Sunday, June 17th, 2018 Dear Parishioners, With the power going out at the end of the Saturday evening Mass last weekend and then only half of the electrical working on Sunday morning, it sure provided us with an interesting experience at Mass! I am grateful to the MidAmerican crew who fixed our power issue on Sunday afternoon. Even though we were only without electricity for a few hours, it sure made me more grateful for the gift of electricity! Many people experienced more loss than we did. Many have reached out to those who needed assistance with trees down and water in basements, may we still keep in our prayers those who are still dealing with the aftermath of those storms. Congratulations to all Fathers: As we observe Father s Day, we stop to think of the contributions our fathers have made to enrich our lives. May we pray that all Fathers look to the example of St. Joseph to be a strong, courageous, and faithful father! Our Fall Festival is planned for Sunday, Sept. 16, 2018, beginning with Mass at Gilbert s Sale Yard. Please mark this date in your calendar and plan to attend. Also consider if there is some sort of craft or skill that you can share with us by donating a homemade item for our country store, or the silent or live auction. I will be gone for a good portion of the week as I attend the annual Archdiocesan Priests Convocation. Our speaker will be Paul Ruff, who is the Assistant Director of Human Formation at The Saint Paul Seminary School of Divinity. His presentations will be centered on the theme Whole Hearted Living in the Diocesan Priesthood. June 30th marks the end of our fiscal year. Generally speaking, the financial health of parish is ok. We are a parish who lives Sunday Collection to Sunday Collection. Our Pastoral and Finance Councils and School Board work to be good stewards of the resources we are provided and they continue to find ways to be better stewards of our temporal resources. That being said, this last quarter of the fiscal year we are experiencing a considerable dip in revenue. This has created a need for us to dip into our savings to be able to pay our bills. Thus, if each family could consider a summer gift to our parish, I would be grateful. I will also personally give an additional gift to our parish. Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, pray for us! 3 GOSPEL MEDITATION ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE June 17, th Sunday in Ordinary Time "This is how it is with the kingdom of God." What is a kingdom? Is it the brick and mortar that build up the castle? Is it the expanse of land a king can reasonably defend? Our notions of kingdoms may be romanticized in the modern era, but for the Israelites, a kingdom held deep historical meaning. Thousands of years before the birth of Christ, the Israelites had asked God for a king. After the reigns of David and Solomon, the united kingdom dissolved into factions, and the land was conquered by the Assyrians, Babylonians, and, finally, Romans. For the Israelites, a kingdom was something to build, both structurally and civilly. While this had ended in ruin for their ancestors, many of Jesus' contemporaries longed for the restoration of an earthly kingdom. Jesus' words in today's Gospel are a radical departure from this perspective. He compares the Kingdom of God to a field, but it appears that the farmer has little to do with its progress. "The seed would sprout and grow, he knows not how. Of its own accord, the land yields fruit." Jesus introduces his followers to a new sort of kingdom, a kingdom where God provides the growth. There is work to be done, of course. "When the grain is ripe, he wields the sickle at once, for the harvest has come." But for the Kingdom of God to flourish, there are certain things that are outside of our control. We sow seeds of kindness, justice, and integrity and then we must be patient. As shoots of faith appear, we nurture the growth with encouragement. As Christians, our task is not to build the Kingdom of God under our power alone, but to trust in the life-giving movement of God. 4 Everyday Stewardship You could buy a meal for a person who is hungry or for a person who just ate a feast. You could spend time with a lonely person or with someone who has more friends than you. You could step forward to join a parish committee that your experience and knowledge can help, or you can join a ministry where you will constantly struggle to figure out what to do. All of the above actions involve you giving and sharing yourself and your gifts. But not all of these actions will bear good fruit. If a sower sows seeds only on rocky or weed-infested soil, nothing of great value will grow. But if that same sower plants his seeds in rich soil, then the harvest will one day be great. In all of the soils, the seed is being sown, but it is not the act of sowing that is the most important factor. In living a stewardship way of life, we must discern how best to share our gifts. Discernment needs the Holy Spirit and a desire to follow God's will, not our own. Our own desires and misconceptions can cause us to use our gifts unwisely. The more mindful we are of how, when, and why we are sharing ourselves, then the greater the impact for God's glory. God wants all of you, but not in a way that is without understanding and discernment. He wants you to shine as a light to the world through your stewardship just as He came to you as the Light of the World in baptism. You can't shine brightly if the match does not hit the wick. -Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS Immaculate Conception Catholic Church 4 OUTREACH COLLECTION for June 2018.will be taken up next weekend, June 23rd/24th, at all the Masses. St. Mary s Church in Red Lake, MN, burned down 6 months ago, and hopes are to build a church that reflects both the faith and the tradition of the Ojibwe tribe. Fr. Jerry Rogers requested funds a few years ago in the annual Mission Appeal; since then we have hosted fall clothing drives every two years to assist the parish. MEALS ON WHEELS I.C. Thank you! Happy Anniversary! Congratulations to Bill & Mary Downing who will be celebrating their 50th Wedding Anniversary on June 22nd! They were married at St. Joe s in New Hampton, IA. They have 4 daughters and 8 grandchildren (and 1 deceased). The family is having a celebration for Bill & Mary on Saturday, June 23rd, at the Columbus Club at 6:00 p.m. All are invited! 5 CATHOLIC HEART WORK CAMP REQUESTS On June 23rd, our Catholic Heart Work Camp crew will be leaving for Memphis, TN. Our team would appreciate your willingness to help defer costs by donating snacks for the trip, to eat throughout the week and for our trip home. Additionally each camper is to supply work items for their work site.
