PROMISES Today's liturgy is full of promises. The reading from Genesis promises a final triumph over the power of sin and a return to a new creation. The reading from Second Corinthians promises that all who follow Christ will have to struggle. It also promises, however, that we can persevere if we but recognize that Christ is within us, renewing us daily, and giving us the courage and the strength we need to endure. The Gospel promises that doing God's will makes us "family" with Jesus, who forgives all sin and triumphs over evil. Today might be a good day for us to make some promises as well. We can promise to stop kidding ourselves about our own tendencies to selfishness and sin. We can promise ourselves to believe--really believe--that while we are not sinless, we are forgiven. 4 2018 ANNUAL BISHOP S APPEAL UPDATE Thank you for supporting the Bishop's Annual Appeal in the past and in this 2018 Campaign! Our goals for this year are: IHM $37824 and Holy Rosary $ So far our results are: IHM $21195, 56.04% and Holy Rosary $7835, 37.29%. Daughters of Mary IHM & Holy Rosary The Daughters of Mary women s group is changing a bit. It has been decided that we will be a group for Catholic women to share spiritual and social fellowship. We no longer have dues or any formal meetings. We had a little over $1000 in our treasury and the current members met to decide what to do with this money. We have kept a very small amount to help defray any costs associated with Advent by Candlelight. The rest was distributed as follows; $200 to Knights of Columbus Rosary Council; $100 to Birthright; $100 to Steps to End Domestic Violence (formerly Women Helping Battered Women); $100 to the Sisters of Mercy; and $100 to the Carmelite Nuns. The remainder is for service awards to graduation seniors. Our next gathering in Monday, June 25 at 6:30 at IHM. The previous weekend is the Nativity of John the Baptist so we will be discussing him. All women are welcome and no preparation is necessary. Williston and Richmond Seniors Celebration - June 28 All Williston and Richmond Seniors, age 55 and above, are invited to a lasagna meal, catered by Bove's, on June 28 at IHM. There are two seatings, noon and 5:00 PM. Entertainment, door prizes, and other surprises! The meals are compliments of IHM as a thank you to our Seniors. Reservations are required by signing up at IHM or OLHR, by phone at or at pamk@together.net. We encourage you to consider reserving the noon seating, as the 5:00 seating fills quickly. HEALING SERVICE Father Harlow would like everyone to know that the healing service on July 1 is cancelled. The BBQ begins at 6:00 PM sharp. Hamburgers, hot dogs, salads, and pot luck desserts are on the menu. This BBQ is open to all senior members of both Immaculate Heart of Mary and Our Lady of the Holy Rosary. We have the best BBQ chefs in Vermont, so please come to our BBQ and enjoy fellowship with the Richmond Hale and Hearty Club. Rain or shine! Worldwide Marriage Encounter Allow God to give you grace in abundance and transform your marriage relationship by attending a Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekend. Mass times are Saturday at 7:00 PM, Sunday at 9:00 AM and 10:30 AM, weekdays at 11:15 AM. Bishop Coyne will celebrate a special Mass for families on July 8 at 12:15 PM, followed by a BBQ on the Shrine grounds. This is a beautiful outdoor Mass for families. If you have never been to the Shrine, this Mass is a perfect opportunity to bring your family (and your swimsuits!). The Summer Reflection Series will be held on Wednesdays in July and August. It is not simply a "big church," as some say; some parish churches are larger. What makes a cathedral is the presence of the chair, called a cathedra (Latin for seat) reserved for the bishop. There are many instances in our country of a local church (diocese) outgrowing a cathedral. In Baltimore and St. Louis, the former cathedrals are historic treasures in the heart of the old city, but new and larger structures now function as the seat of the bishop. When a bishop dies or retires, it is said that "the seat is vacant," and when the new bishop is installed, the central ritual is the moment when the decree of the Holy Father is read and the new bishop is escorted to the cathedra. No one but the bishop sits in the cathedra during a ritual, but in Los Angeles the cathedra in the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels is accessible, and no one seems to mind when a visitor tries the cathedra out for the bishop's point of view. --Rev.
