Those who are facing surgeries or very serious health issues can see the priest after the Mass. The Anointing will take place near the Statue of Mary at the front left of the Church. The oils are reserved in the Olea Sancta Repository (Holy Oils) near the Baptismal Font. Family and friends are most welcome to be present together during the Anointing. ADORATION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT Every Friday, there is Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament from 8:30am-12:00pm (between the two daily Masses). Please plan on coming to pray. Be sure to pray for Peace in the Holy Land with the Peace Dove that is lit on the side altar. Prayer cards with the history of the origins of the Dove and suggested prayers are in the basket by the Dove. Also, If you could sign up for an hour a week, or once a month, that would be great. Please contact the main office or see the sign up sheet at the Church entrance. We need at least two people for each hour. This is a real blessing for the mission of the Parish, the Harvard Catholic Center and the Choir School. RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS (RCIA) The parish is always ready to receive adults into the process of preparation for baptism or reception into Full Communion with the Roman Catholic Church. Please call (617) for information. PARISH FOOD PANTRY Non-perishable food is received before every Mass for the pantry, which is open Saturdays from 11:00am-11:30am, or may be left in the parish office. CHURCH ACCESS FOR THE DISABLED Take elevator from the Parish Center Lobby at 29 Mount Auburn Street. Restrooms, handicapped accessible, are located on 1 st & 2 nd floors of the Parish Center. PARKING FOR MASS ON SATURDAY & SUNDAY Free parking at the Cowperthwaite Garage is available by permit only for those attending Mass on weekends only. 3 Dear Friends, Thanks to the Knights of Columbus for their much appreciated Pancake Breakfast last week. We look forward to further culinary excursions! Also, the official opening and blessing of the Reading Room was a happy event. Just a quick note: though we are happy to have the Reading Room up and running, we will NOT be accepting drop off books, as our space is limited. The plan for now is that people can me the title and condition of any books that they might like to donate, which I will review with a small committee. Also, from time to time I will be publishing titles that I am looking for to grow the collection, and people would be invited to purchase those or give extra copies they may own. Come by and see this lovely place! We are grateful to parishioners Mimsie and Angela for their great work in organizing the Bake-A-Thon. We hope that you can participate this weekend as both a fun community event and also as a fund raiser for one of our parish groups (TBD.) Join us in DiGiovanni Hall this weekend! On a more somber but very important note, the Masses this weekend have been designated by Cardinal Seán as a time for Penance and Prayer for those hurt by clergy sexual abuse. Many parishes have done this throughout the years in different ways, but now we will pray with one voice. It is never easy to raise painful things, but in the light of our faith, we know that the cross shows its full reality in the face of God s light. Our prayers, music and homilies at the Masses will speak of our need to ask God for mercy and healing. FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME PRAYER AND PENANCE All Masses on Sunday, February 4 will be offered for Prayer and Penance at the request of Cardinal Seán. Mass is being held in response to a call from Pope Francis for all Episcopal conferences across the world to have a Day or Prayer and Penance in recognition of harm done by clergy sexual abuse within the church. It will be an opportunity to seek repentance for the sins of the church, to pray for all those who were abused, and to pray for continued healing for all impacted by the abuse including those who were abused, families members, members of our church, and the community at large. So you can make appropriate decisions, the topic of the clergy sexual abuse crisis will be addressed during Mass. If you know of anyone who has stepped away from the church because of the clergy abuse crisis, let them know about this Mass in case they would like to attend. If you know of anyone who has been sexually abused by a clergy member or a member of the church, please let them know that the Office of Pastoral Support and Outreach is there to help at (617) UPCOMING PRAYER OPPORTUNITIES Each Friday morning Eucharistic Adoration 8:30am-Noon First Saturday each month Anointing of the Sick after the 9:00am Mass Wednesday, February 14 Ash Wednesday You ll notice a new set of Vigil Candles by the statue of Our Lady next to the Chancel Organ (to the right of the sanctuary). Many folks have suggested we do this, among our regular parishioners and many visitors. The project moved much more quickly than we expected, but we are glad for a good start. We still have some work to do in that area to make it more aesthetically attractive, and plans are in the works. Be sure to visit this new opportunity for prayer in our beautiful church. THE APPLE PIE BAKE-A-THON: BUY A PIE! The Apple Pie Bake-a-thon Pie Sale is this weekend. Buy a pie for your Super Bowl party. Pies are $20.00 each (cash or check). If consuming a pie breaks a New Year's resolution or personal resolve, please consider purchasing and donating a pie to the Community Lenten Meal program. Apple Pie proceeds support our parish ministries. Two items for your calendar with Lent on the horizon: Fr. Mark will give a talk preparing for the season on Sunday, February 11 at 3:00pm and on Saturday, February 17 from 11:00am-12:00pm we will have a short but inspiring time for Lenten Prayer that is meant for people of all ages and groups in the parish. More to come. Ash Wednesday is February 14. I know our community comes from many places around the country and the world, but what the heck: Go Pats!! God bless, Fr. Kelly Because of the wide spread flu, we will once again introduce these temporary measures: At the Sign of Peace, people are asked to offer a nod or wave or smile but to refrain from shaking hands. We would ask that everyone receive the Body of Christ by hand and not on the tongue, though the option remains. We will be suspending the receiving of the Precious Blood from the Communion Chalices. If you would like a copy of your last year giving's, contact Nancy in the parish office (617) ext EASTER CANDLE If you are interested in donating this year s Easter Candle, contact Nancy in the Parish Office at (617) The Paschal Candle, blessed and lit for the first time at the Easter Vigil Service, is a symbol of Christ the Light, and of His victory over darkness and sin. The Paschal candle is lit at every Mass during the Easter Season and at every Baptism and Funeral throughout the year. FOOD PANTRY The food pantry has been blessed with generous donations over the past few weeks. In addition to a few wonderful parishioners who routinely donate requested items, the Martin Luther King Day of Service event provided several bags of non-perishable items to each of the food pantries in Cambridge. In addition, Hope and Comfort donated bars of soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, as well as body wash and deodorant. Hope and Comfort provides toiletries to food pantries in the Boston area to address a largely unmet need as personal care items cannot be purchased with SNAP benefits. Donations of laundry detergent and dish soap would be very helpful as we are now getting requests for detergent every week. In fact, some of these requests are from guests who do not speak English but instead use charades to convey their request in a universal language. PARISH SUPPORT AND FINANCES Our offertory this weekend, February 3/4 has one collection, our regular parish offertory. Prior Offertory: Jan. 27/28 $5, FYTD Total: $229, IT IS CORI RENEWAL TIME... Per the Archdiocese of Boston, as part of serving in ANY ministry at St. Paul s, or any parish in the Archdiocese, Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) checks are obtained for all volunteers who minister to or have the potential for unmonitored access to children, youth, elderly or the disabled. CORI checks with a valid ID will take place before you start practicing your ministry. Nancy will be available in the Parish Office from 8:30am to 12:00pm on Sunday, February 11 so you can fill out your CORI form. You may also fill out your form at the Parish Office during the week (just give a call, (617) to find out available times). Thank You For Your Continued Support On This Very Important Matter. CARING FOR THE SOUL Caring for the Soul meets on the first Monday of the month at 5:30pm in Mary s Room (Room 202). Caring for the Soul supports those whose lives have been affected by mental illness, and is working to make our religious communities places of compassion, healing and acceptance. All are welcome. Group leader is Dr. Nancy Kehoe, RSCI. CENTERING PRAYER The Centering prayer group meets on Thursdays from 6:30pm-8:00pm in Mary s Room (Room 202). Our meetings include lectio divina or readings from Fr. Keating or the Christian mystics, followed by a period of centering prayer. We are currently reading Dark Night of the Soul by Gerald May. PASTORAL CARE St. Paul s ministry to those who are sick and homebound has grown into a vibrant part of our parish community. There are three ways your help is needed. Mark Murphy, at harvardpriest@gmail.com or at (617) , ext ~~~ GOSPEL MEDITATION February 4, th Sunday in Ordinary Time For most of us, the dynamic between prayer and action is imperfect. Breakfast needs to be made and the kids dressed. Work demands our energy and additional responsibilities fill our evenings and weekends. Then there's the football game or a new TV series to stream. After all, don't we need to relax? We're all busy. But just imagine Jesus' situation in today's Gospel. He heals Peter's mother-in-law, drives out demons, and cures diseases late into the night. With very little sleep, he arises before dawn to capture some peace and quiet, only to find "those who were with him pursued him." How often do we feel pursued by the harried commitments, even when we try to seek rest? Perhaps we can learn something from the response of Jesus. Jesus models two key things: the essential nature of prayer and the essential call of vocation. "He went off to a deserted place, where he prayed." Despite inevitable exhaustion, Jesus prioritizes time with the Father. We might not have easy access to deserts and mountaintops, but today's Gospel challenges us to take intentional time set apart for God. We can designate a "prayer chair" in a corner of our home or leave a little earlier to pick our children up from school so we can snatch time in a nearby chapel. We can pray the rosary on our commute or take the dog for a long walk in silence. However, when the Apostles arrive, Jesus doesn't linger overlong in the deserted place or make an excuse for why he can't return with his friends. Jesus is true to his calling. He continues on in his state of life, serving the people nearest to him. Like Jesus, we are invited to set intentional time for communion with God so that we can be refreshed and empowered for our communion with others.
