2 SAINT MAURICE CHURCH PAGE 2 To speak of many things... This weekend on Sunday we celebrate Father s Day. It s a special day that allows us an opportunity to thank our fathers for the gift of life they have given us and ask God s blessings upon them as they guide us through our lives. In the anticipation of being a father for some of our parishioners, may God continue to bless you and your families as you await the birth of your child. On this Father s Day let us also remember the dads who are away from us or have gone on to their heavenly reward. Their memories allow us those special moments of grace and thanksgiving for their lives and models of faith for many. The month of June presents itself with an opportunity to text to give to the Annual Catholic Appeal. This easy way of making a pledge is being made possible in the hope that more people will participate in the Appeal. Make your gift today, text Sharing to If you have not yet made a pledge, I ask you to prayerfully consider making your pledge before the end of June to help in reaching our goal this year. We are almost at goal!!! Only 5 percent to go!!! On behalf of all who benefit from your generosity through the Annual Catholic Appeal, I thank you. God s choicest Blessings, Fr. Fred STRENGTH OF A MOUNTAIN God took the strength of a mountain, The majesty of a tree, The warmth of a summer sun, The calm of a quiet sea, The generous soul of nature, The comforting arm of night, The wisdom of the ages, The power of the eagle's flight, The joy of a morning in spring, The faith of a mustard seed, The patience of eternity, The depth of a family need, Then God combined these qualities, When there was nothing more to add, He knew His masterpiece was complete, And so, He called it... Dad Christopher Anderson, Elena Cates, Ray Duda, Lenore Mandi, Frank Colandro, Susan Jacobsen, Bart Heefner, Warren Denny, Toni Coe, Gary Livia, Taylor Bova, Gerry Fraioli, Betty Vitti, Rosemary Bella, Sonya Correntee, Mary Caruso, Antonio Ferrajina, Patrick Battinelli, Julie Salce, Lois Scatton, Carol Kane, Kristee Brooks, R. Is it the expanse of land a king can reasonably defend? Our notions of kingdoms may be romanticized in the modern era, but for the Israelites, a kingdom held deep historical meaning. Thousands of years before the birth of Christ, the Israelites had asked God for a king. After the reigns of David and Solomon, the united kingdom dissolved into factions, and the land was conquered by the Assyrians, Babylonians, and, finally, Romans. For the Israelites, a kingdom was something to build, both structurally and civilly. While this had ended in ruin for their ancestors, many of Jesus' contemporaries longed for the restoration of an earthly kingdom. Jesus' words in today's Gospel are a radical departure from this perspective. He compares the Kingdom of God to a field, but it appears that the farmer has little to do with its progress. "The seed would sprout and grow, he knows not how. Of its own accord, the land yields fruit." Jesus introduces his followers to a new sort of kingdom, a kingdom where God provides the growth. There is work to be done, of course. "When the grain is ripe, he wields the sickle at once, for the harvest has come." But for the Kingdom of God to flourish, there are certain things that are outside of our control. We sow seeds of kindness, justice, and integrity and then we must be patient. As shoots of faith appear, we nurture the growth with encouragement. As Christians, our task is not to build the Kingdom of God under our power alone, but to trust in the life-giving movement of God. MINISTERS - WEEKEND OF JUNE 24, 2018 NATIVITY OF JOHN THE BAPTIST 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal MASS 4:00PM SAT 8:00am SUN 10:30am SUN LECTOR Z. Shoztic C. Happel S. The parish alone cannot support all these programs effectively but together, when you give a gift to the Annual Catholic Appeal, we continue the Gospel message and make a difference in the lives of those around us. Make your gift today, text Sharing to Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!! We are at 95% toward goal!!! The 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal is currently underway throughout the Diocese of Bridgeport. Our Appeal goal is $60,000. To date, we have raised 178 gifts in the amount of $56, bringing us to 95 percent of our Parish goal. To all who have made their pledge, I thank you! We are hoping for increased participation. Remember no gift is too small or insignificant. On behalf of all who benefit from your generosity in the Appeal benefits, I thank you. Who can t afford twenty-five cents a day??? Less than 5% to go!!!

4 FAITH FORMATION PAGE 4 Family Scripture Reflection (from Sadlier) Second Reading 2 Corinthians 5:6-10 Saint Paul continues to encourage the community at Corinth. In this chapter, Paul reminds the people of their destiny: eternity with God in Heaven. While he emphasizes the appeal of this eternal happiness, Paul quickly declares that it is about pleasing the Lord "whether we are at home or away." It is good to remember that our true home is Heaven. Yet, like Paul, we must also realize that this life is where we are and where we can please the Lord with our faithfulness and our compassion and service to others. Question to Ponder: Paul writes that "we walk by faith, not by sight." When have you walked by faith and not by sight? Faith Formation Office Vacation! The Faith Formation Office will be closed Sunday, June for vacation. YAY!!! VIRTUS Safe Environments Audit 2018 The Safe Environment audit approaches quickly. Saint Maurice Parish is seeking to ensure that all volunteers are in total compliance with background checks and VIRTUS training. In-person awareness sessions will be held at Saint Maurice on: Saturday, July 7 at 9:30 a.m. in Doran Hall Saturday, August 18 at 1 p.m. in Doran Hall Register online at virtus.org or contact Sandra Kluun, skluun@smcglenbrook.org or ext Additional training sessions are available on various dates and times throughout the diocese. To find a current listing go to: virtus.org and check on Session Listing. The Safe Environment Initiative is intended to make people more aware of the warning signs of child sexual abuse and how to prevent it. The trainings also provide the correct methods to report suspected abuse both in the State of Connecticut and the Diocese of Bridgeport. Meet Saint Barnabas Barnabas was mentioned in the Acts of Apostles for selling his estate and laying the money from the sale at the feet of the Apostles as an example of Christian calling. He had a strong influence on the other Apostles and was active in the early councils and missionary activity of the Church. Barnabas took in Saint Paul when others were suspicious of his conversion. He traveled with Paul on Paul s first missionary journey to Mediterranean ports. They gained many converts to Christianity. He was stoned to death at Salamis in Cyprus about the year 60 AD. We celebrate this saint s life with a memorial on June 11. Faith Formation Billing We request that payment of the Faith Formation fees be made as soon as possible, in order to process payments before the end of the current fiscal year. Please contact Sandra Kluun if you have questions or concerns. LIVE THE LITURGY - INSIPRATION FOR THE WEEK Jesus compares the Kingdom of God to a mustard seed, the tiniest of seeds. When planted, the tiny mustard seed grows into a tremendous tree with large branches. So, too, in each of our lives, small things can have profound effects. God can use one of our more insignificant gestures to radically change another person's life. It may be the kindness of a smile, our willingness to accommodate someone, listening to someone's story, helping someone who is hurting, standing up for someone who is right, or complimenting someone on something they did. We all have God-given gifts and talents. Our task is to use them creatively, consistently, lovingly, and generously. We trust that God will take care of the rest. A PRAYER FOR FATHERS Heavenly Father, you entrusted your Son Jesus, the child of Mary, to the care of Joseph, an earthly father. Bless all fathers as they care for their families. Give them strength and wisdom, tenderness and patience; support them in the work they have to do, protecting those who look to them, as we look to you for love and salvation, through Jesus Christ our rock and defender. Amen.
