2 ST. GERTRUDE PARISH Treasures from Our Tradition The disciples gathered on the fiftieth day after the Resurrection were not keeping their first Pentecost. For them, Pentecost was the fiftieth day after Passover, a feast of the first fruits of the harvest. It was the second most important feast of the year. Today, Jews gather on the eve of the feast to study scripture and the law, and after the feast begins at sundown, spend the day in joyful social gatherings. The meaning of the celebration is the giving of the law on Mount Sinai, so for Christians the connection to the gifts of the Holy Spirit is obvious. In Sicily and in the Pantheon in Rome, today the descent of the Holy Spirit is enacted with a stunning ritual. Some churches there have an "eye" in the roof open to the sky, called an oculus. After the Gospel today, thousands of rose petals fall from the oculus onto the assembly. Churches and homes are decked in greenery and flowers to express the new life the Holy Spirit brings on this, the "birthday of the church." This radio station will provide people with quality, faith-filled programming to encourage spiritual growth and evangelization. Programming will include recitation of the Rosary, praying the Liturgy of the Hours, Mass, catechetical programs, and Catholic news. Parishes, schools, diocesan offices, universities, and even family homes will be involved in the preparation and broadcasting, making the radio a virtual meeting place where many people will share their faith and life experiences. It is through your generosity that this project, and others like it, can spread the Gospel around the world. Remember that half of all the proceeds from this collection stay here in the Diocese of Greensburg to support our local communications efforts, including The Catholic Accent newspaper, diocesan website and other social media platforms. Information sessions Information sessions for men who are considering the permanent diaconate will be held 6:30-9 p.m. on: May 16 at St. Margaret Mary Parish, Lower Burrell; May 23 at Blessed Sacrament Cathedral Parish, Greensburg; and May 30 at St. Rita Parish, Connellsville. You only need to attend one session. Deacon William J. Hisker, director of the program, will lead each session. Call to register or for more information. Today s Readings First Reading -- Filled with the Holy Spirit, the apostles begin to speak in tongues (Acts 2:1-11). Psalm -- Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth (Psalm 104). Second Reading -- There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:3b-7, 12-13) or Galatians 5: Gospel -- As the Father has sent me, so I send you. Receive the Holy Spirit (John 20:19-23) or John 15:26-27; 16:12-15.

Parents are asked to attend this session with their 7 th grader(s). Diocese of Greensburg The Diocese of Greensburg has learned of a Caller ID Spoofing scam in at least one of our parishes. People have reported to the parish that they have received a call that shows on their Caller ID as being from the parish. In this particular spoofing, the caller claims to be selling something on behalf of the parish. A parish does not give its telephone resources and parishioners phone numbers to an outside sales organization. If you suspect you are the recipient of a spoofing call, inform the parish then contact your telephone service provider for information on how to prevent the scam. Most important, never give personal information over the phone to someone you don t know especially your Social Security number, bank account number or credit card number. Spoofing is one method used to get that personal information for fraudulent use. Theology On Tap Calling ALL young adults (single, married, parents, etc.)! Join us for Theology on Tap in the A-K Valley on Thursday, May 24, at 7:00 p.m. at Garda s Restaurant (2033 State Route 66, Ford City, PA 16226). The topic of the evening is Journey to the Heart of Christ: Reconciliation and the Eucharist presented by Chris Baker. Food will be provided, no charge! Babies in carriers are welcome at all A-K TOT events. Theology on Tap is a program for Catholic Young Adults and their friends to meet together at local bars, cafes, and restaurants to listen to a speaker, share conversation, and gain new insights into the faith.
