and people are welcome to come and help no matter the skill level or age. SIMBANG GABI MASS ON SATURDAY Simbang Gabi is a Filipino Catholic tradition of preparing for Christmas. It includes a novena (Mass is celebrated nine days in a row) of Masses that ends with Christmas. Simbang Gabi which means church in the night. Since Filipinos would go to Mass early before going to work; they would carry parols (star lanterns) to guide their way. These Masses came to be known as Misa de Gallo ( Mass of the Rooster ) because they were celebrated at dawn. The Masses were festive celebrations with Christmas carols sung before the Mass, catechesis, faith sharing, and of course, lots of food afterward. We are celebrating Simbang Gabi at the 5 pm Mass on Saturday, December 17; our parish parol will be carried in the entrance procession and will be blessed at the beginning of Mass; the second reading and the refrain for O Come, O Come, Emmanuel will be done in Tagalog. There will be Filipino food after Mass LITURGICAL CALENDARS 2017 Liturgical Calendars are available in the narthex, side church entrance, and in the Parish Office. Flintofts Funeral Home in Issaquah provided our calendars this year; we are grateful for this generous gift. There are still a few copies of the 2017 St. Joseph Sunday Missals for purchase at $3.00; these are available in the narthex and in the Parish Office.

GRIEF & THE HOLIDAYS Holidays are time spent with loved ones was imprinted on our psyche from a young age. Holidays mark the passage of time in our lives. They are part of the milestones we share with each other and they generally represent time spent with family. They bring meaning to certain days and we bring much meaning back to them. But since holidays are for being with those we love the most, how on earth can anyone be expected to cope with them when a loved one has died? For many people, this is the hardest part of grieving, when we miss our loved ones even more than usual. How can you celebrate togetherness when there is none? When you have lost someone special, your world loses its celebratory qualities. Holidays only magnify the loss. The sadness feels sadder and the loneliness goes deeper. The need for support may be the greatest during the holidays. Pretending you don t hurt and or it is not a harder time of the year is just not the truth for you. You can and will get through the holidays. Rather than avoiding the feelings of grief, lean into them. It is not the grief you want to avoid, it is the pain. Grief is the way out of the pain. There are a number of ways to incorporate your loved one and your loss into the holidays. A prayer before the Holiday dinner, about your loved one. Light a candle for your loved one. Create an online tribute for them. Share a favorite story about your loved one. Have everyone tell a funny story about your loved one. At your place of worship remember them in a prayer. HOSPITAL ADMISSION? If you are admitted to the Hospital and would like to receive Holy Communion or receive the Sacrament of the Sick- PLEASE CALL THE PARISH OFFICE Questions: Mary Dickins

Thank you for returning to the parish, the poor and other charities a part of the many gifts God has bestowed on you. May God bless you in the new year. Year-end Giving, a Planned Gift Successful people are often asked how they thrive. What did they do differently than others? One of the secrets they share is the importance of practicing good stewardship. As stewards of the many gifts God has given us, we can give wisely to support the mission of the Catholic Church in Western Washington. When many people think of charitable giving, especially at year s end, they think of making a cash gift. However, there is another way. It s call a planned gift. There are many ways a planned gift can bring benefits back to you while also benefitting your parish community: A charitable gift annuity that pays you fixed income for life at a rate based on your age; A gift of real estate that offers tax and income advantages; and A gift of stock that helps you avoid capital gains tax. Many of these benefits can be achieved with a surprisingly modest gift. There are variations on each of these gift options. The Archdiocesan Planned Giving Office is pleased to provide information to you and your advisors as you consider making year-end gifts. You may reach the Planned Giving Office at or toll free or via at plannedgiving@seattlearch.org. You are also welcome to visit their website at Annual Catholic Appeal Year-End Payments and Donations Want to make your Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA) payment or donation by year-end for tax purposes? Any payments or new gifts you want credited to the 2016 calendar year for tax purposes need to be in the Annual Catholic Appeal office by December 31 st. The Annual Catholic Appeal, Archdiocese of Seattle, is a taxexempt organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Tax ID # Call if you have any questions.
