3 Liturgy Weekly Reflections Next weeks Readings April 6, th Sunday of Lent Both Martha and Mary express great conviction in Jesus healing power: Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. Their conviction, however, was tied to their human experience of the fragility of sickness and the finality of death. Jesus action surmounts human experience and reveals something entirely new: everyone who lives and believes in [Jesus] will never die. Belief in Jesus unties us from the limits of human experience and frees us for the eternity of risen Life. Our experiences of living can sometimes limit us. For example, when a friend has hurt us, we can become leery of deep relationships. In other words, once bitten, twice shy. But if we never allow Jesus to break open the limits of our human experiences, we can never receive the unexpected gifts of freedom and Life he offers. Jesus said to her. Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God. Discuss what Pope Francis says in Lumen Fidei about that statement: Those who believe, see; they see with a light that illumines their entire journey, for it comes from the risen Christ. It is capable of illuminating every aspect of human existence. And Jesus wept. What does that tell you about Jesus, the one who won the battle over death for us? How would you feel if there were no life after death? In all of these readings we are encouraged to choose life when faced with death. How do you do that in your daily life? Lenten Schedule: March 8~April 12, reconciliation every Friday 6-7pm 6pm Soup Suppers ~ Egan Hall 7pm Stations of the Cross ~ Church Holy Week begins with Palm Sunday, April 13. The Stations of the Cross on Good Friday will be at 2pm. In preparation for the October statewide conference, the Cornerstone Conference Prayer Committee is asking parishes to have one Mass offered each month, for 9 consecutive months. St. John s first mass for these intentions will be March 24 at 8:30am. Rosary will start at 8am. We hope that you will join us throughout these next 9 months to pray for the success of the Conference. The fruits of the conference will be instrumental in building a culture of life in Washington State. The conference will take place October 24/25, Next weeks Readings April 13, 2014 Palm Sunday Year A First Reading Isaiah 50:4-7 The Suffering Servant speaks to the weary. Psalm 22 My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? Second Reading Philippians 26:-11 Jesus emptied himself, and accepted death on a cross. Gospel Matthew 26:14-27:66 The came to a place called Golgotha and crucified Jesus there. Our readings today focus on the great sacrifice that Jesus has made because of his love for us. The proclamation from Isaiah portrays God s servant who hears God s voice and does not turn back. Saint Paul tells us that Jesus sacrifice is what led to his glorification and our salvation. And in the Passion according to Saint Matthew, the Roman centurion proclaims what Peter could not bring himself to say: Truly, this was the Son of God! As we listen today, let us ask for the grace to recognize and acknowledge God s saving action in our own lives. There will be no Adoration this Thursday, April 10. The Rosary will be at 8am and Morning Prayer will be at 8:30am. Catholic Cemeteries We remember and give thanks at our regular Eucharistic celebrations for all of those who have died. 4 Parish Life RCIA : As our Candidates and Catechumens begin their final preparation for receiving the Sacraments at Easter Vigil, please keep the 11 adults and children in your prayers. FOR THE MOST CURRENT UPDATE ON THE IRS TAX FRAUD, please go to the Seattle Archdiocese website: seattlearchdiocese.org/ and click the red box on the home page. We have Children s Worship aids at the doors of the church one for 3-6 yrs old and one for 7-12 yrs old. Did You Know that St. John has a Family Rosary Group? It meets once a month in Quigley House. The next meeting is April 12 after the 5pm Vigil Mass. The Rosary is usually said in front of Our Lady s Shrine in the courtyard by the school. If weather does not allow it the Rosary is said in the Chapel room in Quigley House, followed by a potluck dinner in Quigley 13. Everything is done by 8pm. Father Crispin has joined them for the rosary on many occasions. We would love for our group to grow. OSO Mudslide and Disaster Relief You can make donations to assist with the Oso mudslide relief effort. Catholic Community Services of Western Washington is accepting donations. Those who would like to donate should visit Donations will be forwarded by CCS to Father Tim Sauer, Pastor of St. John Vianney Parish, Darrington and Immaculate Conception Parish, Arlington. These parishes will be providing direct assistance to people in Oso and the surrounding communities. Responsibilities of this position include and are not limited to: answering telephone, greeting visitors and resolving parishioner/visitor requests; preparing and publishing weekly bulletin including content creation of standard portions; maintaining Sacramental records and parish database system; providing administrative support for other staff members; managing parish calendar; coordinating volunteers as needed for parish administrative projects; developing quarterly liturgical minister schedules; distributing mail; and maintaining office supply inventory. Candidate should be proficient in Microsoft Publisher, Excel and Word; working knowledge of PDS is a plus. Salary commensurate with experience and Archdiocesan guidelines. Excellent benefits. Stewardship A Disciples Response When Jesus heard about the illness of His friend, Lazarus, He responded, This illness is not to end in death; rather it is for God s glory, that through it the Son of God may be glorified. Every aspect of our lives our gifts as well as our sufferings can, if surrendered to Christ, lead to blessing for others and ourselves. Electronic St John s is easy! Psalm 145 St. Catherine of Siena Feast day ~ April She was the 23rd child of Jacopo and Lapa Benincasa and grew up as an intelligent, cheerful and intensely religious person. Catherine disappointed her mother by cutting off her hair as a protest against being overly encouraged to improve her appearance in order to attract a husband. Her father ordered her to be left in peace, and she was given a room of her own for prayer and meditation. She entered the Dominican Third Order at 18 and spent the next three years in seclusion, prayer and austerity. Gradually a group of followers gathered around her men and women, priests and religious. An active public apostolate grew out of her contemplative life. Her letters, mostly for spiritual instruction and encouragement of her followers, began to take more and more note of public affairs. Opposition and slander resulted from her mixing fearlessly with the world and speaking with the candor and authority of one completely committed to Christ. She was cleared of all charges at the Dominican General Chapter of Her public influence reached great heights because of her evident holiness, her membership in the Dominican Third Order, and the deep impression she made on the pope. She worked tirelessly for the crusade against the Turks and for peace between Florence and the pope. In 1378, the Great Schism began, splitting the allegiance of Christendom between two, then three, popes and putting even saints on opposing sides. Catherine spent the last two years of her life in Rome, in prayer and pleading on behalf of the cause of Urban VI and the unity of the Church. She offered herself as a victim for the Church in its agony. She died surrounded by her "children" and was canonized in Catherine ranks high among the mystics and spiritual writers of the Church. In 1939, she and Francis of Assisi were declared co-patrons of Italy. Paul VI named her and Teresa of Avila doctors of the Church in Her spiritual testament is found in The Dialogue.
